When you are shooting landscape, wildlife, birds, portraits, and also doing multicamera videography, the amount of gear you need to pack can get heavy fast! Here is my packing strategy for Iceland bird migration. I have to say, after making this, my plans have changed sadly and I will not be going to Prague to film the course, for family reasons. So the amount of gear i need to take finally is less.

That's a huge load to carry😮. Wish you all the best Matt❤
You got great camera gears, nice camera bag and nice packing. Great video!
Well done, my guy! And I'm lovig your hat game as well -- very nice!
Thanks mate! Good to hear from you
Thank you!
Matt Granger…professional packer and traveler.
Oh yeah, he also does a bit of photography. 😂
Heck - hope all is OK, no/minimal damage
Interesting video, thanks !
Thanks Matt. Great video. Very helpful. I leave for Alaska end of month. I will be packing similar to your style less a Hassie!🤣 Best of luck and safe journey friend. Jim
One of the challenges seems to be finding cases/bags which are deep enough for the 'pro camera' like the Z9 or a D850 with the vertical grip. Think Tank is my favorite brand of soft cases, and their Stash Master Pro camera cubes are deep enough for these cameras. I carry a lot less than Matt, so one or two of these can go inside carry-on luggage. It starts in the carry-on, but if that needs to be gate checked, I can pull it out and switch it to the personal item. ['Avoid the Fail' tip: also have basic toiletries and a change of clothes in the personal item. Speaking for a friend... :-D ]
Trying not to sweat waiting for check-in with 13kg in my Billingham shoulder bag back in the 80s is an experience that I will never forget! Modern gear is so much lighter. Quite a bit of that was film...
Cool
hi Matt, you are known for always taking a lot with you on your trips. It was interesting to see what you take with you now and how you pack it. I generally find it a problem to take photography equipment with me when traveling in economy class. You quickly reach the permitted weight for hand luggage. The way you explained it, I'm sure you won't have any problems. But it would be best if you fly in business class, because you are generally allowed to take two larger pieces of hand luggage and one personal item with you. By the way, I personally recommend Tumi bags, which have extremely good material and are very, very durable and also offer extremely good service even after years.
My back aches just looking at this
I'm laughing because I hesitate to bring one dslr body, my 70-200, 50, and 18-35 on flights because it's too much. I end up taking my phone and my Nikon Coolpix 😃
Great stuff, that's really well packed! Does that companion backpack have enough weather sealing on its own or do you bring a raincover for the sudden storms (or waterfalls) in Iceland?
It’s good in the rain, but if it’s crazy wet, I’ll throw a poncho over it.
The future is mirrorless: they are smaller and lighter 🤭
I love mirrorless but I still adore my DSLRs.
Said who?
Crazy!
I’ll never feel guilty about my one camera body, 4 lenses, bag of 120 film and filter pouch again😂.

After making this, my plans have changed sadly and I will not be going to Prague to film the course, for family reasons. So the amount of gear i need to take finally is less. Will still have 2 tripods, 1 monopod, 3 cameras and... lets just say, a few lenses :)
Hope I wont have problems when I migrate to Barcelona in a couple of months with my carry on full of diecast cars jajajaa And the backpack also some mixed with 2 cameras and 3 or 4 lenses
so are you leaving the spare gear in the hotel room while you are out?
What are the tips for the large battery chargers found on the nikon z9 and D6 series bodies? I am debating about putting them into my checked luggage for an up and coming trip
The Z9 battery charger is much smaller, only charging a single EN-EL18, and it uses a USB-C cable. It fits in a pocket.
Chargers - check in. Batteries - carry on
Man that's a lot of gear. I think it's harder to whittle down your kit to just a few lenses and one plus maybe a spare body than to haul 100 lbs though.
I fear that airlines are getting stingier. On my last international flight from Cyprus on Qatar airways, they insisted on weighing everything, laptop bag, my camera backpack etc. Sigh, first time in more than 100 flights taken that this has happened.
Wow!
Wow. Just wow. with one body and one lens, I don't have to think like that (thank goodness). I'll be going up to a maximum of three lenses and maybe a tripod. Loved the f##k at the end! A framed picture of my Dad did a sympathetic dive at the same time, spooky
Hope you’re fathers picture is ok 👍🏼
@@mattgranger It was the one we had on his coffin last week. He's looking over my shoulder as I work through the estate finances. He wasn't a great photographer, maybe he was just gobsmacked at all the gear?!
Is the field tool kit still available? I wanted to give them as Xmas presents but could not find them.
Yes we have, please email me
@@mattgranger Your I Am Not a Robot reCAPTCHA goes into a loop endless/endless loop.
How about customs, declare anything, pay duties??
No need to pay duties on your own gear as a tourist
Is the 400 2.8 ok after it fell from the table?
Thankfully yes 😅
@@mattgranger accidental drop test was successful 👍👍
Way too much for me. Two cameras and two lenses works for me these days. Always in a camera bag in my carry on. And a pocket camera.
Cool
The gym training will be paying off regardless even if it's less than what you take normally.
I hope the family reasons causing the partial cancellation get resolved happily and quickly.
Thank you 🙏🏼
Did you end up using everything?
See description - what I packed changed. And the trip only starts today, meeting my guests in Iceland soon 👍🏼
@@mattgranger sorry, should have paid better attention.
carry on so much gear is nice and cool.. but the headache come when some officer would actually ask you to remove every single item from the bag and put them in the plastic tray for them to scan through the security thing.. then after you have to pack them all in the bag again.. And now everyone in the Queue will just look and stare at you like come on what's up with this guy carrying like many camera and many lenses. Not to mention.. thereafter some people will eye ball you. not good feeling.
You must be flying by a charter jet . Because what Airline allows you all that as hand luggage lol
One backpack and a laptop bag? As I described - most non budget airlines
I hope you'll have a great chiropractor with you.
I hope you didn't break anything dude. At least you have proof for the insurance.
Thankfully it’s ok 👍🏼

The pre-sale ends in 18 hours!
@@UnconventionalReasoning I was actually referring to the bag with the very expensive lens falling off the table and making a crunching sound. Not that Stef doesn't deserve an OMG also😀
@@nollpa2696 Yes, the bag falling off the table was the wrong kind of "microphone test". It does emphasize the weight and volume challenge that limits the protection of the bag itself.
and what if your Bag gets robbed in luggage ?
I lock my bags and keep them in sight.
Did you have to hire 2 sherpas to bring all that equipment?
If you have something left over that you don't use, give it to me.
Nope, as I said, this isn’t the biggest kit I’ve managed on solo travel
FE looks tiny there like a toy.
Less is more
No, it’s not. Sometimes less is better. Not always though.
@@mattgranger hehe
I already beat you to the punch, I travel wit 250lbs of gear all the time and all day nd everyday. Been posting this since 2020
….ok
That’s a lot of gear lol not sure if all is needed for a bird trip. I think if I were to do it. I will be taking z9 with z 600 f4 I.4 tc, then z8 on z100-400. Then third lens will be 24-120 f4. That will be it in one bag.
Cheers. As I said, that is for more than a bird trip. It’s also for multi camera video production, and portraiture. And of course - Iceland landscapes.
Thinking that you could do everything with just a 14-30 and a 28-400. For slight differences in quality that no one notices?
Sorry, that's stupid
The annoying part is that no one notices the slight differences in quality, except me. And that's enough to want the more complicated collection of gear. 😀
@@UnconventionalReasoning yes. It is kind of OCD
@@carlosandreviana9448 I disagree with characterizing it as "OCD". It's an appreciation of the image at a higher level of evaluation than the typical person does.
@@UnconventionalReasoning pixel peep is OCD whatever you like it or not
you should just use your iPhone then
WTF is 100lbs?
