This is such a brilliant conversation about masculinity and how the goal posts are being shifted by online discourse. As a middle school teacher I try so hard to help young men understand that masculinity is not defined by lambos and ladies, but integrity and respect.

I think an aspect of "aggrieved entitlement" that was a bit glossed over was the fact that young men feel like they're still under the same pressure from society to be natural patriarchs, but don't have the support network that their fathers had. It's not just that they're losing out on a thing that's nice so have, but the very tools used to fulfill what it means to "be a man" are being dismantled. And the only group that consistently recognizes that frustration as valid is, regrettably, the "manosphere".
Unfortunately, the manosphere also instinctively knows that this frustration is what keeps them in business, and so instead of actually helping men by dismantling the idea that they _need_ to be patriarchs, the manosphere doubles down.

I think it glossed over the actual problem and it doesn't help democrats. I don't think gen z man experience the same gender divide that other generations experienced but are still told by the left and by the women in their life that they are privileged. Gen z man goes to college at lower rates than gen z women and that have a great consequence in their dating lives, college educated women are not very likely to date non college educated man so they options are rather limited. That together with how toxic and competitive the modern dating process has become is really fulling a wave of misogny in these people, which of course is not doing them any favors.

YES! He has MAN SKILLS and understands basic human compassion toward all people.
Man skills I noticed lacking among my trust-fund peers in college (I wasn’t one of them): not being able to put air in your car tires, not knowing how to check your oil, being afraid of killing spiders, not knowing how to do laundry so they would just throw clothes away after wearing and by new ones, etc etc.
I had one guy whose fave color was pink sigh contentedly with his head in my lap and say it was so cute how I knew more about football than him. Broke up with him the next day. THESE ARE PROBLEMS GUYS!!!

      Doug Emhoff is another!
Before I knew aught about K Harris beyond Biden picking her for VP, I saw Doug on a chat show saying he'd divested himself of stocks to go be Second Gentleman!
I felt that showed an awesome level of support for his wife, and a degree of seriousness about public service from the 2 of them that can set a rare example in our political climate! Doug looks good on her!
I was hoping Harris would pick Walz for their matching grins and the, well, joy he could bring as her colleague.
When Doug called Tim his "new best friend", I hope he wasn't just wisecracking about the public hug, because Tim & Doug also seem to have compatible cheer.

I'm a 50-year-old Canadian university professor who watches most Crooked Media podcasts AND many podcasts by stand-up comedians, including Theo Von and Tom Segura. I hold very left wing views and probably have what the right wing calls Trump Derangement Syndrome.
While I may not represent the typical demographic of Theo's podcast, there's probably a larger overlap between his audience and yours than you might imagine. Also, he recently interviewed Bernie Sanders and, unlike with the Trump interview, agreed with Bernie on most political issues. Hopefully, the 20-30-year-old viewers got something out of that episode as well.

Hello my northern brother. I am now a 40 year old stay at home father, who once held pretty right leaning views, and now consider myself much more left leaning. I too likely suffer from TDS , generally the itching and burning doesn't last for more than an hour, I'm one of the lucky ones. Together we can raise awareness about this horrible illness and eradicate the source of this nasty syndrome.
Imo, these are not the democrats of the 90's nor are they the republicans of the 2000's. I think it's ok for us to evolve how we feel politically, as I believe the parties are shifting and evolving as well. Point being, I too am not his typical audience, but I only started to care about politics in the past few years, as well as I'm a big advocate for mental health and more specifically for recovery services and general addiction support. That's where Theo comes in, he's in that circle as well. He may hold some beliefs I do not, but he also cares a lot about some subjects I'm very passionate about. He's a great interviewer, as well and I don't feel like he's one of the ones in that circle that's just straight up lying and leading young men astray for clout. He might have his skeletons but that's my takeaway from him.

I totally agree. For the Joe Rogan, Theo Von, Lex Fridman crowd, vast majority are young men, but in terms of political affiliation, my guess is 30% are right wing, 20% are left wing, and the rest are moderate/independent/apolitical. The only people doing outreach to this crowd are right wing politicians and influencers trying to persuade that 50%. That’s a big reason why Gen Z men are tending rightward. Because, other than Bernie (who has gotten a ton of respect from them for it), democratic politicians just don’t show up to their media sphere.
When they say they feel “forgotten,” this is what they mean. This is a HUGE slice of the persuadable electorate. They value long form podcasts because it makes guests seem human and authentic. They don’t trust interviews on mainstream media because they assume they are scripted and carefully choreographed. If Kamala doesn’t show up to a long form podcast for the entire campaign, people will assume she is just another politician who is afraid of going off script and therefore untrustworthy. In order to vote for someone. They want to make sure they are a down to earth human being.
If Kamala can just show up on Joe Rogan and be authentic and show people that she is not the person right wing media portrays her to be, that would do more to boost her support than any single campaign rally. It would be a huge missed opportunity if not.

I'm a 30 year old fella in academia who is to the left of the Crooked hosts. I'm not a regular listener of any podcasts in that world, but listened to the JRE pre-pandemic and listen to occasional episodes of Lex Fridman and Theo Von these days. Mostly comes down to the guest. This assessment of the average Rogan-verse listener is mostly spot-on, but I think you've seriously underestimated how much of their audience is made up of hate-watching progressives and liberals disarmed by the charm of some of the personalities involved -- Theo Von in particular, as I think you can see in some of these comments.
Trump going on this podcast tour was sort of inevitable, specially as the broader political canon presented by the less restrained hosts in this sphere (e.g. Rogan or Hinchcliffe) began to take shape. You can keep an ear to the ground in conservative spaces and hear the latest talking points or disinformation efforts pop up in the Rogan-verse a week after they hit reddit and twitter. To be totally honest with you, I've been hoping that democratic messengers (not nominees -- thinking Crooked Media or Abdul El-Sayed types) went on more of those shows to prevent an alternative perspective to listeners. As it stands a lot of these shows buy fully into anti-woke, anti-academia, pro-Trump narratives, and it leaves a lot of the impressionable listeners in a bubble that the few left-wing guests that do come on (e.g. Hasan, Destiny, Cenk) are ill-suited to help pop. Worse yet, the closer to the center of that universe you get, the more aggressive and direct the political messaging gets.
I know they're just podcasts, but I do worry about what'll come of Gen Z men if this particular cultural sphere goes uncontested.

Your glib mischaracterizations in the first half was crazy lol. To start, Theo von has little to do with the manosphere. Also, young gen z men are not primarily watching his podcast. For the first half of this episode you created a vison of what you thought this cohort was like, and it was painfully wrong. You're both my age, 40 something, but you sounded like someone in their 60's trying to pull the "all these dang kids don't wanna work anymore" by clearly not understanding the group your reporting on lol.
Listen, genz are listening to adin ross, sneako, no jumper, full send/nelk boys, fresh and fit etc... Just go look at the guest theo has on, they're geared towards my age group . (ie., dana carvey, tommy lee, sal vulcano, joey diaz, dax sheperd, tony robbins, YG, rain wilson) that's just some of the recent guest from the last year, lol, come on guys, it should be a crime to lump theo in with the Rogans, tony henchcliffs, or Fridman etc.. of the world.
It seems like your confusing genz with older millienals and younger gen x. And guys, I really like your podcast, i'm farther left then the host and guests at Pod Save, but I generally find you guys likable and almost comforting. But, in this epsiode, your contemptuous and smugness was really showing. It was giving off the "coastal, out of touch" liberal stereotype. Maybe, I wouldn't have picked up on that if you two weren't so wrong about your misconflations of both the manosphere and gen z men.

Just because you are an older millennial, doesn't give you the right to paint older millennials and younger Gen X with one brush. Pretty smug yourself in judging two whole groups of Americans. And the worst part is your stereotyping is just to argue with a podcast. At least their stereotyping is an attempt to understand another generation. That's a noble goal to articulate your thoughts about another generation, even if you get something wrong. You can learn something now about that generation that you put your views out there. Not so noble to use us older millennials and Gen X to criticize a podcast.

It's more than simply, "I can't make this joke anymore." It has become acceptable in a lot of left/progressive circles to overtly bash white men. On the one hand , men have gotten away with far too much crap for far too long, so maybe they're due some grief. On the other hand, if it's not acceptable to bash all these other groups, why is acceptable to bash white men? And the YOUNG men you're talking about are looking around and feeling like they're being punished for the suns of previous generations. Of they're not happy about that.

@@franjkav You’re right: criticism is not bashing. And some criticism is fair and warranted. And some of what’s going on is also bashing. Those two things are not mutually exclusive. Is it being overly critical? Would making those "jokes" constantly to someone when it is unwanted be considered bashing? Would calling that hypothetical person to task also be bashing?
My guess is you think a mostly decent guy who is young and doesn't get life yet makes one innocent joke and now hundreds of people come and constantly criticize him. How often do you think something even remotely like that happens?
Freedom of speech is not freedom from consequences. I associate with one person who is always on about complaining about trans people and being inclusive of other groups. I put up with him because he's my best friends brother, and don't have to see him often. Is he bashing me? Or others? I point out how he is wrong in pretty much every conversation, but keep it light so the three of us can have a pleasant outing. IF he wasn't my friends brother I would tell him off. Is that bashing? @@SilortheBlade I hope you’ll forgive me for keeping this at the high level, but I’m not going to address your every question and point with specifics. Actually, I agree with most of what you’re saying. Also I see in you someone who is working very hard to deny that there’s any bashing of young white men. I teach at a community college and see how freely some people are to say things about these young men that it would be 100% unacceptable to say about any other group. And I see you presenting all kinds of thoughts and ideas that say (to my understanding, anyway), that they’re just overreacting. I have friends on the political right who work equally hard to deny that white nationalism and nazis are a real thing. Went to high school with Theo, a year behind him. He was a seriously chill, laid back dude, and he was one of the few upperclassmen I have memories of treating me decently. He also wrote some funny ass shit for our English department's yearly poetry journal compilation. I vaguely recall loving one about getting attacked by squirrels in the park. I used to joke that he sold his soul to MTV to get out of suburbia (which makes it weird that his stand-up comedy seemed focused on being from a poor rural area when we lived in what's basically the suburbs of New Orleans, a major hub for commuters who drove in to the city for work). I was happy to see him succeed, even if I thought his Netflix special came across as a less polished Jeff Foxworthy. It's honestly kind of sad to see him falling this far, but I'll still respect the guy I wasn't exactly friends with, but at least friendly acquaintances with, back in the day.
It also amuses me that you call him a "young" comedian when he's 44. Makes me think I'm not quite middle-aged YET.

I’m a 59 year old Liberal Atheist Florida Man who has listened to Rogan and Fridman and was a huge Musk fanboy until recently. Tesla owner since 2013. I have a CS degree and am currently working as a consultant for a Si valley startup.
I’m solidly in the Harris/Walz camp and most of my “techbro” friends and colleagues are as well.
The Biden admin messed up by making Musk their enemy. There is a universe where an American car company with the explicit mission is to “accelerate the transition to renewable energy” gets invited to an event about Americas leading role in that transition. Instead GM and Ford, who have consistently fought against that transition were lauded as “innovators”.
Musk is an asshat and he doesn’t like unions because of course he doesn’t. But the level of disdain and smugness that snarky elites like you and the reflexive hating on billionaires is quite off-putting to young men who admire and aspire to earn wealth.
Young men in their “Atlas Shrugged” phase are not being served well by the dominant media.
Listen - I also believe Donald Trump is an existential threat to my country. But instead of vilifying the nerds in your high school who loved violent video games and MMA dudes, we should be aware that young women are kicking their asses in most of the success metrics that matter.
There is a surfeit of psychological dysfunction among young men.
That’s one reason why Tim Walz was such a brilliant choice for VP. He should be going on Rogan and Fridman and Vonn and project his wholesome service-oriented view of masculinity on a crowd that will be surprisingly receptive to it.

100% this. I love these guys but they conveniently ignore the Biden administrations attempts to hold back the electrification of cars in favour of massive union corruption on the level of the Fraternal Order of Police. The whole 'you led Mary and it matters' incident is HUGELY relevant to why Elon, who famously has a condition which makes it harder for him to deal with social matters, is fed up with them. They literally snubbed the most advanced car manufacturer in the world, an American company and gave credit to a fossil fuel chugged ICE (internal combustion engine) legacy manufacturer which did not lead, and does not matter. And the whole billionaire thing is insane and irrational. Your level of money does not affect how good a person you are. A poor serial killer and a rich serial killer are both horrible people. And being poor or rich doesn't make you a serial killer.
Just because Elon is right about getting to Mars, about how big a thing it will be if The Boring Company actually makes significant improvements in TBMs, and electrification of vehicles, and robotics doesn't mean his political opinions being wrong in some (but definitely not all) areas is relevant to that. Plus he was literally on their side for decades until they started being irrational to him and snubbed his companies because of unions of all archaic things to worry about. Even though his non-union workers are financially better off without being a member, by far, and are quite invested in doing good for humanity.
But hey ho, I'm sure that GM worker who proclaims that EVs are bad and namby pamby is the vote democrats want, not intelligent people who recognise the importance of switching to EVs and actually want children's lungs to be full of unpolluted air.

The requirements of patriarchy/patriarchal culture makes them so delicate. The goal is to make the standard of masculinity so out of reach, so impossible to satisfy, that ANY thing (using a straw to drink, wearing pink, having your female date pay for dinner instead of you) can knock that entire house of cards down.
And, couple that with consumer culture that depends on people feeling bad enough about themselves to feel that they "need" to buy a certain product to become closer to being more socially acceptable, and you've got a mess of podcast boys buying classes, strange virility pills and memberships to desperately be seen as "manly".
I think I see why Trump is targeting these young guys: the world is changing so fast and instead of using those young brains to keep up and ask questions, these guys are clinging to a fantastical past that never was; which Trump pushes quite readily.

I fondly tell people that I voted for Ross Perot back in 1992 when I was 22 (I'm a Democrat but have always felt skeeved out by Bill Clinton) - but when I really thought back I remembered it was my intention to vote Perot, but I never actually made it to the polls. I didn't become a reliably regular voter until my 30's despite my interest in politics, and I suspect that is even more likely to be the case with young men who consume these types of podcasts. There's also the matter a lot of these young men have young girlfriends and the ever present possibility of an unplanned pregnancy, for them voting for the Party promising to maintain abortion rights might be a bigger draw than an old man talking about cocaine and UFC.
