The chances of finding a job are grim for the four million long-term unemployed in the U.S., but Joe Carbone is looking to change that in his Connecticut town. Scott Pelley reports.
After being long-term unemployed for a few years and discouraged after a layoff in the sciences, I finally got a break at a job fair and landed a good job that is below my education level and technical skills, but a fair decent wage and good benefits and I like it. It's easy, straight forward computer data entry office work for medical records on a federal contract. It is pretty low stress-especially on night shift. I have been there full-time permanent for a few years now and enjoy it as much as you can with a job. I wish those of you out there still looking the best of luck and don't give up.

Employers tend to pigeon hole individuals. If a person has been a carpenter for a number of years, it does not mean that person can not move in a totally different direction regardless of age. It's called 'transferable skills" This is the problem with employers. It does not matter whether a person is 40, 50, 60 or whether they have been are a street cleaner or Janitor, if a person shows willing, then that is more beneficial than someone who comes with the attitude that they know it all and attempt to make changes. " Never judge a book by it's cover." !!

even more blood boiling is when at the end of the interview they say they dont have any positions open. then you can say "If you really dont have any openings then why did you even bother calling me in here? Your wasting MY time and YOURS."
I was underemployed for 3 years after graduating in 2009 with an engineering degree. Wife and I had 8 year careers flushed down the toilet in 2020 due to COVID.
I’m 42 and experienced this! According to a close friend of mine in HR for a Fortune 500, the application algorithms eliminate anyone over 35 for most positions.
Totally BS and only used to justify why they don't work. I only have a high school diploma, learned a skill and was recruited over the phone from a European company for $140K/yr. Oh yeah, I was 56 when they called.
Started learning how to do a little urban farming and grow my own food. I highly recommend many people learn this skill because if this unemployment deal continues and there is another recession or depression, many of you will be SOL. As long as you have cover and food for you and your family, what else more could you want? Learn how to be self sustainable!
this shit is sooo true about how finding jobs has changed- my father accuses me of not "pursuing" a job hard enough- "you go in every day and demand to speak to the manager"- this strategy worked in the past but no longer because everyone is conditioned to text messaging- they dont even want to speak with you vocally, most employers will only deal with text and emails.
That happened to me, I lost my good paying job in 2009 and couldn't find any jobs in my field so I went to work at Target. While working at Target I continued to apply for jobs until I found something better. It's easier to get a job when you're already employed.
I know the feeling. I'm 42. Iwas unemployed for 2 years. I applied for jobs like Burger King. I was told I was over-qualified. Are you kidding? I'm just trying to feed my family. I'm a manager now and I'm not really happy where I'm at, but no way am I giving up this job for anything.
This is what happens when we encourage everyone in a couple of generations to go to college to make yourself stand out to advance in careers instead of pursuing your own passion and creating jobs. Too many applicants, not enough jobs created.
Brewman the most relevant new companies are based in computer science, math, genetics, robotics, bioengineering. If you dont go to college, you probably wont have access to these areas.
What's really heartbreaking is while college educated professionals are helpless and unemployed non college educated professionals that learned a trade are still making $100K+/yr with full benefits.
@@person-ug9zq There are many reasons why people in trades are unemployed. Some reasons are their fault, some are not. First, what exactly is "stable work"? And it's also possible sometimes a tradesman has to follow the work. I've had to move to a new locartion several times when work dried up where I was living.
I can't believe I have to pay for unemployment. Worked multiple jobs my entire life and then when I need it, I get next to nothing! I am sick and tired of paying into systems I apparently can't use when I need it.
Pretty much I could not even get it...It's math there are not enough jobs for everyone that need jobs. NOW if we would have focused on mom and pop shops and healthy strong local economy this would not be as bad..The average business largely does not care or want talented people if they have to pay them and if they can hire someone that will work for cheap they will. Your degree only mean that you will have to be paid also there are millions of talented people out there. Bring back the freaking MOM and POPS, Jobs largely will not support you because most are not designed too.
There are tons of people that abuse the welfare system, and one of the horrible things about it is that there are lots of people who legitimately need it. Those are the people who pay the biggest price.

Joe Carbone is a gem!! What a guy to fight for these precious people against the establishment. I can see the passion in his eyes and that he puts his whole heart into giving long-term unemployed people hope again. Joe really seems to understand their plight.
To add, I see more people shopping at the 99 cents only stores instead of the larger supermarkets. Because store prices are so high, people have no choice but to shop there. You will see large supermarkets consolidate or go out of business totally.
The year is now 2021 I don't the big stores were affected at all you have to remember when you buy something at the dollar tree stores you're getting smaller Packaging for the price. Some things are a bargain some are not
The 99 cent stores have raised their prices and some of the stuff is more expensive and lower quality than regular stores. I only go in there to buy certain veggies which are cheaper.

I’m 56 at my last job interview I was asked “ How long can we rely on you being capable of work” So I replied “ It’s 8 am ,I’m here for a job,I should be asking how long can YOU guarantee ME work? I know I can perform but the big question is HOW LONG CAN YOU PERFORM TO KEEP ME IN WORK.In saying this I quickly put the onus on THEM to justify me taking THEIR OFFER. Igot the job by the way. Be ready to put them on the defence,remember it’s YOUR SKILLS THEY NEED.
In my case jobs that I considered beneath me or not my cup of tea are now perfected for me; so being unemployed has forced me to lower my standards, I have no "dream job" because now getting any job will be considered a dream come true for me.

What nonsense! It is not a change of mind. It is something else. What is sad is that they tried to dismiss a fact that admitted - out of 100 people in that program, only 53 found jobs. The other people have yet to find one.

I was one of those unemployed for 2 years during that financial crisis, I couldn't find anything in my field despite being in my early 30s (I still looked young). Eventually I swallowed my pride and went to work at Target for a third of what I made before and continued to apply for jobs, eventually I found something better.
Exactly, THANK YOU! I'm living in my dad's 10'x5' dining room now, BTW. I've gotta fix computers out of a little enclosed canopy in the backyard, because living in a dining room (with just a bed, computer desk, and some plastic drawers) there's no room to be ripping apart computers. Many American jobs are being outsourced to other countries like India and China because big corporations want to make a huge profit. If you hire americans they will want benefits and decent pay, if you hire a Asian person, they are very hard workers and they will work for pennies and not complain. Also America is in deep debt so we are depending on other countries for support. Its sad that America is going downhill, people are unhappy, and stressed, factories are closing down... its sad
Yes, when your older it's harder to find a job. I stop looking into my field(without success) & decide to take any job. The only one who call me back was for a crossing guard position. It was only part time job during school days. Better than nothing so I took the job. They place me a few blocks from my house🏚. ALSO, I decided to file for early Social Security at 62. Being a crossing guard isn't the best paying job I've ever had, but it's the most rewarding & fun job I've ever had😀. For the first time in my life I enjoy going to work. The kids👫 bring the best in me through all of there happy faces😀 & big smiles.😀👌
That's great to find a rewarding and fun job. Most people I've known have hated their jobs -- myself included. What a sad commentary that most of us spend at least one-third of our most vibrant years doing things we dislike for people/companies that mean nothing to us. I hope you'll have enough money in retirement, considering the reduction in benefits from retiring early.
@@karlhungus5554 yes, I've saved all my life. My condo🏠 & car🚗 are paid off. No credit card debt, either. My only problem was finding that job at my age. I rather work part time, plus I have the whole summer off, plus 2 weeks off during Christmas Break & one week off for Spring Break. Yes, 😀👍

Filling employment applications at 50 is never a good feeling. "Nothing is certain in this world except death and taxes" no matter what tax is unavoidable.
Since this episode aired, there are MILLIONS of unemployed workers who are now UNDEREMPLOYED. They have jobs, but are paid wages that are barely enough to live on. And which do not utilize their education or skill set. The standard of living in this country has declined drastically.
I was interviewed on RT News in 2011 - Been job hunting since JANUARY 2009. Can't even land a job flipping burgers!!! I can build and repair computers. I can't find ANYTHING - only random $8/h temp gigs here and there, nothing stable - So I'm living in my dad's dining room (since 2010). I'm fixing computers from home to survive, but have to charge $40 for $100+ jobs because everyone is on welfare/under-employed. I can't afford to move anywhere else. The problem is the indoctrination of working for other people and not learning how to work for themselves. People are dependant other people to make, we should be running our own businesses.
Very True. But it has to work hand and hand. Creating second and third ways to make money while you are working the main gig. And now....jobs should be seen as a gig. No one is safe.
Starting your own business is a great idea if you have start up money. Most business ventures take seed money. Where do you get that if your funds are already stretched thin?

Damn right. I actually asked that exact question one time. The interview avoiding it all outright and said in response " we'll call you when we have a position open." I reply" yeah right...bullshit. Thanks for wasting my gas money, time and hope. You can tell the federal government that you succeeded in getting another application filled out JUST to satisfied the " attempted" employment Census that you job vendors have to look good with under their eyes. -_-"
I don't know if these people know, but it can help if you dye your hair, lose weight and update your look, this is what companies look at because they want to see if you have the stamina to work. I would advise to also start your own little business and do not depend on any company to give you a job, it actually is risky to depend on someone else. So if you do get another job, save and live below your means and work on your side hustle. :)
The entire American expierence needs a reboot. Kids need to live with their parents longer, the first two years of college - tech school should be free, and unemployment needs to be met with government help and education. We keep trying the same old thing while expecting different results.
Wow, thank you all for sharing your struggles. In spite of the deliberate American greed cruelty act that has attacked the finances of hard-working, innocent, productive people, we still have our dignity and hope that our persistence will pay off. This is inspiration to our young who, forbiddingly, could face the same pressures in the future.
Great program. If the government funded programs like this more instead of food stamps, it would actually save money. I also think these type of programs should be implemented earlier. If you can't find a job in 6 - 8 weeks, you should be able to join the program.
If I lose my job, I'll not find another at age 59. I'll live in my car until it breaks down, then onto the street, then soon out of everyone's hair without medical care.

"Must be currently employed". If have a job then you don't need 1 unless you hate it or want better pay. All those people could've made a proposal to start a company instead of begging for 1.
It's designed to keep people down. I don't believe that people are in complete control of their lives, they are to a certain point but too many people can decide your fate.
I'm terrible at dealing with people, that's why I didn't make it anywhere, I've never had the best attitude but when nobody has ever liked you that will happen, you just stop caring. I have to be honest I'm not going to survive this lock jaw system that's in place. I think I'm slow, but my parents would never admit it so I'm pretty fucked.

I was unemployed for two years many years ago. It's constant stress trying to find a job, and survive. I was scared. I'm praying for all the unemployed.
Back when I was young I didn't have money for college and my parents weren't able to send me. So, after high school I went in the Army and learned a skill. Left the Army 6 years later with a marketable skill, no debt, nice savings and several years with mid mgmt experience. The skill kept me employed for 42 years making over $100K most of the last 10 years. Never without a job when I wanted one and was able to work around the world as I desired. Never needed or collected unemployment, food stamps or other assistance. Retired in Europe 4 years ago with a small pension and US Social Security. My monthly living expenses are around 1/3 my SS check and most of my time is spent riding a Harley (purchased new in the US 12 years ago) around southern Europe searching out little known cultures, art, museums, ruins and history. Still only got a high school diploma. And so many of these mega educated unemployed used to look down their noses at people like me. I have to laugh thiinking about my favorite aunt harassing me on trips back to the US about how smart I was and how I could have really done something with myself if only I had gone to college. i'd laugh answering her with, "Jeez, all I do now is spend half my time flying a helicopter around Europe and the other hald riding a Harley around Europe. Do you realize how many millions of people are sitting in high rise office buildings in cubicles with no windows just wishing they could be me?"
This happened to my husband after 45 years of employment. This has changed our family. Now, the rules for unemployment is I think 6 months. We are trying to sell our house, and need to do this soon as I am the only one working. And yes, I feel ashamed.

When you are out of work, you just have to be persistent to get back on that horse again. It just sucks that some of us have to wait longer than others to get that gig to regain the sense of dignity.
+The 54th Deadline the issue is it doesnt work that way anymore, you no longer walk into an employer and apply on the spot, everything is handled over the internet and if you dont use the right words your app is rejected never to be seen by human eyes, and sooner or later you run out of places to apply at esp of they wont train and pay you a life sustaining wage

I've been there before, and it is embarrassing going around and around to each and every store, asking someone if they are hiring. You just have to use every practical trick in the book, and then sooner or later something will turn up. You just can't give up.

January 2023 - I was laid off along with 30% of the company from a huge home builder. I was an escrow officer. Thankfully I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for 9 years now. I had a job replacing over 100% of my income within 24 hours. Trades are invaluable.
@@jsmith108 For one thing…..I never gave up. I became the victor rather than the victim. I gained more knowledge, learned new skills and changed my attitude and mindset. I made myself more competitive and marketable. I no longer saw myself as the victim or casualty of a poor economy. It wasn’t my fault. Why take it personally? You have to come to a place where YOU have the power to make the change. Change isn’t pleasant or kind but sometimes it’s the only way to extricate yourself from the BS you’ve created for yourself. We all have the power to start over from scratch and reinvent ourselves to be better. Never give up. Never give in.
I’m sure the upper levels kept their golden parachute.When I retired and wanted to return to the ICU bedside to maintain my RN skills, no takers. My RN pension ,it’s a decent one ,was sustaining me during the years prior to my claiming my Social Security benefits . The pension and Social Security benefits were my golden parachute . I received a dependent benefit as I have a minor child ,in addition to my own benefit . It was literally a game changer for my finances. After I retired from my RN job, as I was being pushed out, I sought part-time work to maintain my intensive care skills ,no takers . Thank God I have a pension that sustained me until the blessing of my Social Security benefits kicked in.

I have just joined this sad place. The first week, I spent in shock. I was trying to get my job back. Done with that. Now I am getting a job,. will take anything reasonable.
I then told them " if you change your mind and wise up realizing I am MORE than qualified for this position..my price just went UP. Otherwise, don't ever waste my time again. It's your loss"

I get a hope of "maybe it will happen today" - 6 months later and over 200 applications still nothing. When will this change? I don't even know how to help myself when my future is up to someone else.
Hang in there man. I was out of work for a little over 3 years. Just found a decent job starting at the end of this month. This economy blows. How did I get a job? A lot of hard work and a lot more plain luck. Getting a job is like winning the lottery these days IMHO.
lower your expectations I also have a degree from renowned school and as 28 year old almost ten years of work experience from different places now I am working in restaurant at least I have a job and can pay may bills.Even though I work under less educated and less experienced people than myself but I do not complain and I love my job, it is just life and life is not fair. Take it as it is cause it could have been even worse.
Start as leafblower, end up with your own landscaping company. I started at the bottom, now I run the joint. Don't ever be afraid to fall to the bottom of the heap. Be afraid of staying there.
if they have anything on those job apps that would automatically disqualify you then they should just put it on the first page so theyre not wasting your time! especially in the interview
Job market is really brutal. You have to be a real trooper to get ahead. Work a ton of hours with 2 jobs if necessary. Work work work. If you lose a job get anything you can find and keep moving. If you stop, your a sitting duck.
I am grateful to have a secure job: union, retirement, health insurance I can afford; but these people had "secure jobs" it's hard knowing, when seeing things like this, that my job could disappear, and I work hard to be grateful and not take it for granted.
Don't worry, four years after this video was uploaded, we are learning that America is doing just great (at least the Democrat Convention tells us that).
I became a trucker at 48 and nearly 3 yrs later I've tripled my previous income. I'm the only female on my team, and black female at my company...most of the guys are under 30, and the older guys in their late 40s have trucked over 20 yrs. I live in Atlanta but I transport railroad containers in New Jersey and Chicago. I'm in the top 5 in production. At one point I did try to go back into the "regular" workforce... it was quickly apparent - at 49, I was too old. I feel very blessed that i was able to transition.
I'm considering driving,but I rarely drive a car and never drove a truck. Live in NYC, can move anywhere. I'm not sure if my fear of driving big rigs is psychological or it's just thst I've never done it before. Would appreciate your thoughts. Very happy you're gainfully employee, God bless.

There is young discrimination as well. You aren't take seriously for the serious jobs because of your age. Young people are mainly only really considered for entry to mid-level jobs compared to older applicants who are more senior level.

It could be your occupation is in high demand. I have been out of work first for 8 months, volunteered, then hired for 2 years, then lost a job again, and now I have been out of work for 6 months. I have a college degree. Because I was terminated over simple crap in the past two jobs, it looks like I can't be trusted. I have gotten emails that the job was posted but someone is hired and you fit the requirements but wait for a call for an interview. And older people aren't used to social media.
I got laid off from a major tech company after they announced record profits! 500 of us were given the pink slip that day, and I even had to train my Taiwan replacement before leaving (or else not get the severance package). I have an MS in engineering with 18 years of experience in various roles. I've worked my tail off for my entire career. I'm currently trying to get into a new field that's less "outsource-able" by taking training courses... I hope future employers can see how past experience easily translates to this new field. This new field also suits my strengths. But what everyone tells me is that it is extremely difficult to make a career transition like this while not having a job. But I don't have a ton of other options. It is tough being unemployed... you feel isolated, self esteem takes a hit, it's embarrassing socializing with your friends. I've got a family to support and can't do that. You want to be productive, a valuable member of society, role model for your kids, the husband your wife deserves, but you can't... it's like a downward spiral.
I am so glad that I saw all this coming years ahead. Going to college is just a ticket to be educated and be creative in this real world. Self employment is the only way to go. Find a skill that is demanding and start a business. Save, save, save, get out of debt and invest. It is tough out there people. Jobs don't last that long anymore. I've been self employed since 2006 (at 32 years old) for the last 10 years and on my third business and very satisfied. I get job offers all the time, but will never ask for a job again. How do you afford the self employment tax that you have to pay annually? A person that makes less than $26,000 per year can wound up with a tax bill of $4,000 to $5,000 per year. The majority of this is the social security tax.
Not everyone is interested in being self-employed and you forget to mention that there are plenty of entrepreneur jobs that do fail for a variety of reasons. Like or not, that's the fact that needs to be addressed more as well. Only a minority of people, including entrepreneurs, are willing to speak that "inconvenient" truth. As, you correctly said, life is tough/cruel and one can expect it to remain so. Are there any solutions for everyone? I don't know and honestly, I don't think so. Just because it worked for you, it won't work for others - others can attest to that.

this shit is sooo true about how finding jobs has changed- my father accuses me of not "pursuing" a job hard enough- "you go in every day and demand to speak to the manager"- this strategy worked in the past but no longer because everyone is conditioned to text messaging- they dont even want to speak with you vocally, most employers will only deal with text and emails.

That happened to me, I lost my good paying job in 2009 and couldn't find any jobs in my field so I went to work at Target. While working at Target I continued to apply for jobs until I found something better. It's easier to get a job when you're already employed.
I know the feeling. I'm 42. Iwas unemployed for 2 years. I applied for jobs like Burger King. I was told I was over-qualified. Are you kidding? I'm just trying to feed my family. I'm a manager now and I'm not really happy where I'm at, but no way am I giving up this job for anything.
This is what happens when we encourage everyone in a couple of generations to go to college to make yourself stand out to advance in careers instead of pursuing your own passion and creating jobs. Too many applicants, not enough jobs created.

Brewman the most relevant new companies are based in computer science, math, genetics, robotics, bioengineering. If you dont go to college, you probably wont have access to these areas.

And it's also possible sometimes a tradesman has to follow the work. I've had to move to a new locartion several times when work dried up where I was living.

NOW if we would have focused on mom and pop shops and healthy strong local economy this would not be as bad..The average business largely does not care or want talented people if they have to pay them and if they can hire someone that will work for cheap they will. Your degree only mean that you will have to be paid also there are millions of talented people out there. Bring back the freaking MOM and POPS, Jobs largely will not support you because most are not designed too.

To add, I see more people shopping at the 99 cents only stores instead of the larger supermarkets. Because store prices are so high, people have no choice but to shop there. You will see large supermarkets consolidate or go out of business totally.
The year is now 2021 I don't the big stores were affected at all you have to remember when you buy something at the dollar tree stores you're getting smaller Packaging for the price. Some things are a bargain some are not
The 99 cent stores have raised their prices and some of the stuff is more expensive and lower quality than regular stores. I only go in there to buy certain veggies which are cheaper.

I’m 56 at my last job interview I was asked “ How long can we rely on you being capable of work” So I replied “ It’s 8 am ,I’m here for a job,I should be asking how long can YOU guarantee ME work? I know I can perform but the big question is HOW LONG CAN YOU PERFORM TO KEEP ME IN WORK.In saying this I quickly put the onus on THEM to justify me taking THEIR OFFER. Igot the job by the way. Be ready to put them on the defence,remember it’s YOUR SKILLS THEY NEED.
In my case jobs that I considered beneath me or not my cup of tea are now perfected for me; so being unemployed has forced me to lower my standards, I have no "dream job" because now getting any job will be considered a dream come true for me.

I was one of those unemployed for 2 years during that financial crisis, I couldn't find anything in my field despite being in my early 30s (I still looked young). Eventually I swallowed my pride and went to work at Target for a third of what I made before and continued to apply for jobs, eventually I found something better.

I've gotta fix computers out of a little enclosed canopy in the backyard, because living in a dining room (with just a bed, computer desk, and some plastic drawers) there's no room to be ripping apart computers. Many American jobs are being outsourced to other countries like India and China because big corporations want to make a huge profit. If you hire americans they will want benefits and decent pay, if you hire a Asian person, they are very hard workers and they will work for pennies and not complain. Also America is in deep debt so we are depending on other countries for support. Its sad that America is going downhill, people are unhappy, and stressed, factories are closing down... its sad
Yes, when your older it's harder to find a job. I stop looking into my field(without success) & decide to take any job. The only one who call me back was for a crossing guard position. It was only part time job during school days. Better than nothing so I took the job. They place me a few blocks from my house🏚. ALSO, I decided to file for early Social Security at 62. Being a crossing guard isn't the best paying job I've ever had, but it's the most rewarding & fun job I've ever had😀. For the first time in my life I enjoy going to work. The kids👫 bring the best in me through all of there happy faces😀 & big smiles.😀👌
That's great to find a rewarding and fun job. Most people I've known have hated their jobs -- myself included. What a sad commentary that most of us spend at least one-third of our most vibrant years doing things we dislike for people/companies that mean nothing to us. I hope you'll have enough money in retirement, considering the reduction in benefits from retiring early.

Since this episode aired, there are MILLIONS of unemployed workers who are now UNDEREMPLOYED. They have jobs, but are paid wages that are barely enough to live on. And which do not utilize their education or skill set. The standard of living in this country has declined drastically.
I was interviewed on RT News in 2011 - Been job hunting since JANUARY 2009. Can't even land a job flipping burgers!!! I can build and repair computers. I can't find ANYTHING - only random $8/h temp gigs here and there, nothing stable - So I'm living in my dad's dining room (since 2010). I'm fixing computers from home to survive, but have to charge $40 for $100+ jobs because everyone is on welfare/under-employed. I can't afford to move anywhere else. I don't know if these people know, but it can help if you dye your hair, lose weight and update your look, this is what companies look at because they want to see if you have the stamina to work. I would advise to also start your own little business and do not depend on any company to give you a job, it actually is risky to depend on someone else. So if you do get another job, save and live below your means and work on your side hustle. :)

The entire American expierence needs a reboot. Kids need to live with their parents longer, the first two years of college - tech school should be free, and unemployment needs to be met with government help and education. We keep trying the same old thing while expecting different results.

Great program. If the government funded programs like this more instead of food stamps, it would actually save money. I also think these type of programs should be implemented earlier. If you can't find a job in 6 - 8 weeks, you should be able to join the program.

It's designed to keep people down. I don't believe that people are in complete control of their lives, they are to a certain point but too many people can decide your fate.

6:00 debilitating fear that I won't be able to take care of myself
Back when I was young I didn't have money for college and my parents weren't able to send me. So, after high school I went in the Army and learned a skill. Left the Army 6 years later with a marketable skill, no debt, nice savings and several years with mid mgmt experience. The skill kept me employed for 42 years making over $100K most of the last 10 years. Never without a job when I wanted one and was able to work around the world as I desired. Never needed or collected unemployment, food stamps or other assistance.
Retired in Europe 4 years ago with a small pension and US Social Security. My monthly living expenses are around 1/3 my SS check and most of my time is spent riding a Harley (purchased new in the US 12 years ago) around southern Europe searching out little known cultures, art, museums, ruins and history. Still only got a high school diploma. And so many of these mega educated unemployed used to look down their noses at people like me.
I have to laugh thiinking about my favorite aunt harassing me on trips back to the US about how smart I was and how I could have really done something with myself if only I had gone to college. i'd laugh answering her with, "Jeez, all I do now is spend half my time flying a helicopter around Europe and the other hald riding a Harley around Europe. Do you realize how many millions of people are sitting in high rise office buildings in cubicles with no windows just wishing they could be me?"
This happened to my husband after 45 years of employment. This has changed our family. Now, the rules for unemployment is I think 6 months. We are trying to sell our house, and need to do this soon as I am the only one working. And yes, I feel ashamed.

When you are out of work, you just have to be persistent to get back on that horse again. It just sucks that some of us have to wait longer than others to get that gig to regain the sense of dignity.

I've been there before, and it is embarrassing going around and around to each and every store, asking someone if they are hiring. You just have to use every practical trick in the book, and then sooner or later something will turn up.

January 2023 - I was laid off along with 30% of the company from a huge home builder. I was an escrow officer. Thankfully I’ve been a licensed cosmetologist for 9 years now. I had a job replacing over 100% of my income within 24 hours. Trades are invaluable.

@@jsmith108 For one thing…..I never gave up. I became the victor rather than the victim. I gained more knowledge, learned new skills and changed my attitude and mindset. I made myself more competitive and marketable. I no longer saw myself as the victim or casualty of a poor economy. It wasn’t my fault. Why take it personally? You have to come to a place where YOU have the power to make the change. Change isn’t pleasant or kind but sometimes it’s the only way to extricate yourself from the BS you’ve created for yourself. We all have the power to start over from scratch and reinvent ourselves to be better. Never give up. Never give in.

I’m sure the upper levels kept their golden parachute.When I retired and wanted to return to the ICU bedside to maintain my RN skills, no takers. My RN pension ,it’s a decent one ,was sustaining me during the years prior to my claiming my Social Security benefits . The pension and Social Security benefits were my golden parachute . I received a dependent benefit as I have a minor child ,in addition to my own benefit . It was literally a game changer for my finances. After I retired from my RN job, as I was being pushed out, I sought part-time work to maintain my intensive care skills ,no takers . Thank God I have a pension that sustained me until the blessing of my Social Security benefits kicked in.

lower your expectations I also have a degree from renowned school and as 28 year old almost ten years of work experience from different places now I am working in restaurant at least I have a job and can pay may bills.Even though I work under less educated and less experienced people than myself but I do not complain and I love my job, it is just life and life is not fair. Take it as it is cause it could have been even worse.
Start as leafblower, end up with your own landscaping company. I started at the bottom, now I run the joint. Don't ever be afraid to fall to the bottom of the heap. Be afraid of staying there.

Job market is really brutal. You have to be a real trooper to get ahead. Work a ton of hours with 2 jobs if necessary. Work work work. If you lose a job get anything you can find and keep moving. If you stop, your a sitting duck.
I am grateful to have a secure job: union, retirement, health insurance I can afford; but these people had "secure jobs" it's hard knowing, when seeing things like this, that my job could disappear, and I work hard to be grateful and not take it for granted.

I became a trucker at 48 and nearly 3 yrs later I've tripled my previous income. I'm the only female on my team, and black female at my company...most of the guys are under 30, and the older guys in their late 40s have trucked over 20 yrs. I live in Atlanta but I transport railroad containers in New Jersey and Chicago. I'm in the top 5 in production. At one point I did try to go back into the "regular" workforce... it was quickly apparent - at 49, I was too old. I feel very blessed that i was able to transition.
I'm considering driving,but I rarely drive a car and never drove a truck. Live in NYC, can move anywhere. I'm not sure if my fear of driving big rigs is psychological or it's just thst I've never done it before. Would appreciate your thoughts. Very happy you're gainfully employee, God bless.

There is young discrimination as well. You aren't take seriously for the serious jobs because of your age. Young people are mainly only really considered for entry to mid-level jobs compared to older applicants who are more senior level.

It could be your occupation is in high demand. I have been out of work first for 8 months, volunteered, then hired for 2 years, then lost a job again, and now I have been out of work for 6 months. I have a college degree. Because I was terminated over simple crap in the past two jobs, it looks like I can't be trusted. I have gotten emails that the job was posted but someone is hired and you fit the requirements but wait for a call for an interview. And older people aren't used to social media.

I got laid off from a major tech company after they announced record profits! 500 of us were given the pink slip that day, and I even had to train my Taiwan replacement before leaving (or else not get the severance package). I have an MS in engineering with 18 years of experience in various roles. I've worked my tail off for my entire career. I'm currently trying to get into a new field that's less "outsource-able" by taking training courses... I hope future employers can see how past experience easily translates to this new field. This new field also suits my strengths. But what everyone tells me is that it is extremely difficult to make a career transition like this while not having a job. But I don't have a ton of other options. It is tough being unemployed... you feel isolated, self esteem takes a hit, it's embarrassing socializing with your friends. I've got a family to support and can't do that. You want to be productive, a valuable member of society, role model for your kids, the husband your wife deserves, but you can't... it's like a downward spiral.

I am so glad that I saw all this coming years ahead. Going to college is just a ticket to be educated and be creative in this real world. Self employment is the only way to go. Find a skill that is demanding and start a business. Save, save, save, get out of debt and invest. It is tough out there people. Jobs don't last that long anymore. I've been self employed since 2006 (at 32 years old) for the last 10 years and on my third business and very satisfied. I get job offers all the time, but will never ask for a job again. +oldschoolguy80s just because you go to college and get a fancy piece of paper dont guarantee squat nowdays, all it guarantees is another bill. Its all who you know and whos ass you kiss to get a job nowdays, if you do neither you are screwed, and to start a business takes something called MONEY!!! And how do you get Money?? Its something called A JOB..HELLO!!!!!!!!
How do you afford the self employment tax that you have to pay annually? A person that makes less than $26,000 per year can wound up with a tax bill of $4,000 to $5,000 per year. The majority of this is the social security tax.

Not everyone is interested in being self-employed and you forget to mention that there are plenty of entrepreneur jobs that do fail for a variety of reasons. Like or not, that's the fact that needs to be addressed more as well. Only a minority of people, including entrepreneurs, are willing to speak that "inconvenient" truth. As, you correctly said, life is tough/cruel and one can expect it to remain so. Are there any solutions for everyone? I don't know and honestly, I don't think so. Just because it worked for you, it won't work for others - others can attest to that.

employers are becoming very-picky, there's a lot of foreigners, etc. No one will give me a chance. Dan Malloy and Michael Bloomberg live in 3 million dollar houses, and there are people who are starving and who can't pay their bills, it's total bullshit!!!!!. I have a 3.7 GPA, a high school Diploma, and I can't get anything.
This sucks. I want to work and no one will hire me and now I have to freaking beg for money.
people who don't speak and understand English can get jobs, but I can't?!, come on. Hire Americans first!!!!! , this country needs to worry about and take care of its own, never mind other places/countries.
