Paul, I'm going to call the old muffler a rice crispie sound. When the engine slows down after a rev up, it snaps, crackles, and pops just like the cereal. haha
I find that in hobbies like this people tend to have a "If you dont know as much as me you shouldn't do it at all" mentality towards younger/newer people in that particular hobby. What they don't realize is that if young people dont get into the hobby ever, the hobby dies out. as a younger person it was nice to see how excited you were that you were reaching a younger audience and continuing the hobby. I already knew you were against gatekeeping from things you've said in your previous videos its good to see that you truley want whats best for the community
Yes! That old attitude is not welcome here. Those people forget they were once newbies themselves! I embrace the new and younger people and tend to irritate the grouchy ones. I am well hated by the gatekeepers, and proud of it. Merry CHRISTmas!!
You are always and forever welcome Paul! I am also glad to have you as my adopted brother, and hope we have many years of memories and shenanigans left!
The Aries muffler has a better sound in this video to my ears Paul. Of course, hearing it in person may be different so I'm not going to stand by that until I hear a back to back comparison in real life. Great video!
Thanks Hal!!
Nothing beats the sound of a running Model A at idle. Paul - Your closing message was very heart warming and has started my day with remembering so many good times and great friends in my life. You and Model T have a Merry Christmas and I look forward to your Model A bucket list for 2024.
This comment had me laughing out loud (LOL) - 0:45 Didn't see or hear that one coming!
Back in the 70's when I was a pre-teen our local Model A club would go across the Appalachian mountains to a local maple sugar festival in the early spring. I absolutely loved the sound of a dozen A's pulling the mountain. No matter the weather I would roll the window down on ours just to listen to them chugging along. I'm sure I drove my parents crazy on the trips that the temperature was only in the 30's! Lol
Merry Christmas to you and Model T!
Merry CHRISTmas!!
Mr Shinn, I think I'm with you on sound (preferring the less expensive). But, I'd like to mention (as you likely know) exhaust systems wear in, so the sound may change over time. It would be interesting to see if this happens over time. More importantly, thank you and have a very Merry Christmas! ~ Chuck
Yep. Agreed. Merry CHRISTmas!!
Gotta disagree with you on one thing. You aren’t making Model A’s cool again. They were always cool.
You've got me there!!
@@ModelA
Thank you Mr shinn. Amazing video.
Paul and Model T....Merry Christmas! I'm a new 28CCPU model A owner, and I'm finding you to be a blessing.....since I know absolutely nothing about these wonderful old cars. Mine runs, but hasn't run for God knows how many years, and needs a few things. Your videos have been a great help to me, and thank you very much for doing them. odie, known as the eccentric old guy on Etsy.
That's cool, and thank you! Merry CHRISTmas!!
Both sounds awesome it's a model a ford
There's a lovely 'tubey-ness' to a Model A that is so distinctive. Thanks to you all for an entertaining and informative year! Happy Christmas, Stefan
Thank you Stefan! Merry CHRISTmas
Merry CHRISTmas!!
Thank you for what you do. I want to personally, well, mostly, blame you for my newfound interest in Model A's. I hope to one day soon find a "basket case" as you poignantly point out from time-to-time. Preferably, I would like to find a four door. I can't afford a running car, plus, I really need a project to keep my mind at ease. As a disabled Veteran (mostly mental). There is something soothing about wrenching and restorative work that soothes the soul. My two young daughter's are even excited about getting one and helping daddy fix it up. Keep up the positive work, both you and the Mrs. Merry Christmas and have a Happy New Year.
That is a great idea. I agree about wrenching soothes the soul. Where are you located? I have 3 basket case fordors that need a new home. Merry CHRISTmas!!
HI!: Those mufflers both sound good to me! Love the sound of a Model A Engine! Thanks to ALL that make this wonderful channel possible! MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL!

Paul and Tina Merry Christmas , 🎅 🎄 Yes I enjoy your eternal positivity and clean dry humor in your outro you thanking all of your friends supporters

Where credit is due, right? Hahaa! Thank you so much. Merry CHRISTmas!!
Thank you again! Only problem is you keep giving me new projects to consider on my '30 A that I thought was finished years ago !Guess that's a good thing. Merry Christmas to you ,Tina and Bob.
Haha! Time to get to work!! Merry CHRISTmas!
What a fun video to watch. Really love the old Ford cars. FYI, I have a 1953 Ford 8N tractor with the inline flathead. So easy to opearate. It's just spark, and gas, that's it. Four plugs, and points, rotor, condenser. I use it every week to mow my 4 acres of grass, and in the wintertime, plow snow with a 6 foot pull behind blade. Cranks right up even in 10 below zero. Spark and gass, and you're good to go. Very predictable to start. No electronics.
Very cool! Those tractors are very similar to these cars too.
I hope you all have a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year
Thank you. Merry CHRISTmas!!
You are right...the Model A Ford did have a unique sound of its own, I've been around for 88 years, and have ridden in quite a few different automobiles from the thirties, forties and fifties, and you know there were several automobiles that also had their own unique sound.......I bought my first car when I turned 16, a 1941 Desoto..then I purchased another car just for the fun of it, a 1928 Model A($50) and had a lot of fun with it for about a month or so , and sold it for more than I paid for it, and used the profit to improve my Desoto. Buicks, Ford V8's , Packards , Chevrolets and one that I can remember were the Kaiser/Fraziers ......Thank you Paul keeping up the interest in the Model A, they are nearly indestructible.
Yep! Thank you Allen!
Always a joy ❤️ to watch your videos. Thank you for all your time and knowledge and your sense of humor 👍. There is a notable difference in the sound, and I also like the sound of the first - cheaper system better. Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas and blessings in the new year ⭐️
Thanks for sharing!! Merry CHRISTmas
It's people like Bob that have the knowledge that were willing to share their experience with a young man like you! You are the GURU of the Model A! Merry Christmas to you and Model "T"! Look forward to more videos in 2024!
Gracias Eloso! Bob is like having a Model A Google in the flesh. Merry CHRISTmas!!
@@ModelA You too! Look forward to more content in 2024.
Well done comparison of the Aries vs. the "cheap" muffler. One thing you didn't mention, that I've found, is that my Model A with an Aries muffler has better power than with the cheap muffler.
I failed to mention this in my comment below, yes there seems to be more power and quicker acceleration along with putting in a flame thrower coil with correct timing, there is a remarkable difference.
I didn't notice any difference in power. Roadie will still snap your neck and go! Merry CHRISTmas
Thank you, Paul. For some time now I haven't had enough time for videos. It's good coming back to your wonderful presentations, something like coming home in a way.
I recall a couple/few years back that none of the Model A channels (that I knew of) had given much thought to Model A mufflers. I'd sent-in a written inquiry regarding details on the Model A mufflers for an upcoming Q and A sessions that you and Mr. Guimarin were doing at the time. Though my inquiry was answered, neither of you had much to say on the matter.
Today, I was delighted in finding this "Best Sounding..." video here. And I'm glad that you've moved toward research and results regarding these very unique mufflers.
The basis of my interest has always been "What is the source of their wonderful sound?"
I'd like to hear more about them from you or an expert such as Mr. Guimarin. Perhaps an internal investigation, and if the original mufflers were made of Vanadium Steel, that sort of thing. And anything else you might be willing to offer. God Bless, You and Model T.
Whassup, DM?!!! I hope you are well. The sound is a combination of flathead, low compression, long stroke, tapered muffler, low RPMs.
I agree I like the sound of the cheap muffler better. You and model T have a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year.
Paul, you're a class act.
Merry CHRISTmas John!
Not a Model A guy , (just a passing appreciation; a museum I work with has one in their collection) but I had a couple thoughts. It’s interesting that you say the Aires muffler is much quieter, but the db meter shows almost the same levels on both mufflers when idling and revving. I believe the cheaper one did have a more peaks in the higher frequencies which tend to sound louder to humans. Another observation: I imagine over years and years of people driving A’s and when good aftermarket parts might not have been available, cheap muffler-shop exhausts probably were more common than original ones. So that’s what people have come to know as the Model A sound and the correct exhaust doesn’t sound like we expect an A to sound, so it sounds “wrong “ and we like it less. Just some musings. Great video.
Very keen observation! Yes, you are correct. The Aries muffler gets rid of all the high end sound that makes the cheaper one sound louder to the ear. That's what I was trying to show that I just can't put into words, so that's why I used the sound app and showed it.
When I changed my exhaust manifold I tried ever whichaway to get the flange of my original down pipe to line up! I gave up and went to my local Exhaust shop they failed too, much to my surprise! So I resorted to going to a Exhaust fabricator who made up a stainless steel down pipe that they welded into the stock muffler! Perfect!
Good thinking. Merry CHRISTmas!
Great Video Paul! Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and Tina. I would like to mention that the car also has more horsepower with the Aries muffler!
I haven't noticed a difference in power. Roadie has always been kinda peppy. Merry CHRISTmas!!
Dear Friends Paul & Tina I feel so lucky to be part of this family and a friend of this channel. I wish you both Happy Holidays and a healthy New Year. I am now in my 83rd year and have slowed down quite a bit. I am still hoping to meet you both in person one day. Your Friend Carmen
You are a valued part of our family, Carmen!
No, the black painted exhaust in your hand is mandrel bent, mandrel bending is draw forming while there's typically something inside holding the inside shape so it doesn't deform while it's being bent.... the uncoated mild steel one you have there is just bent on a pipe bender/tubing roller..... mandrel bending is good, what you actually want..... well, unless you're doing pie cuts, which are always preferred lol (for appearance, not for flow)
Yes. I mis-spoke.
Thanks Paul for another year of great content. Although I’ll probably never have a model A of my own, it’s cool to live vicariously through the channel.
That works too! Merry CHRISTmas!!
I wanted a model A, but opted for an 80's Honda Cruiser motorcycle instead.
Faster, funer, higher mpg, sounds good, easy to work on too, a fraction of the price of a Model A, and I get those sexy spoked wheels... too.
Which is what I really wanted.
My dad had a 29 with a rumble seat. My mom had to help push start it a couple times when they were dating :). He got it from a farmer who had it up on blocks in a barn. Smooth talked him out of it. Drove it around when he was in college. College sweethearts, they married. He was drafted and oddly ended up in Europe during the Korean war. His younger brother borrowed the car and left it on the side of a road, abandoned far from home, much to my dad's chagrin! For all I know you may have his old car :).
Wouldn't that be bizarre?? I wonder if we could tell..
Paul, it is in your best interest to research how bad Fram oil filters are. Fram is all I used until I saw many tear down and comparison videos.
Steven you are spot on, unfortunately for Fram that is ........I started selling automotive parts in 1955, and the company I worked for in Tucson, carried Fram oil filers....they were considered the premier filter . Later on in 1963, I was purchasing agent for a large automotive warehouse distributor in Los Angeles, and we sold Fram exclusively, still they were considered to be a premier fliter.....then in about 1980 a salesman from Wix came to see me .....he had me pull a Fram spin on from the shelf (Ph8) if memory serves me right, and he had the equivalent filers in other brands as well..Purolator, Hastings, AC and even an STP .......when he cut them open for comparison.....I couldn't believe my eyes.....it was a real eye opener......a few weeks later we had massive change over to the Wix filters in all three of our warehouses.......I've been retired from the automotive parts business now for 32 years, but still will only use a Wix filter on my automobile....sorry to take up so much space on my reply, but your comment on Fram pushed my memory button..and Paul, he's correct, believe me.
Well said
I like the sound of the new one much better. Thanks for the video Paul, God bless and Merry Christmas to both of you!
Cool. Merry CHRISTmas!!
What a difference in sound. Very nice. Tina won't be exhausted listening to the old exhaust. Lol. It does sound like you put a bunch of expensive components on the exhaust how good it sounds. You never go el cheapo on anything you do. The sky's the limit. God Bless you guys. Have a great Christmas and a great new years. You guys are amazing. Happy for your new position in the model a panel. Do you think you would do an interior replacement video. Like seats. Carpet. Headliner. Side panels. Etc. Just curious.
Thanks! I do try to save money when possible. I am not a wealthy man. I will be doing a full interior on the pickup truck next year.
Wish my rear clamp went on that simple. Had to brake a sweat to get it installed. Absolutely best muffler going g. I hope you all have a great Christmas and an awesome new year. God bless our country. Thx
Thanks for this! It would be educational to have a couple of "fly by" videos taken from the roadside while you drive past at, say, 40mph. The exhaust note is different under load, compared to revving with no load, and hopefully we're spending more time driving than sitting and revving.
Do you know anything about the innards of those mufflers? I suspect that the quieter, more expensive one may have some fiberglass packing, which does wonders for reducing harsh, high-frequency sound waves and producing a deep mellow exhaust note.
Again, thanks!
I have seen the inside of both. No fiberglass, just pipes with holes in them and baffles..
I like that the flared end on the expensive muffler system is done right if you had the right tools I'm sure you could rework the less expensive one. I like the sound of the expensive one. Merry Christmas to you and your.
Thanks John. Merry CHRISTmas!!
Another great informative video. I wonder though, the sound of the new one might need a bit of break-in and the sound might be more to your liking. Merry Christmas to you and Tina and everyone watching.
Could be. Thank you and Merry CHRISTmas!!
Paul, At my 71 years of age and been in the mechanical field thru my whole life I am agree hundred percent about the sound, the cheaper one sound better but the more expensive is far more quiet, merry Christmas, blessings to you and your love ones, most kind of you for sharing your impecable videos with us, even that I spent my entire life in the mechanical field, I am on diapers compare with you on Ford model A, please keep up the good work, from the endless summer paradise Puerto Rico Jesus Torres.

I noticed in you thanks part of the video you listed Derek from VGG and I am not surprised. He is such a nice guy I got to meet him and Jessica at the Gainesville Raceway in Gainesville Florida. He was super busy but took the time to take a picture with me.
Excellent! I worked with him on an episode of Roadworthy Rescues. We went through heck and back getting that car going! Then we explored around Detroit and toured the remains of the old Ford plant at Highland Park. I spent about a week with him. Very memorable!
I agree Paul, the cheapy sounds more model A-ish....Thanks for doing what you do for us!

Mery Christmas to you and Model T Paul.
About 7 months ago I put a new Aries on my "31 Coupe and feel the Aries is way better when using engine compression to decelerate before applying brakes or going downhill. There is no popping at all, as there is much less restriction over the cheaper repro's. You get what you pay for in this case.
At idle, sure at first the Aries was throatier ,a little more baritone (to me), but that has gone away over 1,200 miles of use, and really sounds good at full retard idle.
Take care, keep up the good work, hope to meet you in Ruidoso next year!
Thanks. Yep, see you in Ruidoso. Merry CHRISTmas!!

I miss working on such simple exaust systems ,nicely done sir, the oe exaust were mandrel bent vs a simple exaust shop machine bent ,and the front flange was made wrong due to human error not having enough pipe in the die , keep up the good videos please :)

Merry CHRISTmas, Matt!
Merry CHRISTmas Matt!
I have to say Paul, that I prefer the sound of the more expensive muffler. And I would not say it is quieter then the cheap muffler, but I would say it has a lower rumble to it that sounds similar to an old John Deere tractor. That’s not saying that Tina’s car sounds like a tractor, but it has that lower tone of an old 4 cylinder tractor kind of like an old 4 cylinder Ford tractor or John Deere tractor. But then again some of those old model A and model T’s got turned into tractors.
I know exactly what you mean. Yep, you're right!
Great info...and a Merry Christmas to to all !
A fundamental four cycle ( granny ) cam is the dominant characteristic of the exhaust sound. I'd do it in 1 n 1/2 inch dairy stainless with a tractor muffler. No fuss no muss. That belly needs a big wirebrushing, painting, and undercoat.
Yep. See previous videos on this car. The underneath will be getting attention.
What I thought of when you said you're in control of the vehicle (and those who find that too difficult) is the idea that we don't engage anymore. Engaging takes effort and at times risk.
Agreed
The Yoko comment earns a fave and a watch. :D
Haha! Thanks!!!
Great video Paul. I would have liked to see how much noise came out with no muffler :) So we could see how good both of these mufflers were. Just a thought. Hope you and Model T have a great and blessed Christmas and a wonderful time with family. God bless your weekend!
I did that in one of the Gandalf videos and on the Vice Grip Garage collab on Roadworthy Rescues TV show. Hearing protection required! Merry CHRISTmas!!
The Model A idling is one of the sweetest sounds I know.
Absolutely!!!

I like the sound of both of the exhaust systems. But leaning towards the more expensive because of better fit.
Yep. I agree
Great job, Paul. Keeping it simple is the way to go. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you and your family. Take care, Mike.
Agreed! Merry CHRISTmas!
Howdy my grandpa was jay pearcy. He won the Henry ford award with his 1930 model a rumble seat. He passed away a few years ago and the car has sat. I’m familiar with working on motorcycles. What would be the best way about getting it roadworthy again?
I had to put a muffler on my 1999 Ford Ranger and the stock OEM muffler was nearly $200 - too much for a $500 junkyard built pickup. So I put the modern version of the classic Cherry Bomb glaspack. Quiet normally but roars when needed. Could Not ask for better.
Nice
You put the clamp on the top of the bottom frame rail. I just tried that with same muffler and clamp and the exhaust flange is tilted on the manifold so I moved it to bottom and flipped clamp which is how it was with previous muffler and clamp.
The way I did it is how they did it at the factory. Otherwise, the tailpipe is too low.
I agree with you Paul
The sound of the model A is unique !
Absolutely!
Model A’s are right up there in the top sounding cars for me. Have you ever head the exhaust on anything other than a Model A?
Yes. Nothing compares/ Merry CHRISTmas!!
Thank you so much Paul and Tina for everything you do. Merry Christmas.
Thank you Craig! Merry CHRISTmas
Thank you Paul. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and Tina. God bless you.
Thank you Bob, Merry CHRISTmas!!
When you were revving the engine with the cheep muffler, when it was decelerating it was popping quit allot. With the better muffler it didn't seem to do that... Maybe it has a little more back pressure, I think that's probably better for the engine and exhaust.
I think it was because of the lousy flange allowing cold air into the muffler.
@@ModelA Well now we have to see what the other one sounds like with the good flange.....
Merry Christmas Paul and Tina. Looking forward to more of your videos and those of Model T's.

Nice video, Merry Christmas to all of you and thank you for sharing your experience with us.
You said the less costly exhaust is mandrel bent. It isn’t. The expensive one is. Mandrel bending ensures the pipe diameter stays consistent throughout all bends. The cheaper one is a conventional bend which crimps the diameter down as the pipe is bent.
I know. I have been getting flak for that slip over and over. Thank you. I knew what I meant, but it didn't come out right when delivering on camera.

Hi Paul! Happy holidays to you and Model T! Question, Easier to work on, a Model A or the VW Bug? Capt. Mikey.
I used to have a 1960 356B Porsche which as you know is very similar to a VW Beetle, and both the Model A and the Boxer engine is a good car to work on.
I have only worked one VW, but hundreds of Model As. Very similar experience, but the Model A just feels easier to me. I could be wrong. Merry CHRISTmas!!
Well, I thought I wanted a '57 Tbird when I retire, but maybe I want a good ol' Model A. 🤔😄 There is something very cool and relatable about "analog" technology that humans built way before all the bits and bytes and AI stifled most other forms of creativity and innovation.

Love that Boots Randolfe theme.
What do you think of the newer looking distributors and are they dependable? and what exactly did you mean when you said things would’ve been different if you had a model a in high school?
I prefer the original style distributors. I mean things would have turned out different.

Original. I don't have any burtz blocks.
