Paul Shinn = absolute legend. Wife and I made a 4 day trip in a Model A last fall and it was so much fun! We did about 800 miles and did an oil change in an O'reilly parking lot in the rain. We took all the back roads, nice and easy, minimal highway driving. She planned the route and found a bunch of historical stuff, roadside attractions etc. We stayed in an old hotel where Bonnie & Clyde hung out back in the day. Watching Derek struggle with the gas bowl or whatever you call that glass thing with the cork seal he had to make, it reminds me of how difficult such a simple thing would be for me, only I’d be using every curse word in the book and having an absolutely miserable time, questioning why I’m so stupid and everything is so hard for me. Australia here Derek.! When you left the first shop chuggin on down the road with the banjo music playing. All you needed was a bed and an old rockin chair ontop, and it would have looked like a scene from the Beverly hillbillies..!!! This one brought back memories Derek, i'm 74 and my dad had one of these. Yes.! we had them in Australia, in fact even today there are model A clubs in various states of Australia. A guy needs to listen to what this guy who is a respiratory therapist has to say. You are taking in a lot of mold, mildew and other nasties in those lungs of yours. A guy needs to start taking precautions with these old rigs. Lung infections and fungi are not fun to deal with. They can really make a guy VERY SICK for a long time. Sorry it didn't work out for you Derek. My Dad just passed about 8 months ago, and we have been getting his 1931 Model A fixed up and ready for sale. It's not an easy thing to pull of for most people without it sounding contrived. You do it effortlessly and it sincerely sounds like someone having a conversation with another person. @speedfreak8200 Yep. There's days that I don't feel like cleaning up cars and dragging them to car shows, but I'm always glad that I did at the end of the day. I've won trophies on some of the days that I've felt the worst doing it. If I had said "fuck it" and stayed in bed, I wouldn't have those trophies. Gotta keep on keepin on, or a guy gets old... 🤷🏻
When I was in high school our family bought a house that used to have a fuel station in the front yard back in the days of the Model A's. when we removed all the stuff they had left behind, out around a tulip tree were 6 of 7 of these old engines just laying around it. they were scrapped... this was in 1978. years later My step dad and the neighbor got into restoring these old cars, all the car parts and such we threw out was the topic of many discussions... lol Great video, thanks for sharing!
My pop bought one of these in the early 1930’s for $5. It was his first car and had no breaks, lights, starter battery, etc…..but it ran good and it got him all over New York City and the surrounding area. What a great car.

Gotta tell you I channeled you today while doing brake work. A friend "helping" me cross threaded a fitting in my proportioning valve. I tried several times to fix it before pulling it and retapping the threads. Upon putting it back together I couldn't get the fitting to seat without the flare wrench slipping. I then said I know a guy that knows how to fix it and I grabbed the vice grips. Never fails.
Derek, just a small tip. Cut little strips of sandpaper and keep them in the file side of your Leatherman. When you work on anything with points, you got sandpaper available 👍

Put a rebuilt Zenith carb & distributor on it & try again. Also, pull manifold, clean up surfaces & put in new gaskets. Derek, I doubt you’ll see this, but I just wanted to say that I really enjoy any episodes you do involving Model As and cars of that time period. My grandpa was a big fan of your channel and was always telling me about his favorite channel on his iPad. He was an avid model A collector and member of the model A collectors club. Sadly he passed away about 3 weeks before the 1928 Model A you did back in 2022, so he never got to enjoy you working on the cars he loved the most. Seeing this 1930 brings back many memories of him, as his first car was a 1931 four door that my grandma still has.

That was the right move Derek. I know you live to drive 700 miles on 40 quarts of oil, but not today. I did enjoy the road trip footage getting to your buddies place. I'll just rewind that a bunch of times and call it 700 miles. Thanks for taking me along. I always enjoy!
In all the years of watching this channel I can only recall a few times where you had to throw in the towel. You still have a pretty good success rate. Hopefully the new ride gets you back home.
The trick with the metal rod against the block took me back to being a kid. My grandfather had a machinist friend that made him a screwdriver that was over 3 feet long and I remember him doing the same thing with that. He sure was a great mechanic.
Stopping by to make sure and like and comment for the algorithm along with watching from beginning to end especially because I saw some guy complaining about you rescuing this one on Facebook. This is your channel, keep doing you. Thanks for taking us along.
My Dad Had a 32 with The Flathead V8. He said the starter died and could not afford to replace it so He would Jack the left rear wheel up off the ground and spin start it.
You can't win them all but I'm glad you tried. I know you do a lot of revivals, but its the road trips and problem solving along the way that really make you so captivating. Even if you just bought a running and driving squarebody and road tripped it home the way you do. If its a gem and doesn't throw you curveballs, you could always stop and do a parking lot oil change.
Derek, what you may not know about Model A's is, that when the gearshift is in 3rd gear, you can grab the gearshift with both hands and pull straight up. You will feel it notch in a knuckle that allows the gearshift to be now swung up and away towards the passenger side, against the dashboard. This was to allow more room for the middle passenger in the front on longer drives. It was a standard feature. And yes that temp gauge on the rad cap does work, and the red mercury can be seen by the driver in the danger zone. The ones with screw caps could be turned towards the driver.

Actually, the first time I saw any of your videos, I thought to myself, not my type of video. Then your channel showed up again, and I was hooked. Now, after hundreds of videos. I look up VGG and South Main Auto. You remind me of how my life was growing up helping my dad at his shop. This video hit home when I was ten a neighbor came to me and asked if I could help him start a Model A it was so cool that afternoon when it started and we went for a ride. Derrick, congratulations on your 2 million subscribers. I was really hoping to watch your ride back home. Thank you, your boys and Jessica. It's got too hard for them to be gone for the videos. Just for future reference Derek, $5.99 at Tractor Supply you can get a universal sediment bowl gasket/screen kit. If it works for all tractors it has to work for a Model T 😂
As a 30 year Model A owner, I appreciate you and Paul Shinn for making Model A's cool again. They can be easily toured if they are in good mechanical condition. Went on a tour to the Gilmore Museum in Michigan for Model A days. We covered over 100 miles. It's a great way to see back roads and scenery that you miss being on highways/Interstates.

Derek, First off, your vids are pretty sweet. I'm always happy when I open TH-cam and see the notification for new content. That being said: your "Will it Run" videos are hands down my favorite, but you're giving away the "Will it Run" part in the intro. Several recent videos show a quick clip of the car driving down the road within the first 15 seconds. I understand there's calamities along the way, but it's a HUGE spoiler. OK! Loved the Model A sedan! Back in 1964 my uncle gave me a 1929 A Coupe as grad present. It was rough. Sat on trailer for a year without getting any better. Then Glenn Pray (Tulsan, of Cord 810 fame) decided to go into the 'A' business. He bought about 300 in various states of repair, was going to use his factory in Broken Arrow, OK to restore them to a point where you could at least have a fairly complete one to rebuild. He bought mine, I wanted to see it get better treatment. His car empire collapsed, and everything was sold off. About 2-3 years later I noticed my neighbor with a '29 Coupe, obviously being worked on, but running. We compared notes, and it was my old car! (and it never ran for me). He moved away, so I never got to follow up on it. Fantastic, solid, basic cars. Wish we had more..... (neighbor told me that enigine was rusted up, but lots of kerosene and Marvel Mystery Oil -don't know what's in it, it's a mystery - finally brought it back to a useful state)
Dude bro, I absolutely love all you and your "Little Grip" guy do for our viewing pleasure. I've never had anything bad to say to you or I would (note: of all the channels I watch & love, yours is the ONLY channel I subscribe-to). Not going to today, either. Would like to mention that you consider going back to doing these by yourself and/or when you bring your wife, little guy, or buddy along to help video. Nothing bad about the professional crew, they did an awesome job...it just lost a tiny bit of your special magic having them do so much of the work for you. I'm torn about this because you definitely deserve a hand with all you do. Something to ponder.
8:14 Babbitt bearings are a bonus today tho. You can easily repour them even yourself, you don't need to be a specialist (follow Keith Rucker's videos on it). Imagine it this were like an older Caterpillar where you cannot find proper caged bearings anymore so you have to hope you find NOS. Babbitt bearings? Buy the ingots, smoke the shaft, build up the dam, melt the Babbitt, pour it, and Bob's your uncle. It really is that simple. I poured my first one after seeing Keith's videos and i got it right on the first try with no prior experience and a thin wash of mechanical knowledge. It really is, that simple.
Thankfully my 31 plymouth and 31 Franklin have modern bearings and even hydraulic brakes. Chrysler was so far ahead of Ford in the 20's and 30's. Then came the V8. But that air cooled straight 6 at 100 HP could outrun a V8 all day and never overheat. they can't. Made to run on 20 SAE at 255-265 degree's all week long

This one brought back memories Derek, i'm 74 and my dad had one of these. Yes.! we had them in Australia, in fact even today there are model A clubs in various states of Australia. First thing caught my eye at the start was the original klaxon horn. Good thing you understand a lot of the doo dabbers on these old cars. Thanks for what you do Derek, you give us fella's and fellete's a lot of enjoyment watching you do what you do.
I was in Perth, WA in 1982. The US Navy was some good times.
The model A was absolutely everywhere. They even built them under license in Russia as the GAZ model AA. Us in Finland made tractors out of a lot of them 😄 (from Fords, not GAZ's)
Leave Derek alone if you can't be nice don't say anything

I immediately like VGG and ColdWarMotors every time before watching. Best stuff for learning, laughing, and relaxing!
If a guy needs to take a break for his health, he needs to do that. A guy has a Jessica and three little humans that he needs to look after and a guy's health is very important.

Sorry it didn't work out for you Derek. My Dad just passed about 8 months ago, and we have been getting his 1931 Model A fixed up and ready for sale. He traded his old 31 that had 6V system for another 31 that was converted to a 12V system. Runs like a top. You brought back the memories I had with him working on them. Thanks for that. I love it when you carry on conversations with yourself. I don't know why but it is hilarious. I literally laugh out loud. It's not an easy thing to pull of for most people without it sounding contrived. You do it effortlessly and it sincerely sounds like someone having a conversation with another person.

9N, 2N, 8N, and Jubilees, NAA Ford tractors do the same thing for easy mounting the tractor seat.

Totally enjoyed this one Derek. Heck I enjoy all of em. Now going to see about that 16hp motor your beloved Son got his hands on.
(neighbor told me that enigine was rusted up, but lots of kerosene and Marvel Mystery Oil -don't know what's in it, it's a mystery - finally brought it back to a useful state)
Best ever way to pass the time sitting at a toyota dealership waiting for a recall job to be completed!
