    This is the final installment of the transmission swap in my 2000 Chevrolet Silverado I call the UglyTruck. It's not much to look at, and when I bought it, the original 4L60e was blown and needed to be rebuilt. Rather than mess around with the stock transmission, I wanted to upgrade to something that can hold a ton more power, so the 4l60 came out, and a junkyard 4l80 went in. My other two videos I show the beginning steps of the process which include removing the 4l60 and installing the 4l80 onto the 5.3 LS with a crankshaft spacer and flat flexplate which I got at the junkyard along with the transmission. I had to modify the crossmember to make it fit, and then extend the cooler lines, and today we handled the tuning, the segment swap of the transmission, and of course the ever important test drive.
    Everything went smoothly for the most part, except now it is a bit slower on take off, even though I put in a higher stall speed torque converter. Right now the truck has 3.42 gears in the rear 10 bolt, but I do want to change em out for 4.11, 4.30, or even 4.56 depending on what size tire I go with. Stay tuned for more progress on the UglyTruck!

    It's good to have the truck up and running for the first time since I've owned it. While I do love the 4L80e for its strength, I now need to re-gear to help the truck get off the line a bit quicker.

      It's sure is cool that y'all address this, I did a lot of research on getting my gear ratio right for my lifted OSB with 4l60e and 35-37 tires, have 488 and its perfect, The hard part was the research and doing all the math to modify my own speed sensor by soldering on a dip switch and figuring out the binary code, my problem is the now is it's old and soft, I would like to upgrade but I live in BFNW with no tuners around and I'm computer illiterate, But you guys just save me a big headache and big bucks and going back to a big sluggish turd.

      you can re-use your existing transfer case, but you will have to take it apart and swap the input shaft of the transfer case to the larger 32 spline. Your existing driveshaft slip yoke will still work, but not sure if there will be a length difference or not on a 4x4.

    I scooped up a 4l80e from a local pick and pull but not sure about going through with it. I’ve thought about just picking up another 4l60e.
    Would it be drivable with the stock 4l80e converter or would an aftermarket even really help due to the 4l80e 1st gear gearing and the 5.3 lack of power. What stall would you get if you think a converter would help much being stock no cam etc.

      no, on a 2wd like this the case lengths are so close, the stock length driveshaft worked, and still had plenty of room on the slip yoke for movement at well. I think maybe on a 4x4 swap it might be difference because of the 4wd tail housing, but not positive.

      Buy a driveshaft from a hd truck. Make sure the hd truck you get the driveshaft from is the same length as your truck. Then purchase a ujoint 1-1/16 diameter to go into your rear differential, the other side of the ujoint has to be 1-3/16 diameter, this side will mount onto the rear of hd driveshaft. This is the most inexpensive way of doing it. Less than $100.

    I have a 6.0 with a 4l80 and love it I had it tuned but I guess he put a race tune in it and it hold the gears a little long and sometimes struggle to go into over drive and when it does go in it come out within 5 minutes I though about buy a stock ecm and putting the shift back to normal what should I do

    • @LawrenceTolman

      no need to change the computer, it just needs to have the shift points corrected by a competent tuner.

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      it would be easiest to grab one from the same year truck, but any will work. I found one from a 6.0 truck and grabbed the flexplate and spacer so it was a direct bolt on to the 5.3

    Thoughts on a 4WD? I just burned up my 4L60e and I'd like to turbo my 5.3 eventually, so the 4L80e is a strong consideration. Thanks for the video! I'm wondering if I'd need a new/custom shaft from my transfer case?

    hi LT first off great show, I saw the show about the swap and after burning 3 4L60s I decided to go 4L80. I'm by no means a mechanic< but thanks to you and TH-cam, I got the mechanical part of the swap done. but I've been stuck for months on the electric part. I get 2 codes, one for the shift solenoids and the other for the TTC solenoid. is that common? thanks Bud.

      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hmm… did you have the computer tuned with a segment swap for the 4l80? If yes, than likely your issue is with the wiring

    Thank you for the informative video. I purchased a 4l80e with a 5.3 mounted on in. Installed it without taking it apart in my 2000 suburban. Truck drives great except it has low torque/ low power? Could this be from needing a tune? Or could it be possible it has a wrong torque converter? Any leads or help would be greatly appreciated.

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm guessing it was originally a 4L60e truck, did you change the wiring around and to the tune for the 4l80? It has different internal electronics that require a segment swap in the computer to handle the different polarity on the solenoids or whatever is different.

    • @hitmanshadowrecon9017

      @@LawrenceTolman yes it had a 5.3 with a 4l60e. Pulled them both out and installed the new 5.3 and 4l80e. I used the 5.3 wiring harness and used a 4l80e adapter. I did not do a tune, but is on the list of things to do. I noticed when I drive in reverse it picks up speed like normal. If I put it in drive it will barely make it up a hill.

    I’m swapping out my 4l60 w a 4l80 as well, but a bit confused on the drive shaft length. So all I need to change is the yoke? Also do I need to change input shaft or add transfer case adapter? Or is that only for 4x4 (my truck is a 04 Silverado 2wd crew cab)

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      if you have a 2wd truck, then yes, all you need to do is swap the yoke on the driveshaft. The stock length will work. If you have a 4x4, then you need to swap out the transfer case input shaft and have the driveshaft lengths changed...

      i think the challenges there are the driveshafts both front and rear will have to be shortened/lengthened, and you'll need to swap to a 32 spline input shaft in the transfer case. otherwise, most of the changes will be the same

    • @LawrenceTolman
      @LawrenceTolman  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      yes, you have to tune the computer to work with the 4l80 vs the 60. It will not work right. If you have HP Tuners, look into a segment swap. basically, you need to change the transmission segment of the tune with one from a factory application, like a 2500HD gasser with an 80e. Then, tweak the shift points, tire size, gear ratio, and so on to match your application.
