I am Polish and some time ago I dated a Russian guy. Once we met in the pub. He was waiting for me and drinking something in a glass. It looked like water. I asked him why was he drinking only water? He replied, "It's not water". He was basically drinking vodka in a glass. Just like water. I was stunned.
I'll tell you a better story. I worked on the construction of roads in Poland (I'm Polish). The rule was always the same, a new employee had to buy vodka and drink it with employees who worked longer hours. I bought 700 ml of pure vodka, drank maybe 40 ml from the bottle and gave the bottle to an excavator operator named Piotrek, he drank it all in one sip as if he was drinking water after a marathon. . The rest of the employees who worked longer told me that you shouldn't give Piotrek the whole bottle, because he will only drink as much as you give him :). After living in Poland for over 36 years, I was surprised for the first time.
I am Russian. Russian Standart is not actually the vodka I would choose: it is overpriced and not really good. We prefer local producers to mass products. One of the best vodkas is "Chistye Rosy" (Чистые Росы). It is much tastier than Russian Standart. Even the cheeper type of vodka from the same plant which Chistye Rosy is from is better than Russian Standart: "Derevyen'ka" for instance (Деревенька). Moreover Poland and Russia have different traditions of making and consuming vodka. 38% - is chosen mostly for chemical reasons (the configuration of water and alcohol molecules due to weak hydrogen connections), but due to the evaporation of the spirits during the process of bottling the level is increased to 40%. Moreover during the distillation process the 40% is really easy to measure: you simply burn the spirits in a glass and it should reduce in half by volume (it happens at alcohol content around 40%). Such distillate is called "Polugar" (Полугар) (or half burned). Money is also a reason, but far not the main.
You can find Polish and Russian vodkas that you personally like or dislike. It's rather about the producent. Although i'm certain about one thing, you will find your favorite one in Poland or Russia ;) Great video anyway! Pozdrawiam braci z Rosji :)
Fun fact: The thing with hitting the bottom of a bottle before opening came from the old days, when bottles were closed with cork and hitting the bottom with hand/elbow made it easier to open
For me both Russian Standart and the Polish Wyborowa are top vodkas. Both taste pretty good but Standart has overall more 'oompf' whereas I like the smoothness and overall taste of Wyborowa a little bit more :)
Every cold vodka taste good. Hiting botom of vodka in Poland was fameous in Komi time becouse the vodka after WWII in Poland was with cork not cap. 38,5% of alkohol in vodka that's becouse they want more money from us and the price is the same like for 40%.
You must try Biały Bocian vodka, in my opinion the best cheap vodka in Poland now but if you want to try something special Starka from Stettin Polmos is realy delicious but very expensive. The most expensive costs 4,000 £, but you can get 18yo for about 80.
3:43 actually it should be served or tasting with room temperature to find taste attributes :D otherwise you can buy the cheapest vodka, freeze it and it will tase very similarly to the most expensive one!
The main issue with this tasting is that it's not a blind tasting. The only way to accurately judge is to not know which one you're tasting and not be swayed by the bottle, label, country of origin, politics, etc.
In same price with Standard i prefer Tsarskaya Gold (Царская золотая). It have most clear taste. Beluga is ok, but thats high price class. And in that class you already can pick some good rum.
One of the main differences is that most Polish vodka is made from rye. Potatoes would probably be the second most popular base material. In Russia, the vast majority of vodka is made from wheat. Occasionally wheat and rye will be used together, but wheat alone is definitely predominant.
I'd translate it as "choicest". It keeps the "choice" root word ("wybór"), but also conveys the actual meaning - one's "top choice", something fine, exquisite.
One of my favorite vodkas was Russian Green Mark vodka. It was very smooth and you could keep it in the freezer and it wouldn't freeze which is a sign of a good vodka .
Correct. It GENERALLY should be chilled, but not freezing cold. The point however is that you take a bottle of vodka out for a longer drinking session and if it's taken out of a freezer, it will start passing through the right temperature range in like 15 or 20 minutes (depending on the room temperature where you're at), and it will stay within that range for a while before it gets too warm again. But if it's only chilled to begin with, you'd have to keep it in an ice bucket. So it's just convenience. But yes, straight out of freezer is not the optimal temperature.
Polish is original, but so is Russian. After all, both countries contributed equally to the invention of this drink across centuries. It cannot be pinned down to one country.
@@vza2772 But still, it was a crudely made spirit out of wine freezing, uses in medical purposes, or something of similar composition, far from what today vodka is. Our modern vodka was not produced until the XIX century thanks to the, then, new distillation apparatus, etc. Basically, this just shows, that the invention of vodka is a really broad and grey area, spanning centuries and across regions, between cultures (they're even Italian monks or Arabic traders playing a big part here) so it's very difficult to pinpoint the invention of this drink to one country. Poland was undoubtedly, historically, one of the biggest players here, but other cultures and nations have had their part in it's invention and improvement as well, and so they deserve some credit too.
