  • In the first of The China-Russia Conversations, Sergey Radchenko, Johns Hopkins School of Advanced International Studies and Asia Society’s Philipp Ivanov discuss the recent history of the China-Russia relationship, what brings Moscow and Beijing together and drives them apart and if the world is on the verge of the Cold War 2.0.

I suggest Professor Radchenko visit Xinjiang for a status update. The destabilization promoted by the USA (see CIA, NED, et al) failed, and the economic and social development of the region has led to peace and prosperity to a point I can honestly say the separatist movement has failed, and civil society has succeeded. He seems to be an objective and fact oriented thinker, so I do suggest he get an update on the facts.

Why would the CIA want to sabotage a country where American businesses have invested heavily in? Wouldn't that be equivalent to shooting self on the foot? Something doesn't sound right with this argument.

The US has 800+ military bases around the world. China has only 1. It is the US we should be worried about. The US has been at war 93% of the time - 227 out of 245 years - since its founding in 1776. i.e. the U.S. has only been at peace for less than 20 years total since its birth.
History teaches us lessons about how it’s easier to blame others than blame ourselves.
The greatest danger we face today is not coming from China and Russia, but the US.

In the grand strategy of a chess game, the Soviet Union lost its king. Now that Europe and the US have driven a predominantly European-facing Russia towards China, this half-baked cold (containment) war now sees China and Russia consolidate with the Global South (through effective institutions such as the BRI, BRICS, SCO, banks and so on, such that the West will suffer rather than Russia or China. The question is when is the pain too great to bear and the gears began to change.

Improving the lives of their population, building up infrastructure, education, health care, increasing their life expectancy.
American leaders only concern is imposing, expanding and retaining American hegemony and domination around the world to the neglect of their own people, national debt and crumbling infrastructure.
These people sent what was the equivalent of the entire Gross Domestic Product of the state of Mississippi to Ukraine help nazis to fight Russians.
However they only sent one time payment of $700 per family to the People of Maui after half of Hawaii bruned to the ground and thousands of people lost their homes and livelihoods.
They did the same thing when the Hurricane destroyed New Orleans and Puerto Rico.

Radchenko answered: Russia permanent decline, really, I am not so sure. I would say Russia needs a lot of hard work, luck, and time on its side to climb back to position of power comparable to its hay day the Soviet Union. I would not give up on Russia as YET.
Interviewer asked this: Both parties would avoid a full out war that is between Russia and China today. This is really a silly question asking today. The answer is very good.
Radchenko claims he himself is a Liberal, my comment Russia, Putin and his leadership team DO Not see themselves holding up liberal values in fact strongly rejecting them, just because of that you hold it against them. I think(subjective) majority of Russians see themselves as a traditional Christian country hold up traditional Christain values. And I see no reason for changing them. BTW I live in a Liberal democracy, and I don't like some of the Liberal values.
Agreed sanctions are used by all parties, but the Americans use them Extensively(applied to Many countries they don't like), long period and large numbers(e.g. Iran). I see Russia and China use them only when necessary, when the other party crosses their Red line and/or strongly upset them. They don't use all the time and remove them when the relation is restored.
Finished watching at 22min, so overall a good interview, Radchenko is more balanced in his views then most Russian and China Hawks. I agree with most of them. He should appear more often in other media to voice his more moderate views. I am afraid there are too many hawks flying around and worse still Neo Cons resident in Washington DC.

It is not a war between Russia and China on the one side and the Western countries on the other side. It is a much bigger war. It is a war between the Global South (the non-western countries) on one side and the Western countries on the other side. And the fundamental reason for the war lies in the different economic models of the two blocks. Whereas the economic model of the Global South is based on the hard work and ingenuity of their peoples and on trade and peaceful cooperation among countries, the economic model of the Western countries is based on stealing the wealth of the Global South using brute force and other devious means such as lying, cheating, blackmailing, coercion and threats to carry out their robberies.

The problem with these think tanks is the worn-out box models of the world and politics, combined with highly subjective criteria to fill these boxes with propagandistic content. It is a dangerous construct because it does not recognise the current realities in China and Russia, for example. Russia is not a backward economy and China does not have imperialistic and hegemonic tendencies. So, these armchair / arms length critiques are not helpful and it comes across as the promotion of Western exceptionalism.
