Hi Rania, thanks for your very interesting talk with Prof.Ken. Just to add a little fun fact, at the end of the Spanish-America war, the Treaty of Paris was signed in 1898 (between Spain and USA) where US paid Spain 20 million for taking control of the Philippines. The map of Philippines, then, did not include any island in the South China Sea. When US was running Philippines thereafter, they never complained or disputed the China (against the Qing dynasty, later the Republic of China, governed by the KMT, backed by US) and its12 dash lines over the South China Sea. After KMT lost the civil and fled to Taiwan, the People's Republic of China revised the original 12 dash lines to 9 dash lines. Issues began until today, what irony!
Regardless of how many dash lines or how many US bases there were, there was no stopping of the Japanese's invasion and dashing all over the places way back, starting on 8th Dec 1941, one day after Pearl Harbor. Thank you for bringing attention to tension in south china sea. US is so far away from south china sea yet US & allies ships or planes keep showing up near China borders to conduct military exercises. What will you do if you see more and more strangers keep loitering outside your home? Will you be forced to beef up your home security against a potential trespassing in the future? Chinese presence in spratly islands had always been recorded in chinese navigation sea maps for centuries and even Japan handled over the sovereignty rights to China after their defeat in ww2. If there is a dispute between countries, why is US involved when its so far away from China. Philippines is been used now as a proxy to create conflicts and tension with China in south china sea. Philippines parked an old ship in the disputed region with China decades ago and had a gentlemen agreement with China to tow away the ship with the previous Philippines President. On top of that, Philippines high ranking military officer had a recorded agreement such that Philippines will not send any building materials to re-build broken ship. However, the current Philippines President instead of honoring these agreements with China, denied all that and told media he was never aware of it and made attempts to rebuild the broken ship now. Philippines clearly has been used and continue acts of provocation and will cause more instability in the region, which is what US is hoping for. The propaganda is so blinding that people continue to see US as a protector of peace and could not even pause and think with logic or reasoning for few moments that US had been causing threats to sell peace.

Israel is participating in the Rim of the Pacific air and sea military exercises this year. It is led by the US 3rd Fleet which is based in San Diego, California, and is leaving around the end of June to go to the RIMPAC base in Pearl Harbour, Hawai'i. The RIMPAC exercises take place for a couple of weeks in July every two years. This year, opposition will be expanded. In addition to the mass rallies in Hawai'i, there will be a rally in San Diego.

Here is my take on the brewing crisis in the South China Seas. I have stated this many times. China will not have a choice of going to war! The US will be the one who will pull the trigger for the war they seek. China can be consistently cool headed. However it will be Washington who decides when the war will take place. It takes two to tango does not apply in this context.
USA usually creates a false event & then blames its chosen adversary. Thus, it creates a "reason" to war.

Taiwan, Diaoyu island as well as other surrounding islands are always part of China, which is recorded and recognized by the world. However, Japan defeated the Qing Dynasty in the late 1800s during its expansionary campaigns in the region and strong-armed China into signing the humiliating Treaty of Shimonoseki that officially ceded Taiwan and surrounding islands, including Diaoyu island, which the Japanese renamed to ‘Senkaku Islands’ in 1900. Don't lie! China never said that it owned the South China Sea. It said that it owns the islands in the South China Sea, which were officially recognized by the United States, Britain, Russia, and China by signing two international treaties.
Following the defeat and surrender of Japan in World War II, international treaties such as the Cairo Declaration signed on December 1, 1943, by the United States, Britain, the Soviet Union, and China legally returned all territories in the East and South China Sea stolen by Japan to pre-revolutionary China. The Potsdam Declaration of July 1945 reiterates that the terms of the Cairo Declaration will be carried out. On August 15, that same year, the Japanese Emperor announced Japan's acceptance of the Potsdam Declaration and its unconditional surrender to the Allies. On December 9, 1947, China, with the help of an American military ship, took over the ownership of all the South China Sea Islands from Japan. At that time, all countries admitted and recognized that the South China Sea, which once was a colony of Japan, was back to China after WWII. However, the US ignored the treaty and rewarded Japan with its administration rights (not ownership) over the Diaoyu Islands by signing the San Francisco Treaty in 1951 without China's consent, which is illegal.

Typically, under UNCLOS 200nm is the Exclusive Economic Zone. 12nm is the territorial limit. Where the 200nm claims to EEZs overlap, a dividing line is usually negotiated. Indonesia has seized and destroyed Chinese fishing vessels in the past, claiming they were operating in the Indonesian EEZ. Freedom of navigation operations are a US device to leverage themselves into the South China Sea issues among the riparian states. China does not and has not obstructed anyone's freedom of navigation in the SCS. Fishing and mineral exploitation are EEZ disputes not territorial disputes. There are two exceptions, Itu Abu claimed by Philippines in the Spratly Islands and their claim to Scarborough Shoals, a low water elevation (not territory). Reefs and low water elevations rights go with the EEZ.

Societies form to allow specialization such that provisioning can be done more efficiently and in greater volumes for all of its members. Healthy and holistic citizens advocate nurturing policies and will not begrudge resource usage with best practices procedures to see the nurturing done.
The assumptions are based on the idea that whatever provisions are produced will be applied to the meeting of basic needs equitably. They are also based on the idea that everyone will have more time to focus on quality of life enhancements, equitably. But, most of all, although often unspoken, it is founded on the idea that the members who do not proclaim themselves political sociopaths with their actions deserve optimal autonomy and not just to simply survive. Individualism's self interest as a social ideology is born of political sociopathy affecting the efforts of society creation.
The question then becomes; How do we limit political sociopathy? Why is this important? Because we know from history the sociopaths will band together and raid our productive achievements. We must defend ourselves from this either proactively or after the fact and we see how doing so after the fact is working out, so maybe we need to try something not yet attempted. We may want start by adopting a zero tolerance for political sociopathy in policy creation.
All governance will descend into oligarchy, plutocracy and fascism at rates that are determined by the quality and stability of its consensus seeking strategies, the tolerance of bad faith actors in its processes, its best practices policies and the documentation of data that goes into the making of its policy choices. They cannot be compared outside that framework in regard to speed of that descent. Consensus seeking strategies are what create the possibility of a society. Anything less creates a war zone. As such these are the foundational topics of establishing a healthy society.
It's great to hear such expertise from people who don't speak or read Chinese. They really have great insight into how China works. Such wisdom! They missed the part about how China is a Han ethnostate, but hey, who's counting. Tibet? Eastern Turkmenistan? It can be overlooked. The most important thing is to understand China as the function of an economic theory. This really grasps the heart of the matter.
