  • Watercolor pencils and How I use them... 3 techniques.
    1) Color in your petal or shape, with the colors you like, wet your paintbrush, no drips, and wash over the colors, allow them to blend and swirl together, get creative maybe red and yellow to make orange! Save those white spaces :-)
    2) Wet your Princeton 8 Velvetouch
    amzn.to/3RGJkz1 ( or Dugato Brush Set amzn.to/42NxUeX) and run it along the tip of your watercolor pencil, to pick up color, use it to paint your shapes and petals.
    This is great when your traveling, especially with a water brushes. (SO HANDY and easy to travel with. no water wells needed!) bityl.co/M2Fy
    3) Use your regular watercolors to paint your shapes, next, use your pencils to add details, viens in your petals, outline, whatever adds a little pop and interest!
    Most of all have fun, play, see what you can create.
    The watercolor pencils I purchased (years ago) are -

My Meeden paper suggestion is 100% cotton, has a really great texture and is finer grade. My Artisto paper recommendation is student grade, handles lots of water, (still good for wet on wet) and is a bit less expensive.

    Debbie- you can create a palette of watercolor pencil on paper to use as a ‘glaze’ of sorts. The test swatch could be used to pick up color as a palette. You could even do a strip of water color rubbings and take with you on a trip! ;) Also.. if you work from the lightest part of the petal to the darkest you can get a softer looser look.

      This is also a great way to make "paint with water" pages for kids.. color a palette for them either on a separate sheet of cardstock, or directly along the side of the page and they can simply use water to paint. Really cuts down on the mess.

    Hi Debbie I mostly use the watercolor pencil for putting texture on my work instead of using a brush. You could use them for shadows also. So they do come in handy. Thank you 😊 . I just don't care for the separation of the colors. The pencils don't blend very well. Theres nothing like watercolors themselves. ❤. JK FLORIDA USA 🇺🇸

      @DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I agree, I think if I practiced more I may be able to blend better, and blending light to dark also would be better, Next time! They are easy to travel with, much cleaner! Oh, and if you wet your brush and pick up the color from the pencils it acts like watercolors, and a much better flow and blend of colors. I think it was the third petal here I painted. Happy painting from California~

    I think I would like the pencils most for adding details after regular watercolor…like veins on leaves or bark on trees etc. I also line the idea of using them in the car. I wonder if I sharpened mine and did a lighter steps of layers to get a pretty blend. But again, I think I prefer regular watercolor.

    • @DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy
      @DebbieWalkerArtmadeeasy  7 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, you are probably true on that. I always use a cold press because I love that texture but I am sure using a hot press, the color pencils when you get them wet with blend much. I have tried so many papers in my workshops and for my videos and things and have found the Artisto be the best for myself for the price point, when I do something as a gift or a commission, I definitely use a arches or 100% cotton paper.

    Great video Debbie! Appreciate you taking the time to create this video for us:-) The different techniques were so helpful and you’ve inspired me to start using the Faber Castell pencils I have. I wondered if we can erase the initial pencil sketch after using the watercolor pencils? What are your thoughts on outlining a sketch with watercolor pencils? I tried doing so with sketching lemons the other day and unfortunately it was so hard to see the lemon yellow outline and then I wasn’t sure how the outline would look once wet and moved on to another painting:-0 Not to be greedy or anything,;-) but you mentioned water brushes - that would be another helpful video to show us how to use those especially, when traveling or for plein air painting. Many thanks!

      I’m so glad you are enjoying my videos. Yes you absolutely I’ve said it. That will depend on the paper your using, you can press hard or light, it will modify the amount of watercolor pencil and the vibrance of the color the more you press. Play with both light and moderate pressure see which you prefer.

    @deirdrelewis1454 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I think it’s the same as anything else…you get what you pay for. If you can afford Faber Castell or Caran Dache, they will blend effortlessly. Pretty much anything else won’t. I have a small set of Lyra which I usually sketch with and then paint over or use to add extra details. Like yours, they don’t really look that good on their own since you can always see the pencil strokes and they leave some texture.
