I LOVE watercolor pencils. They're my favorite medium. They're so much fun. My personal recommendation is Derwent Inktense. They're a little different than original watercolor pencils, they act a little more like ink. They layer easier as they don't reactivate on the paper once they've been wet once. And you can layer the shades. But that's a personal choice for my art style, it's not a quality thing. But I always found them so much fun to you. I hope you give wc pencils a try and that you love them! Whichever brand you choose.
I have to say I find my ignorance astounding. I have underestimated colouring pencils all my life. You have completely changed my perception of colouring pencils and inspired me to give them ago, as i always wanted to start painting but found traditional oil based pigments intimidating.
6:58 The wood will soak water, too, and re-hydrate. Re-hydrated wood expands. So you put stress on the wood casing. When soaking the watercolor pencil lead do it in shallow water to avoid getting the wood casing soaking wet. or use a wet sponge or wet cloth to keep the stress for the wood casing minimal. When working with watercolors of any type having a wet cloth and or sponge in reach is always a good idea-
@@PatriciaPageMosaicArtsCrafts Life is too short, I soak exactly as demonstrated 6:20. I use my pencils daily, the wood has no enough time to misbehave, since my sharpener eats them before. :-) This is my preferred way of using Albrecht Dürer pencils, when I want vivid colors: there is brutal difference, if you use the wet/water-dipped pencil on wet paper or dry paper. On dry paper the pencil marks can never be removed, they are permanent and final, you can soften them but you cannot eliminate them, which is excellent for a number of cases. When you use wet pencil on we paper, however, you will have vivid colors and you can wash away the pigments completely. Something like what is shown at 9:03
I found a set of watercolor pencils at the dollar store, and I had never heard of them before. I had used regular colored pencils, but I was unsure of how blending with water would change the application. With your tutorial, my first draw-painting (drainting? pawing?) of an apple has come out... acceptable! I love the alternate techniques of wetting the lead directly and using the brush to pull lead off the pencil. I think this might become one of my favorite ways to draw now! Thank you!

That was the most helpful video I have watched on watercolor pencils. All other videos say not to get the pencils wet, so I really appreciated you showing all the different ways to use them!
Yes please! More videos about watercolor pencils would be much appreciated! There’s just not enough content on putting the techniques to use on an actual full piece of work (like you did with the rose). Thank you!!
Whoa! What is that wizardry with that manual pencil sharpener?! And that Tiger drawing is exquisite!! It looks like a photograph! I'm so impressed right now. I can't believe such talent.
I was sharing the video with my niece and she said, "I don't even want to look at this it's too beautiful." She thought it was a real picture of the tiger. Great work keep it up. 👍
It was like you secretly knew I would need this video 🤣 As a digital artist who has sooo much paper and traditional medium supplies I’ve always wondered why I bought them and when I would use them. By chance I dug out my watercolors last night including the pencils and struggled with a piece. Now, after watching this tutorial I’m feeling a lot more confident in going into my next piece 😊 Thanks for the tutorial! It was incredibly informative 🥰
Very nice demonstration. I just purchased some water color pencils for a family member for Christmas and this is a good demonstration of how they can be used for nice art work. Thank you.
A good alternative to washi tape (as it can be expensive for such a small amount), is masking tape! The tape you would use when painting your living room for example. Just remove some of the stickiness by putting it on your clothes and then lifting it back off. Now you can apply it to your paper
@casscamden740It’s a tried and true method only used on the margins of the art work. I’ve never heard of or experienced fibers transferring to the white margins. But you could use a white tshirt or other fabric that won’t show. Masking tape is notorious for pulling up paper.
I love my Albrecht Durer wc pencils, which I started to use during the first lockdown. For the last 18 months I’ve been practicing all the techniques you have demonstrated and would like more tutorials. I have been attempting to recreate a frosty rural scene, with fields, hedges and trees but I’m struggling as it is so very different to a snow scene. I like misty scenes too, with or without frost. Thank you 🙏🏼
My favorite form of paining is watercolor and my greatest love is drawing. But I never quite figured out how to use my watercolor pencils. So I was very excited to see this video in my sub feed today. I definitely would appreciate more on watercolor pencil techniques lesson videos. For me, my favorite subject is realism and portraits (human and animal portraits).

Great to see your face again Kirsty! I've been watching your videos a lot lately and learning a lot, I've improved SO much just by watching tons of your videos! I've ran out of videos of yours to watch so I'm glad to see a new one :)
Greetings from Canada! Thank you for the great demo. Your skill in watercolour makes it look easy BUT you are a great inspiration for me - a beginner watercolourist. Plus, you sound so sweet. Thank you for both!
This was so informative and well explained. I have a bit of experience with acrylic paint but I was debating whether to get started with water color paints and this video sold it to me. It looks so versatile and exciting. Thanks!
I absolutely love watercolor pencils. You get the beautiful painting effects like watercolor with the control of a pencil. It's perfection! Thank you so much for sharing, your colored pencil art is always amazing!
Loved watching you paint the rose. Have never thought to dip a brush in water or use water and add colour on a plate or something so use a paint brush to apply. Thank u💕
Loved your teaching style. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, very helpful tips. 💜💜💜 The blending from light to dark advice was a very important 🔑. Glad I saw this before trying watercolors again after decades of not using it. Learned in high school but never continued practicing bc I got into acrylics more. Thanks again! 🙏🏽
I really appreciated this. I would love to see landscapes that include buildings. Urban settings too. I have a photo I took in Colmar, France of multicolored buildings that I would love to try watercolor pencils on. And I think Albrecht Durer is the best, the lines totally dissolve with water!
That was an awesome tutorial, possibly the best intro on using watercolor pencils. I have Albrecht Dürer 24 set and 5:27 the only way to make the colors as vivid as you demonstrated on the watermelon example is with using the wet on wet trick which you explained later. Dry on dry with Albrecht Dürer never gives vivid enough colors not even when I add multiple dry on dry layers. But, immediately, when I wet the pencil tip and the paper, I get brutally great colors. I have the impression that Faber-Castell has designed these pencils to be used this way intentionally. 8:23 Wow, I love this. I haven't used it, great, thank You!
