  • The largest vampire bat known to have existed, Desmodus draculae, lived throughout the Americas and may have fed on megafauna such as giant ground sloths. There's also a possibility that it might not be quite as extinct as we'd thought...

    Can you do a video on Necromantis? It's a giant carnivorous bat with massive teeth. Weighing 47 grams with a meter long wingspan, it was large enough to hunt birds and rats. It also might have been a scavenger, hence the name.
    Edit: Yes, I'm aware the Spectral Bat is far larger, but for the Quercy Formation in France, it was a giant. Plus, Necromantis still had a more robust jaw and wider teeth than the Spectral. I still think that's enough to call it monster amoung bats, despite the small size.

    • @Dodoraptor4
      @Dodoraptor4 4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Depressed Gojisaurus Rex check modern bat species.
      The greater noctule hunts birds mid air
      The spectral bat, who is more than twice the mass of Necromantis, hunts birds even bigger than itself by crushing their skull while they are asleep, and also hunts small mammals. It is also likely to also be the inspiration for Camazotz as well as the vampire, as it is much larger and hunts similarly to how the god kills- by going for the head.
      The spectral’s smaller relative, the big eared wooly bat, hunts more mammals than its larger relative.
      The Australian ghost bat hunts by wrapping its wings around its prey and giving multiple bites. The prey includes large insects, small mammals, birds and reptiles and even things like crocodile hatchling.
      The pallid bat is a generalist, having a diverse diet that can include venomous arthropods and scavenging.

    This video is very good, but there are two mistakes. The use of “microbat” is outdated. Microchiroptera is now known to be a paraphyletic grouping. Megachiroptera and Microchiroptera have been replaced with been Yinpterochiroptera and Yangochiroptera. Also, the most recent D. draculae remains are dated to 3,000 ybp, not 300 ybp.
    Besides that though, again, this is a very good and nice to see a relatively obscure taxa like this get some love. I’d love to see a video on some other bizarre extinct bats like Synemporion, Aegyptonycteris and “Hipposideros” besaoka

    A layman question:
    Is there any genomic detail that shows "Rotunda" and "Draculae" are different species? I was idly speculating on the abundance of larger fauna leading to better chance of statistical outliers like larger vampire bats?

    • @hyperactivehyena
      @hyperactivehyena 4 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Honestly this was exactly what I was thinking- if they are extremely closely related it seems totally plausible that draculae *is* rotunda- just a much larger population/subspecies that survived as long as the megafauna did and petered out along with them.
      Now my question is if the very fact that they were larger would have extended their range slightly into colder regions just because they were that small bit more capable of holding onto body heat?

    • @SuperLoops
      @SuperLoops 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    Isn't the difference in Habitat temperature potentially explained not by having the region the tooth was found in be warmer, but by the fact that, potentially, a larger bat has an easier time enduring slightly harsher winters? as long as it finds enough food, of course, and, if it was present around 500 years, it would have only needed to hang around for a bit longer for the Spanish to Introduce cattle rearing into the region, which could have reintroduced large mammals for them to feed on, and the relatively "hands free" method of rearing practiced in and around the area could have meant they weren't as frequently spotted, and even if spotted, most people could just have confused them with a particularly big common vampire

    I doubt those scientists studied all the caves around the extinct giant vampire bats' alleged range. There could be undiscovered caves or habits where the those giant vampire bats thrive. I could be wrong about those scientists not found and studied all the caves in the alleged giant vampire bat's range.

    Hey Ben, I’m no fan of reaction videos, but I’d love to see you do a review/recap of tierzoo’s most recent Pterosaur vid. Your channel taught me how much I love Azdarchids, and I really like tierzoo’s content, so I’d love to see your opinions on it.
    Also this video was really good as usual.

      Why horrific? I think they're cute. And it's not like an individual is dangerous to a human. They're very skittish and only drink a single teaspoon of blood a night.
