Many years later Eddie admitted that these types of appearances were nerve wracking for him. He said it was harder playing in front of 40 people than 20,000. He was also trying to get clean and he had a hard time coping without the alcohol. He used alcohol to calm his nerves. Despite his addiction Eddie was an incredibly kind and humble person. We lost an amazing talent and his family lost a good person. RIP EVH.

    NOVEL ALERT:::::
Jim "Junior" DeCola (9:43 ) built this guitar for Ed about 10 yrs after he was endorsing Kramer.
This is a true and great story!
Juniors story begins at the Music Lab in Lansing Illinois, where the custom
shop luthier Mike Powers built custom axes, with Jim "Junior" DeCola at his side as
his protoge'. Not long after, Powers was hires by Peavy leaving Jr. at the helm. A Brilliant builder in his own right by then.
Well, When NAMM was still at the McCormick place here in Chicago, and Junior had an Interesting story he told me. (This was like 83' ) So while waiting at a red light on Lake shore drive, Jr glances over to the car next to them and who's in the back seat of this black Chrysler? None other than Eddie Van Halen and his wife! Jim rolls down the window and motions for Eddie to roll down his window. Ed does so thinking this guys a huge fan or something, and Junior yells, "Hey"! Why don't you get a REAL guitar"? Well, Eddie's Jaw drops in disbelief with his mouth open as if he was posing that famed "surprised" look he often has on display while ripping out a wicked solo, and exclaims, "Hey man, Kramer's are good guitars", Fuck you! To which Junior replies, Sheeet! I can make you one WAY better!
The traffic light turns green, and Ed and junior are gritting their teeth while shaking their fists at each other, as if saying "I'll get you Mush Mouse"!" as both cars speed off. LMFAO
Well I moved to Cali for a few yrs, and when I returned, I went to the Lab (Music Lab) go in and ask," Hey, where's Junior guys"? "Oh, he went down south. Mike Powers got him a job building guitars at Peavey." Don't know how exactly they're paths crossed again, but I'll be damned if he didn't build Eddie that Peavey guitar called the "Wolfgang".
Eddie was famous for getting wasted and leaving tons of messages on Jr's old micro cassette answering machine, like "Hey mother fucker, I got a ticket waiting for you at the airport, my B string is buzzing and you gotta get the fuck out here and fix it NOW! (The poor guy, recently divorced strung out and probably just looking for a friend when he was down) Thank God we didn't lose him alot sooner! Anyway, Jr' then went to Fenders Custom shop and built axes for Clapton , Beck etc. And now heads Gibsons production facility in Nashville. He was just a Punk kid who used to skateboard down Broadmoor ave. in Munster where me and a few cats a few yrs older smoked J's Jammed out Nugent, Thin Lizzy UFO, etc. All cranked to 11 in Tom Mihaelarious' garage. (Tommy had Spanish fly and Eruption down to a "T") How you ask? playing the LP @ 16 speed essentially an octave lower at half speed. LOL No youtube then Kids! RIP Ed. You made one fucking hell of a splash brother!

@@Erikr-ex9dj I don't really think Fleetwood or Buckingham Nicks are rock groups. Eddie was rock/metal and was revolutionary to rock/metal guitar. I had the impression he never really did 'grow up' until much much later on in his 50s and 60s.. fame/$$$ at such a young age tend to effect one's social behaviour/interaction with others.. I believe evh the man is still a thru and thru guitar kid at first, the kid down the block so to speak.. and didn't have the social skills to deal with the intricacy of public fame and being PC with ppl.. thus the stuff with band members etc later on..
the ongoing tension with dlr was what made the band great since the beginning (dlr admitted that himself as well in interviews etc), but the other side of that is what we seen in the mid 80s.. and later with Sam in the 00s...

I have always taken this stance and really had to remove myself from the VH fanbase over the last 10 years because of the vitriol. Tired of defending the brothers from all the bitter fans. Sad that it took Ed's death for people to shut up and enjoy the music. That's what happens when fans get involved in personal relationships and things that really aren't their business in the first place.

I was actually at this NAMM, at this particular demonstration. Eddie was very humble and down to Earth. And even signed my guitar and other items afterwards.
Miss you every day, Eddie. Now when I listen to any music, it doesn't matter what it is, it just doesn't seem the same anymore without you being here. I don't even have the attention span to sit through, and listen to an entire song anymore, because music at the moment just makes me want to see you on stage again, like I have numerous times; shredding, and then I start to think about how amazing Van Halen is and always will be, and then it really hits me trying to accept the fact that you're not here anymore. My guitar hero, my mentor. It's painful.
I pray that some doctor(s) in the near future will finally find a cure to abolish Cancer once and for all. Please God, give someone out there the ability to find a cure. These things are hard to deal with.
My deepest condolences go out to the Van Halen immediate family.

I totally relate to Eddie being nervous, people think these guys are gods but most great artists are introverts by nature and being in a setting where people are staring at you gives them anxiety attacks. I'm an artist and musician and suffer from almost debilitating panic attacks in certain situations, I could tell from the start of this video Eddie was having a panic attack by the way he was fumbling around, it really sucks and people who don't deal with it have no idea how terrible it is. That's why so many musicians and artists are addicts, they rely on chemicals to block out the noise. If he was on stage in front of thousands of people it wouldn't be as bad because people would be focusing on the band as a whole and he could lose himself in his guitar, being in front of a few people by himself is way scarier because he is the center of attention, he probably felt like he was falling off a cliff. I think about how much further in life I would be if I didn't have to deal with that crap it really sucks so I totally identify and feel for Eddie. That's why it pisses me off when I see people constantly bringing up his personal life and problems instead of just enjoying his gift to the world.

Watching gems like this is helping ease the pain of losing the King Edward, You can see how humble, shy and reserved he was. Us musicians are a sensitive lot. Thank you for such a wonderful and heartfelt tribute to our King Edward.
The Missus woke me up crying and for the entire day we couldn’t listen to a note of King Edward without the waterworks comin’ - so many good times with his music -it felt weird
We found watching interviews with him and other kind folks like yourself paying tribute to Eddie makes it somewhat easier to bear. We literally had a day of intensely mourning. It might sound daft but Ed’s playing and attitude is hugely responsible for inspiring me to be the person I am.
There’s a Bad Religion ( Punk Band ) Lyric that says it al “ Everyone you love leaves a mark on your soul,
The world is a little less bright without King Edward
Im fighting cancer and depression and its been especially tough with the news of Eddie’s passing but hearing all these wonderful tributes and reaction and the love and joy he brought and is bringing….makes it a tad bit easier
Much love and respect! Thank you for honouring our King Edward. Eddie's music touched us so deeply because of his love for the instrument and the innovations he has done. To us, it feels like the brightest and best brother, Uncle, friend mentor you ever had is not in our realm anymore. You have Nothing but love from the rock/metal / guitarist community, respect for your tribute to EVH, Rock n Metal does not get the exposure and respect that other genres get.
So, you are forever in the hearts of many a Rock / Metal / Guitar fan's hearts. Stay safe & all the best wishes to you. Watch this Video Interview and you'll see why we're hurting so much...The world is a little less bright without King Edward This is a brilliant interview if you haven’t seen it th-cam.com/video/yb26D8bBZB8/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Z%C3%B3caloPublicSquare
most people don’t know the King Edward was a bi-racial half Asian / half white Immigrant and that his lifelong friends were the black kids who stood up for them when they came to the US. A definitive American Dream story.
Eddie played the solo on Michael Jackson’s Beat it, re-arranged it so it sounded more ‘Rock’ and introduced Michael to a wider audience for free.
Eddie buried Dimebag Darrell from Pantera with his original Bumblebee Guitar when Dime’s life partner Rita asked him to make a Copy Ed said “an Original deserves an Original”
Vinnie Paul ( Pantera ) Dimebag’s brother says the last words his brother said to him was Van f+*in Halen’ their nightly ritual before hitting the stage.
He gave Jerry Cantrell 5150 Stacks after touring with Alice In Chains and the last concert he went to was TOOL and a TOOL fan asked him to take a picture of the fan in front of Tool’s stage and he did, The fan had no idea who Ed was and Ed was chill with it.
Frank Zappa loved and respected Eddie and got him to teach Dweezil who was obsessed with ED When Frank died Ed was THE 1st first to call with condolences and to offer any assistance.
He did the same for Chris Cornell Guitarist Pete Thorn when Chris Passed
He got Allan Holdsworth signed to Warner to introduce Allan to a wider audience
He was the 1st to mod his guitars in such an extreme way chasing tone, Creating the Super Strat - Humbuckers in Strat style guitars, Waxing Pickups, Variac on his amp and did his first 2 albums with the original Fender Whammy which led to the creation of the Floyd Rose
    Whammy Bar.
Les Paul Said Ed, him & Leo Fender are the only guys who know how to make guitars
His 5150 Amp is still THE go to amp and sound of Modern metal, Gojira use the EVH 5150
His Rhythm Playing was funky, tasteful and rockin’ and his songwriting is the reason his loss is affecting grandparents, parents, kids and all ethnicities alike as Van Halen songs will live forever.
He bravely and quietly fought cancer for 20 years
    Enjoy EVH th-cam.com/video/L9r-NxuYszg/w-d-xo.html&ab_channel=Hazardteam

It was made 50 plus years ago, for the rock genre. Trouble is, they don’t make the old school tubes that gave us perfection back in the day. However, Eddie’s personal innovations are to be applauded. I loved when he started talking about muting, muffling and gain control. I always stress this about individual tone. The way you hit the strings, the way you place your hands, changes greatly between players and you need to adjust gain levels (and every other setting available as well, of course) accordingly. I've had an episode in the past where a guy at a sound check was telling me "Yeah it's easier to play an electric (in opposition to playing an acoustic), 'cause you don't have to hit the strings so hard..." and I told him "OK, if you think so, here's my guitar. Play it". And he proceeded to make a fool out of himself by being on stage 5 mins producing nothing but feedback. This happened back in 1998 when I used way too much gain... :)

The greatest thing about Eddie Van Halen is, although he adopted hand tapping skills, he took it to another place, entirely! If he didn’t do anything great with the foundation he adopted, no one would’ve paid any attention! The fact that people wait on every note, respect his words and pay such close, undivided attention to this man, is testimony that he truly did something with a style that no one else did, quite the way he did. I say this because there is much debate about how a particular performer or band(s) have ‘stolen’ styles, music, etc., without giving due credit to it’s original purveyors. What I have to say about that is that music is ‘universal’ and most people have ‘taken’ from something that was already there. However, certain individuals have truly gone places others haven’t and they get certain attention and credit they should receive. Eddie’s a person that did so much, playing, innovating, inventing and just challenging the ‘conventional’ ways that others approached instruments and music. He was truly ‘unique’, as there are others in music I also admire. It’s a thing, really, when one artist attempts to copy or cover another. No one ‘truly’ copies anyone because in each individuals mind and hands, there is just them. I even believe that when any artist goes on stage or into the studio, they ‘hardly’, if ever really replicate the way they played something before. It may be very close but to understand this, you have to have played an instrument for a number of years. Ed, Rest In Peace. Your music gave and continues to give me much joy. Thanks!

Going on stage with your friends and doing your thing is SO different than sitting in cront of a crowd all alone like this. I completely understand, it's ½ the reason I drank too.
