Same I grew up around them and remember hearing the stories of them, and my aunt ex boyfriend new david lee Roth in high school, and my same aunt went blind and her doctor was david lee Roth father back in the 70s
Humble? Are you kidding?!! EVH was almost anything but humble. He puts down everybody from former bandmates (Roth, Hagar, Anthony) to contemporary rivals (Randy Rhodes), to his major influences (jimmy Page). And look at pictures of him circa 2005-07, I think Alex stopped grounding him by then
I remember the fist time i heard jump i thought it was the coolest tune i have ever heard.I am 53 now and i still love that tune after hearing it probably 10000 times
Kevin Smith: I vividly remember the "world radio premiere" of Jump in late '83 when I was a kid. My sister was driving the car, I was riding shotgun. It came on and my metalhead (at the time) sister said, "THIS is Van Halen?" It was a shock to me also, as I had already been exposed to Fair Warning and their debut album. But once the initial shock wore off and I got used to it, I saw Jump for what it is: a GREAT song!
Met Eddie a couple of years ago while having lunch at Pebble Beach. He was with a couple of loser comedians I won’t mention who. We walked out together and I finally got the nerve to ask for a photo with him. He was more than happy too. He looked good. I was a drummer so one day it would be nice to meet Alex. I think this is the first time I heard him talk. Sounds very cool. Hope Alex & Wolf are finding peace with Christ. RIP Eddie
I know the comedians your talking about. It’s no one worth mentioning as it’s not a huge name to most but I remember the era you spoke of. If people look hard enough they can hear the comedian speak of that era. Unless it was literally just a couple of years ago and not a decade ago, but all of eddies interview are great. I do believe the family are believers, Valerie raised Wolf and I think Alex and Eddie were raised with a certain faith. Personal demons aside, we all have them, it’s great to see the humanity of the two brothers and you can tell in this era Eddie was in a place of heavy substance use and decades of habits and thankfully was sober in the final ten plus years or more or so of his life before he passed, but you can tell areas where Eddie begins to get defensive when he says “it’s not just me, it was all of us” and Alex comforts him and the interview moves on. But I just will always love the memories and the music and all of it. Oddly enough, or not, it’s kind of crazy, the last live concert I saw before everything got cancelled from the pandemic was seeing DLR perform Van Halen music LIVE. I count that as a blessing and an interesting weird synchronicity that one of my musical heroes EVH passing that brought light to my life and the music they all creative saved my spirit. RIP Eddie Van Halen, peace and love to you all, the family the bands the fans alike!

I think looking back, Ed was a perfectionist and was extremely driven I think life probably came easier for Alex who was just more laid-back and didn't put nearly as much pressure on himself. That said, that pressure Ed put on himself is what made him a legend. RIP EVH.
@@5DNRG there's not a VH/Roth song I don't like! I love black sabbath too and a lot of heavier stuff. I like variety of music from motown to rock. Probably why I love all the Roth stuff. Although EVH is the main reason I love Van Halen!!
It was a bit of a let down from the debut album, but we still bought copies and listened and appreciated didn’t we does sound better now as Ive slowed down
I remember seeing Eddie when he toured Perth with Gary Cherone. It was unreal. Such an awesome concert. There will never be another band like that again. Eddies sound was awesome and we will never have another guitarist like Eddy 🤩
I’m reading Alex book now titled “Brothers” and came back to watch this interview with the two of them together. These guys had a tight bond that will never end not even with Eddie being gone. I highly recommend the book.
That was a favorite album to him . No cover tunes . He was the boss on that album . He argued with the overrated Ted Templeman . Ted wanted some cover tunes and Eddie didn't . I think FAIR WARNING is the best Van Halen album still
Hadn’t seen this one until recently. Compare this to only 2 years previous, the Balance tour. His weight was his “tell”, like most addicts. Bless his heart. Genius is a 2-edged sword.
Eddie was in a bad place at this point in his life. I’m glad he cleaned himself up towards the end and un-did a lot of the damage the substances did to his embattled relationships. My hat’s off to Alex. A class act, always looking out for his kid brother (with very little power or control over him).
@@daveyboy8907 Mid to late 80’s actually. Sam did an interview where he told a story about Valerie getting piised at Ed because a handful of ludes fell out of his pocket. I really don’t want to dissect the mans life. I was just saying I’m thankful he cleaned it up when he did and that he had a brother like Alex to help him.
More like he probably rolled tape whenever he stepped into 5150. I'm sure the tapes have tons of silence and the occasional sounds of a crack pipe being lit or heavy snorting of lines..
That tape library... every Eddie Van Halen fan should be wondering about that treasure trove of unheard music. If the Van Halen family can benefit financially by releasing it in some form, I hope they do. He created it, so they should benefit and we all want to hear it - thats a win win as far as I'm concerned. Rest in Peace EVH
I'd love to hear some of the recordings of when they were a club band in good quality. They were just ridiculously good as a club band in the '70's doing Zeppelin, Deep Purple, The James Gang, etc. Listening to that old '70's stuff, it boggles my mind that it took them so long to get signed to a record deal.
If you've ever seen the movie THE WILD LIFE from the early 80's, EVH did the soundtrack to it, and you can hear songs that didn't come out for almost a decade in there and in the raw form. That'll give you a sense of the scope of the tape room.
I can say alot of the tapes were concert recordings . They recorded their only concert in Anchorage Alaska and had microphones around the inside of the arena . He also had alot of demos made since the 5150 studio was finished . Ed played all the instruments on the 1984 demo for the rest of the band . Scammy Hagar said there isn't much left . How the fuk would he know ? He hasn't been in Ed's studio that much in the past 26 years .
Alex explaining Panama to both the interviewer and Eddie is one of my favorite tidbits ever. Like you know from what Eddie said here that he wasn't clear on what the song was about, and you KNOW Dave would've given some rambling, oddball answer that didn't really answer anything at all. So hearing Alex casually break it down was entertaining and frankly kind of satisfying.
Look how healthy Alex looks here. Too bad his brother wasn’t the same. Ed lived a very long and prosperous life considering how hard he lived it. He really made some great music too. RIP
Alex much better health wise very obi it's. Neither brother were good looking, but Alex had better looks. Eddie's teeth shape in his mouth was unattractive, while Alex had a nice mouth

I absolutely love Ed and Al, and have been a huge VH fan from the start. No disrespect, Ed always was a cutie, but it's sad to see him like this due to all the drugs and alcohol he was doing then. Thankfully, he got sober again. I just wish he could have kicked smoking and vaping earlier too. His fans will forever miss his guitar genius and talent. RIP Ed, I hope you are with Jan and Eugenia and happy on the other side. There will never be another EVH. Your fans will never forget you and always be grateful for all the years of great music!

EVH looks so much better and more humble and just all around different man in an interview he held for the Smithsonian in 2016. Everybody has the right to improve and to change for the better.
That's the risk you take when you get into a band with siblings that are as close as these two. Something goes sour and they will team up at the drop of a hat.
It's crushing to watch this interview in a way, you can tell Ed is so sick here. He's still smiling and as sharp as a whip but physically unwell I think.
Eddie, (AND Alex and Michael and Dave and Sam, and Wolf), so grateful for you and your music. Shared much of this in a response so don’t mean to paste. My friend & I went to see Van Halen in 1979 we both dropped a hit of California Sunshine acid .. They put on a great show guitar solos & Alex drum solo it was great ... I'm so glad I got to see them .. RIP Eddie 💔🎸
Definitely one of the greatest guitar players of all time, but also a truly great songwriter. Eddie wrote so many iconic badass guitar riffs.
This interview just showed up on my news feed. Good interview. I still can’t believe Ed is gone.
Alex is a great big brother has Eddie back all the way.
My mom's old boyfriend played with them as children, he was also Dutch- Indonesian. I went to the same high school as David Lee, John Muir High School, and Eddie and Alex went to our rival Pasadena High School. I've always enjoyed their history in my hometown, makes me feel cooler by association.
Same I grew up around them and remember hearing the stories of them, and my aunt ex boyfriend new david lee Roth in high school, and my same aunt went blind and her doctor was david lee Roth father back in the 70s
beautiful story / comment
do you know John ?
You are. Hope life is good for you. ♫
I think I once owned Frank Sinatras bicycle!
Lol!!!
He's as humble as he can be, you can tell Alex kept him grounded.
Humble? Are you kidding?!! EVH was almost anything but humble. He puts down everybody from former bandmates (Roth, Hagar, Anthony) to contemporary rivals (Randy Rhodes), to his major influences (jimmy Page). And look at pictures of him circa 2005-07, I think Alex stopped grounding him by then
my guess is the electrician was drunk
I remember the fist time i heard jump i thought it was the coolest tune i have ever heard.I am 53 now and i still love that tune after hearing it probably 10000 times
I am 73 and it is my ring tone. Loved david lee roth as their frontman.
Jump was such a fun, cool video
@@judithryle2113 Keep on a Rockin Girl!!!
RIP Eddie
Carlos Mencia????

Eddie is UNCHAINED from the world. He is now on the Stairway To Heaven. RIP. Eddie.
I know you know that one of those is a Led Zepplin song but I guess you wouldn't want to say "He is now Runnin' With The Devil".
"Fair Warning" is a brilliant guitar album and the best VH album, IMO. Love Ed's response about "Panama" and Roth: "well, he's still in Panama then." LOL.
I dunno.. Their debut album is best in my humble opinion
@@robink.9966 Sure, that's a great one as well. There's a reason that that one has been certified "Diamond Status" by the RIAA.
@@JokersWild70 Didn't know that. That must make diamond Dave proud.
I agree mate.. its a classic
Debut has the classics of course, but Fair Warning is the vicious guitar. That opening of Unchained is the rippinest lick I've ever heard.
Great interview, thank you for posting. Eddie's recall is amazing. I still can't believe he's gone...😔💚🎸
Watching this I have tears in my eyes falling down my husband eddie admired eddie van halen Rip EDDIE van halen you are a guitar God Thank you for the music
Eddie held in so much anger.... RIP
I agree. He should have resolved his troubles but he had his reasons.
In his latter years, he appeared very happy. It was good to see.
@Bruce S Life is short. Unfortunately Eddie learned that the hard way. RIP.
Love hearing the brothers talk about the music. Hope Alex and Wolfie continue to jam cuz Eddie will be watching and listening from above.
Agreed , Hopefully Wolfgang can convince Alex to pick up the sticks again and start playing again!!
You can feel the love these guys have for each other. Love Van Halen!
I think looking back, Ed was a perfectionist and was extremely driven I think life probably came easier for Alex who was just more laid-back and didn't put nearly as much pressure on himself. That said, that pressure Ed put on himself is what made him a legend. RIP EVH.
Love Eddie gonna miss him dearly but have the music for life
Dance the night away is a great song..can't believe they didn't like it.
As heavy hitters, it was too pop.
@@5DNRG there's not a VH/Roth song I don't like! I love black sabbath too and a lot of heavier stuff. I like variety of music from motown to rock. Probably why I love all the Roth stuff. Although EVH is the main reason I love Van Halen!!
@@5DNRG I love you ❤😊
Nah it was a filler
It was a bit of a let down
from the debut album, but we still bought copies and listened and appreciated didn’t we
does sound better now as Ive slowed down
Honestly, this is the most interesting interview Ive ever seen of Eddie and Alex.
I agree considering they don't do much press , usually very tight lipped and private.
He just loved the guitar music and had a passion for it it’s all he knew and thrived god bless Eddie and his brother
The whole band was exceptional in what they did....Alex's drumming is as awesome as his brothers guitar playing 😊
I remember seeing Eddie when he toured Perth with Gary Cherone. It was unreal. Such an awesome concert. There will never be another band like that again. Eddies sound was awesome and we will never have another guitarist like Eddy 🤩
Cherone tour with Van Halen was the best
@@checkmate2861 🔥
I saw them in San Antonio when they first came out ,it was and still is the best concert I've ever witnessed
I’m reading Alex book now titled “Brothers” and came back to watch this interview with the two of them together. These guys had a tight bond that will never end not even with Eddie being gone. I highly recommend the book.
6:15 --Ed recorded his guitar solos for Fair Warning at 4 am in the morning with his sound engineer...wtf? Wow..some of his best solos ever...
Yeah, I thought this was interesting, too!
When you're up 4 days straight what does 4am really matter?
he did the same thing with 1984. Him and the engineer up for days working on it at 5150. Ted Templeman talks about it in his book
That was a favorite album to him . No cover tunes . He was the boss on that album . He argued with the overrated Ted Templeman . Ted wanted some cover tunes and Eddie didn't . I think FAIR WARNING is the best Van Halen album still
@@akfreed6949 I agree. Ted is a square his book is boring
Rest in Paradise EDDIE VAN HALEN🙏🏽🎸
There are the One hit wonders and then there are the Van Halens. Certain musicians have a knack on making many wonderful music.
Eddie was so humble 🎸🎸🌠😎
Hadn’t seen this one until recently. Compare this to only 2 years previous, the Balance tour. His weight was his “tell”, like most addicts. Bless his heart. Genius is a 2-edged sword.
Eddie was in a bad place at this point in his life. I’m glad he cleaned himself up towards the end and un-did a lot of the damage the substances did to his embattled relationships. My hat’s off to Alex. A class act, always looking out for his kid brother (with very little power or control over him).
Eddie was fine,, its called life
@@daveyboy8907, Actually it was called cocaine, quaaludes and alcohol. We would have lost him way before now if he hadn’t cleaned himself up.....
joeschmoe665 quaaludes those have been gone since the 70s.
@@daveyboy8907 Mid to late 80’s actually. Sam did an interview where he told a story about Valerie getting piised at Ed because a handful of ludes fell out of his pocket. I really don’t want to dissect the mans life. I was just saying I’m thankful he cleaned it up when he did and that he had a brother like Alex to help him.
joeschmoe665 i guess when your famous you can get what ya want.
He's got a vault like Prince.
More like he probably rolled tape whenever he stepped into 5150. I'm sure the tapes have tons of silence and the occasional sounds of a crack pipe being lit or heavy snorting of lines..
The only difference is that Prince's vault is filled with complete albums.
@@violetgolden3380 you cant be sure that Eddie doesnt have complete music
@emmanuel de la cruz who said it a sport competition except you
@@desertmoonlight2880 true, but not much. He said himself it was mostly recordings of him noodling around. Said that for years.
I would bet its a lot of tapping and hammer ons
Normally songs from “the vault” aren’t released for a reason.
I thought it was about a race car that Dave saw on TV called Panama??
"Satisfying ..." Heh heh heh ... you just brought the Beavis out of me ...
@@leonskum.5682Dave wrote a song about the Statue of Liberty, so that would make sense.

Everybody has the right to improve and to change for the better.
That's the risk you take when you get into a band with siblings that are as close as these two. Something goes sour and they will team up at the drop of a hat.
I love Eddies outlook on music.
It's crushing to watch this interview in a way, you can tell Ed is so sick here. He's still smiling and as sharp as a whip but physically unwell I think.
