      When I saw them in '81 in New Haven, I was on Ed's side of the stage. During his little break, while Dave's blathering away booming through the P.A. ---Ed's at his rack of stuff, I yelled, "EDWAAARD VAAN HAAALEN!!!"...he whirls around and throws his cigarette at me. I was honored. Cigerettes Ed, not a metal pick. I use metal picks, and I smoke still also. Every time I light up I think of him, and my own mortality. When I moved into my current apartment in 2019, above the bedroom window is where I displayed the mini-frankenstrat I have. Next to it I displayed a religious porcelein cross. On October 6th of the next year, as I sat on my bed in tears about our hero, I happened to look out the window ---but then above it...and then realized why I had put those two items together. RIP Eddie.

    I cried multiple times throughout this video. His innovative guitar mastery and all around musical talent aside, there's that warm innocence, humbleness and genuine charm about him that makes his death so much more painful for us fans. He's one of those rare few that just seem to hurt way more when they die. People are mourning him around the world. He was so impactful. In this day and age 65 is young. He had so many years ahead of him. Fuck cancer!

      I just went to see Ed’s son Wolfgang, in honor of Ed and continuing the tradition of Van Halen. Had such a nice evening! Wolf is such a nice kid (32 and married!) He played Distance in honor of his Dad- touched all our hearts as there were quite a few of us in our late 50s and up! Ed is very much with Wolfie in spirit! I noticed his necklace and he’d just said his dad’s ashes are in the locket. I was 2nd row center and have great shots of Wolf! Caught a pick too! He did some playing that showed he was a chip off the ol block! Wolf was the luckiest kid! His dad was his legendary teacher!❤

      @ClassicRoyal that must have been amazing! I'm pushing 50. So I'm definitely old enough to have felt the VH magic. He's definitely part of the reason I started playing guitar in the early 90s, and I'm still going. I'm a mega fan of The Who. I just saw Roger Daltrey's solo show the other night. It was obviously packed with Who fans, and he made sure to play on the nostalgia of Townshend not attending and Moon and Entwistle not being with us anymore, but Townshend's brother Simon was there playing guitar. So I'm sure it was a similar feeling to what you had. Eddie's definitely a legend, though. He changed the way EVERYONE played. Lol

    I was always a die hard DLR fan, that to me as a teen in the 80's was just how it was, that was Van Halen. Now being 50 and really digging into this band with maturity that I have gained over the years I have come to realize a few things. While DLR is an excellent frontman, quite honestly Hagar is flat out a better vocalist in the pure sense, better range and more power. I have also come to appreciate that Sammy is actually a much better frontman than I ever gave him credit for. Who would I rather have a beer with? DLR of course!! But don't dis Sammy, he is actually fantastic at his craft and the group put out a lot of exceptional material with him.

      @bigmaxy
      I was one of those kids that age, but did *NOT* like post 84 VH
      While some of that is correct, i have to disagree with you there....many Gen X ers were huge fans of the DLR era and prefer it to the Hagar era and hate the Hagar era.
      "Don't compare, just enjoy both eras"?
      Why?
      I do not have to enjoy that era... because I dislike it. Why must I enjoy it? I won't compare them in this post but you most certainly cannot tell me to enjoy something I do not enjoy.
      I don't have to enjoy the new era of Queen, why? because I don't enjoy it.
      I am one of those Gen X kids, not a boomer, born 71, 9 years old when i got into VH in 81, fell in love with Fair Warning, the three live Oakland 81 songs on MTV and i was hooked (So This is Love, Hear About it Later and Unchained)....86 was when i bailed on them. And along with later DLR both of them faded from my mind....but i will always love VH 78-84.
      OLDER gen Xers LOVE old VH.
      Gen X begins in 1965. So the first gen Xers, fell in love with VH just as they rose in 78 and 79, and these gen X rs were teens of 13 & 14....kids like me were the "stragglers", who were old enough to see them and get them if we had relatives who were older and helped us go see them. I saw them in 81, 82 and 84 as a 9, 10 and 12 year old.
      All the young rock bands that came up in the 90s *LOVED* old VH....and they were mostly Gen X too.
      Chris Cornell (64, right on the cusp), Billy Corgan(67) , Dave Grohl (born 69) Taylor Hawkins (72), Jerry Cantrell (66) Zakk Wylde (67)....all gen x, all of spoken of how much they dug classic VH....and other celebs too like Adam Sandler (66) Cameron Diaz (72) and tons of other gen xrs
      Still never hear any major musicians say they love Van Hagar, except for some much younger folks, and even then you rarely hear famous rock bands cite Van Hagar as an influence....though they do cite Eddie's guitar work.

      I agree with you Dean. For myself, I didn't feel the need to compare what were two dynamic bands. If anything, "Van Hagar" was indicative of the maturation of Van Halen. Especially when it came to the musical & lyrical content. In short, Van Halen, regardless of which version, is and will always be one of the greatest bands in the history of the rock genre. Have a great day Dean....

    • @GlobalTubeTruth
      @GlobalTubeTruth 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      It's hard to believe people still believe their bullshit story about DLR leaving the band. In this video, Alex admits that they had a "toothache but got it extracted and replaced it with a gold crown". Does that sound like what someone would say after someone left or after they fired him?? DLR wasn't looking for a solo career. He never tried to get into acting back then. He wanted to make cool music videos and those assholes wouldn't go along with it because they had no fucking talent. It's amazing that they were able to fool so many people for as long as they did but it all caught up with them eventually. Now they're out of the business and completely irrelevant.
      If it wasn't for the DLR years, they would not even be worth remembering at all. Their insecurities were what destroyed every incarnation of that band from DLR to Gary Sharone. It was one total disaster after another. Now Sammy hates their guts too. VH brothers are total scumbags.

    To me Sammy will always be Montrose, and DLR Van Halen
    I saw the bands first ever concert outside of the LA club scene, in roughly 76/77
    They played at the Oakland Coliseum for Day on The Green. They opened the 6/7 band show at 10AM, and played for about 1/2 hour.
    The coliseum seats about 50K, but at 10AM, maybe there were 1K of us.
    I was about 100 feet from their tiny apportioned stage complete with Eddie's effects in a hollowed out WWII bomb.
    Nobody in the crowd knew who they were, but within the first five minutes, they were unforgettable.
    They opened with On Fire. I looked around the crowd. Nothing but teenage kids with our jaws dropped in awe. When their set was over, I remember thinking, 'what the hell was that!?! Screw the rest of the bands. Bring them back out.'
    Back then, there was only one magazine for guitar players...Guitar Player. You actually had to know how to read music.
    The following month, GP had EVH on the cover as the next Guitar 'God', complete with photos from the Oakland show.
    The next year, before the release of the second album, they played a dress rehearsal concert in San Jose. That was the last time I saw them live.
    Tickets were CHEAP back then.
    To me, Sammy will always be Montrose, and DLR Van Halen
