@@jayp3564 They shouldn't sell any case! The Pi is often used in the maker scene or by nerds who gladly craft their own! 😉
Some models as a blueprint on their website or on thingiverse should be enough!
And for those who do not have a 3D printer or a mill there are plenty options on the aftermarket (metal case) with *propper cooling* or online services and cafe's where you can order your printed model.
But it's obvious: they wanted to stay under 5 bucks. If you have extra wishes... make your own! (It could be fun. 😉 )

I wish I had seen this video earlier; I thought the supplied heatsink was too large and I went and I bought a set of 4 heatsinks (3 + 1 flat with rpi logo) about at 1.2$. CPU's heatsink was of a more reasonable size.
Unoftunately, the case wouldn't close with all 3 of them installed. So I took off the two that I had installed (gpu and usb heatsinks), and I installed the flat one, the one with the pi logo that I had deliberately left out to be installed last, on the gpu instead, to help the case to close without touching anything and still be able to heat off the gpu at least a bit.
Now, about that last comment about the ventilation missing, I bought a plastic hand driller and I carefully opened a small hole exactly above the pi logo on the case (white part). I think it worth the effort and it's still beatitul too.

It IS an afterthought at best and what irritates me most is that still, even after they admit through a product like this that the Pi4 is in dire need of cooling as a computer, they still insist in the "sprint-and-recover" use case for the Pi4, as if it's a smartphone. It's not, and it's not used as one. As a computer I put it through it's paces and I expect a - somewhat limited, sure but - constant performance, whether I do emulation, browsing or programming. Let's hope the next Pi will be designed with cooling from day one, if it actually needs it. The Pi 4 certainly does

    • @jimvonmoon

Also, will this work with the official Raspberry Pi 3 case?

5 bucks will also (alternatively) buy you a couple nice little 8-packs of RAM heat-sinks that are pure copper if you really want to keep it cool. :-) Pair that with this fan (and use more than 1 per pi, haha) and you'd likely see a much better improvement. Oh, and drill some sort of vent holes at the opposite end, haha. The hot air needs somewhere to go that's not inside the case!

Same, I just got my first pi, with this case included. And I'd like to know how far I can push it before modifying the case, and if I do modify it, where would the optimal holes be? Right above the fan? With some exit ones towards the back?

An ice tower even passively cooled will do a better job than this. The fan being directly detected in raspberry pi os is a cool feature though.

That case still needs an inlet and outlet to let the air flow properly.

You can cut a hole in the top to mount a 40mm fan.
