      You should get some rust converter and get going on the frame and spring hangers, before it gets too deep.

      This is hilarious I just purchased the "clapped out" truck featured in the eBay ad in your video. I saved up to purchase the truck and watched eBay hoping a good one would show up. I finally found one! These are good trucks and so long as folks understand its a workhorse not a racehorse you will not be disappointed. I bought it as my weekend escape vehicle and I am a fan of your channel. So I am pretty amused that this came up as the top search result when I was looking for CUCV videos on TH-cam.
      I love these old trucks I spent many days playing in the bed of my dad's truck. I digress. I had planned on doing a series of videos on my work to get one of these trucks back to working. I dont have a youtube channel per say and I'm not looking to be famous but I would like share information on what it takes to get one of these old trucks back up and running. Honestly I am scared I spent a lot of savings to make this happen but if my video helps just one person that is considering doing the same thing then all the effort of making the video is worth it.
      Thanks for the video and the laugh.

      Beautiful Looking truck,
      If I was Blessed to have a awesome truck like that,
      I'd paint inside/outside
      in O. D. Green,
      Then I'd paint outside in
      Official Army camouflage paint

    I have had my M1008 for 12 years now. This is a pretty good overview of CUCV life. Read up on hydroboost if you want one and join Steel Soldiers. I had some issues at first, but the ‘Dr.’ has been solid for sooo long. I take her in the woods and skid out logs all day long and then drive her an hour home. I have a couple of the trailers that go with these and they are amazing together. I am currently in the middle of de rustifying my recently purchased M1009. The K5!
    Love these. Wish mine looked as clean as yours! Long live the Squarebodies!

    Great review Luke you're right on of the specs and the Truck overview, I was a Member of the Nebraska Army National Guard From 86 thru 2012 and driven these Trucks over the years until the Army started phasing them out for HMMWV, they ride exactly as you stated it's a good utility truck, I love the old fashion bench seat of which is outdated by today's standard but comfortable.
    I was an 2nd Lieutenant, the Cavalry Troop I was assigned to in 1993 had a field training exercise (FTX) on a Saturday early spring near Mead Nebraska. During the past past 24hrs the weather it had been raining off and on, I took M1008 to the field and never got stuck anywhere on the training site, there was some deep ruts but 1008 plowed thru the clay, mud and Sand. I can attest they're rugged and a work horse in stock form, like Luke said if you can find one un molested and stock like his buy it at a reasonable price, I just may own one myself one day too✔

    It's awesome to see Moose back out on the road again! Such a great truck. I've had the pleasure of driving the D30 both here in the U.S. and overseas. Your buying one is a very sound decision and investment. Modifying a D30 really makes no sense. One of the easy mods we did for the summer sun heat was strung 550 paracord between the gun rack mounts and drape a woobie over the 550. That kept the sun from hitting the back of your neck. The truck was still an oven but your neck was prevented from sunburns. Thanks for sharing Moose with us, Luke.

    It is TIME for a MOOSE update. Thanks! Kudos on the maintenance to prevent oil leaks. Soldiers bond with the vehicles that carried them. I think about WW2 Willys Jeeps that saw life as 'farm tractors' in the early post-war years. Mules that would not die and long-time friends after.

    I have a 1984 k20 6.2 that my dad bought in 89. He took of the utility bed and put a flatbed on it. 78k original miles when I got it from him last year. Mainly sat parked on the ranch and used a couple times per year. I put 30 bales of alfalfa on her and she barely notices.Put some love, money, and a rustoleum paint job on her. Some new parts, Runs strong, sometimes cranks for a while to start. Only change will be to a spin on fuel filter. I was in stationed in Germany 88-90 and drove these and the Blazer. I was definitely the slowest on the Autobahn. No ac but didn't need it over there.

    Hello Luke, thank you for sharing this fine video. You own a piece of his history. Moose reminds me of my first truck. I put 185,000 miles on a 71Ford F100 long bed. 5 years after I sold it, I saw it being driven by a young man who had a trash hauling business. Moose is true classic. It is certainly intimidating. Take care and be safe. 🤗

    I have one in New Zealand; it's totally original. They are absolute beasts & mine has distinction- it was the Park Ranger's truck filmed in the Yogi Bear movie. It's in total original condition, right down to still carrying the US military tags. One day a buddy of mine got his 6 axle gravel tipper truck stuck axle deep in mud on a hillside; his partner's Terrano couldn't even get traction in 4WD & just slid all over the place. We hooked it up to Isoceles & pulled the lorry free, uphill & the CUCV M10008 hauled it free, with the front & rear diffs locked, in low-low, without ever exceeding 100RPM. Sadly I've been stuck in Indochina for almost 5yrs & the truck is garaged & cared for by the contractor who's truck I pulled free. After all this time, about the only thing I miss about NZ is my beloved truck- they eat Landcruisers for snacks! The only downside is that as it is rated with a (fully loaded & truck weight included) at 3.5 tonnes. It qualifies as a heavy commercial vehicle, which means on-road costs are high- $350NZD/PA for registration, it requires a 6 monthly Certificate Of Fitness, as opposed to a standard, local garage Warrant Of Fitness, which means it needs certification at a gov't testing station & I also have to pay Road User Costs on it's diesel usage. Would I part with it? Not in a thousand years; they're one of the best trucks ever built.

      @gonzomlynarczyk6446 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The 4.56 gears are a limitation in a diesel, but my truck does well up to 60 mph. Over that she gets angry. The issue with gear swaps is you have to go to the smaller gear carrier as well. Gets expensive. A Gear Vendors OD is a great option, but they cost more than I paid for the truck!

    Nice truck. And the way Luke takes care of his equipment I think that truck will continue to gain value over the years, especially among military vehicle enthusiasts. I think that is why they are more expensive when stock. If you are buying the military version you don't want a bunch of civilian mods changing it up.

  • @Leffe357
    @Leffe357 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    ok Luke, about the winter cold, get some rubber mats for your seats (all year) add a cheap closed cell foam pad as insulation at the bottom (12-15mm thick) for the winter check that it will not interfere with the pedals.
    plus your seat is vinyl, add a wool blanket for comfort

    If you put a cold air intake on it from the front of the truck where the civilian version connects to your air filter it will knock down the noise in the cab considerably. Throw on a hood insulation under the hood and it will be more than quiet enough to have a radio, cb, phone call.

    Great video about Moose. I do own a Red Sunfire Tacoma 2000, single cab, 2wd, standard 5 speed transmission, never been seriously serviced, engine or transmission never opened; it has 220000 miles on it, the only mod I have done is a double even flow muffler (it sounds really cool, strong and laud for a little guy, lol, just like my dog!) and it has low profile performance tires and rings installed by Discount Tires as the original aluminum wheels and BF goodrich tires were stolen by a neighbor to selling for scrap (could never prove it was him but right before disappearing from my yard he begged me to sell them to him! - that person has moved long ago now) This truck used to be my working vehicle when I was doing contracting work as a carpenter; its AC system is the best i have ever had in any car i owned, including more modern ones! it has gone everywhere and I have abused it in all forms and colors; it has a black removable camper on the bed and once I drove it from Florida to Nevada heavily loaded all over capacity, towing a large 10x8 trailer; weighted it on a truck stop scale and it gave me 11.000 pounds! which it is almost 3 times its weight! the only thing it did back then was to burn some transmission fluid. I would never get rid of it while I live; it sits in my drive way and people pass and ask if it is for sale; nope; it is a keeper and it has earned that through the years!

    One thing you do NEED to modify. Go to off-road design and get a steering box brace and frame brace/repair kit. It’s not a matter of if you will need it...

    • @05EVORS
      @05EVORS 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      yep ORD and DIY4X has alll the goodies for these. The frame brace is a goto 1st mod. Theres a company that makes a striker kit so the doors line up better and dont need to be slammed either lol. Keep new glows in it, and pour in fuel additive EVERY tank. The new diesel fuel is dry no more sulpher(thanks to epa) lubrication for the old mech rotary pumps its mandatory use additive. Pump loves cetane (octane for diesel) additive w lube. Have your pump rebuilt, have internal weights taken out she will run w more power. Had mine done in 2013. Wasnt cheap tho. These things are smog exempt even in California, swap in a cummins or an LS w long tubes here cops cant do anything they are 50 state smog exempt. Banks still sells the sidewinder turbo kit for em and they run NICE after that.

Ox locker for the front. Having a new canvas top built, putting a Wabasto heater in it. Body off to paint it, weld in some cab corners and it should be good to go.Hunting truck deluxe. Anybody looking for a 6.2 ,also have the 6.5 from my donor truck.?

      @@shaun4bigblocks993 The Duramax swap into the 80s Chevy square body requires exstensive floor and hump modifications. The Alison trans is no doubt better than the 4l-80, the Duramax better than the Cummins, meh, not so much. Anyway more fabrication than I had in mind, plus the 97Chevy with the 6.5 and 4l-80 was much, cheaper than even a wrecked Duramax. I think the 4l-80 will be fine, I'm not trying to build a monster truck, with an unlimited budget. I want to be married still when the project is done.

    I got lucky price wise & but it needed love, which it got. So historical insurance & plates makes it far more affordable to run. Mine is not my everyday driver, I have numerous vehicles. Great truck.

    Have you considered turning the truck into a portable camp. If you can find an Army surplus tarp or a canopy from a 2 & 1/2 ton truck, with a pipe frame over the bed and extra pipe frame off the back, you could make a great shelter. The truck bed has stake holes that you could fit wood into, drill a hole for the pipe frame and then stake down overhang. You could sleep in the bed and cook on the tailgate on plywood or Masonite. Extend the pipe frame off the back end for a cooking, sitting area and have a fire pit just outside. Line the bed with indoor/outdoor carpeting and maybe closed cell carpet insulation. Make a canvas door so the cover could be enclosed for the night. It would be fast setup and takedown. It shouldn't be too expensive if you can find a tarp or canopy on Army surplus. Some tent makers have DIY aluminum pipe frames. Even a stand alone patio canopy on the back end would work. I have the canvas from an old tent camper that I think could be used and made to work. Has screening for ventilation with zipper enclosures. Mice made a nest and holes that could be repaired easily. Might be able to find something similar online used.

    As you stated, not a good truck to be sitting in during a standstill delay on the toad, especially on a hot day, but a great truck when you are on a sketchy snow covered road.
    I wonder how it handles icy roads, and if you change to different tires in the winter?
    I might get one of those insulated aluminum sun blockers, a water heater insulated blanket, rigid foam roofing insulation, or something like that, and cut it out to fit the floor board, in order to block the cold.
    It would be easy enough to pick up, and shake off, or to remove when you did not want it there.
    Also, I am sure that Weathertech could make some custom floor mats.
    Since you maintain the truck, and drive like a sane person, Moose should live forever!
    Good Luck!

    In 1973, Dodge began developing militarized adaptations of their current civilian trucks. In 1976, the M880/M890 series was put into production under a large contract. For almost a decade the Dodges were referred to as "880s", "890s", or most commonly called "five-quarters". The term "CUCV" did not appear until the 1980s when GM was contracted to replace the M880/90s. The M8XXs were an attempt by the U.S. military to use commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) vehicles with minor modifications in non-combat roles.

I have to disagree with your top speed, on the autobahn I could bury the needle (90 mph) BUT it took forever to get there. Being on the autobahn in 90s, I had no choice but to floor it for safety sake. Glad, You mentioned the 24 volt system.

      lol... yeah sure you could... 3 speed auto with out a lock up converted and top gear being 1:1 with a 4.56 gear set and a governed motor at 3600rpm... truck will stop fueling before 90... of course if you think a blazer is a pick up... well... lol...

    I had these when i was stationed germany. As for speed if you take the governer off of it. It will get up and go. With the M1009 the speedometer needle would point straight down. So 85+ mph. Not bad with an army truck.

      M1009s have 3.08 gears. M1008s have 4.56 gears.
      The db2 injection pumps are governed at 3,200 rpm.
      You can't over rev it.
      What people do it turn up the fuel delivery inside the injector pump.

    It's best to self service these vehicles. If you own any kind of military vehicle, I highly suggest joining Steel Soldiers. You can find parts for a good deal, meet good people, and also get help on technical issues and problem solving as well as the tech manuals that is like a Hanes manual.
    These vehicles can be a pain to work on but also it's pretty self explanatory. I've owned a couple M35's and I do 99% of the work myself. I've rebuilt an engine in one due to a blown head gasket, transmission work, brakes, ect. Only thing I don't like doing are the brakes or anything that involves taking a tire off. The tires I have are 395's with run flats and combat rims so they are 500lbs each and each lug nut is torqued to 360 ft lbs. Other than that these machines are a real blast to drive and cruise around in.

    JTLYK Toyota dorked the drivetrain in the Tacoma starting with the 17 Model . There are MANY 17's for Sale with 10 thou and fewer miles . They constantly hunt for the right gear and are almost ALWAYS stuck in too high of a gear . I actually thought they'd fixed that with the 19's , guess not . I had a 82 Hilux NON - 4 WD while in Id , Ca and here in Mi . That thing had the R20 engine and I took it anywhere I had clearance that a full sized 2 wd could go, and a LOT of X's more places because of tree spacing and the wt of my truck . I have a Tundra now that I would not trade for anything . I totalled that 82 on the way to work one morning , hit ice and rolled it ..... sad day !! Great review with the positives and negatives for Moose and her siblings :) ..bg

    I got my 1008 via military auction for $1700. When I picked it up it had less than 20K miles on it and had been fully serviced before it went to disposal. I drove it home with a full tank of diesel. Because I got it directly from the military I am the original owner on the title. I left it mostly stock. I put running boards on it, tilt steering wheel and suburban bucket seats with center console. I love this truck and would never consider selling mine. Just a FYI on a couple of other features on the truck. The original military paint job is called CORC and it is radar resistant. It's the same paint used on military aircraft to prevent radar lock-on so you are fairly safe from speed traps. The second feature is the stealth mode for the lights. If you get some night vision goggles it might make an interesting video. Just flip the switch on the dash and you go dark.

      .... CARC.. and it is "Chemical Agent Resistant Coating" not radar anything... and um... the black out lights don't use night vision LOL? They are just really dim lights?

    • @michaelgoodwin712
      @michaelgoodwin712 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mattlane2282 Do your homework. "CARC is designed to be easily decontaminated after exposure to liquid chemical agents, and the coating also is resistant to water, weather, hydrocarbons and acids. It has an infrared signature that makes coated equipment harder to detect. Component A is a polyester resin and Component B is an aliphatic isocyanate curing agent." And while I am educating you on military paint the military designation OD does not mean Olive Drab It means Over Dirt. Using OD paint you don't need to prep the vehicle before you paint it.
      The blackout lights on the vehicle are designed to be used in conjunction with night vision devices, If you need a tutorial on how night vision devices amplify light emitted from "really dim light" resources I will be happy to write up a simplified explanation for you. Blackout lights "don't use night vision" they are used to aid soldiers that wear night vision devices while operating the vehicles at night. That's the way we did it in the Marine Corps.

      @@mattlane2282- Since you have difficulty understanding basic concepts and facts I must assume you are a Democrat. Why else would you make a big deal out of my original post. I don't normally waste time with the benighted but I will make one LAST attempt to break through your mental issues. Please refer back to my original post if you are still confused.
      Paint - I was referring to speed traps not missiles. If you have this paint on your truck you might get out of a ticket by using the government description to call into question the accuracy of the police radar guns. Dispute it if you want but that government description got me out of a speeding ticket. Does it really screw up a radar gun? Who cares it worked for me. Now don't try to tell me you were in the courtroom and saw something different.
      Black out lights - Not a new concept. They did not originate with this truck. They have been around for thousands of years. They are even mentioned in the Bible. The black out lights produce a little light and the whole purpose of a night vision device is to amplify any available light. I had a Starlight scope in the mid 60's in Nam so yea people had night vision in the 80s LOL back at ya. What do the 80s have to do with this post anyway. My post was about here and now on planet Earth. It had nothing to do with whatever planet your from.

You talk about turning on the "stealth mode" lights then talk about night vision... stick to taking orders...
