Jaco...my student/friend back in 1968. He had been a drummer with a rock band in Hollywood, Fl....but, now...he wanted to learn bass music. 1st, it was on an acoustic 3/4 Kay Bass, but after he moved in with my family in late 1968....he switched to electric bass. Later, living about a mile from my home in Lighthouse point, he in southern Deerfield Beach , we were in constant connection....especially when his band was invited to Havana, he got confused as to how to properly play a TRIBUTE to the USA. So, we rehearsed several American Classics, and he finally picked one....I think it was "America The Beautiful"....solo on the electric bass. It smoked the Cubans!!
Hiram's Solo: 1st sequence - groovy jazz funk, 2nd sequence - elephant in the exosphere, 3rd sequence - crack cocaine. There is no better recorded guitar solo than this.
keep listening to this...as it's so full of invention and ability! Jaco and Hiram lock-step and then drifting off into counter point, ethereal pleasure and creativity... they're having a blast in Heaven for sure!
Hiram was a smokin' soloist back then. Saw him with Bob James and he ran down the center aisle toward the stage, playin' the hell out of the guitar and rolled up onto the stage never missing a beat!! Nice to see Bob had him back for a reunion on a recent album.
can really tell who's a bassist round here ;) this is an amazing recording, everyone is on fire. the Guitar on the head and the three sections of the solos are refreshing.
I LOVE Jaco! I'm wondering why after TWELVE years this finally showed up? I thought I've seen/heard all of his vids/live stuff but things keep coming up!
Wow, can you believe the distorted sound of his bass beginning at 10:47, KILLER, it's hard to believe I recorded this on my Sony Walkman. I guess if this is a bootleg then I'm a bootlegger, HA!
Yes you can. I recorded this on my Sony Walkman at the club Seventh Ave. South. The date was December 13th, 1985. Five years later I put it on a CD titled Pastorius Live in New York City, subtitle "PUNK JAZZ"
I'm quite cynical about people on the internet who say they're a certain someone, but something tells me this one is the real deal. Nice to cyber meet you, Neil. Your recordings are pure gold...as you most surely know.
Well, you were so polite in asking for the date, I thought I'd fill you in. Actually in the 32 years since I recorded it, and 27 years since I shared it with the public, I have not entered into any public discussions regarding it. I agree with you, "pure gold," where I disagree, "they're not my recordings, they're yours."
I heard him do "Teen Town" with Weather Report. Recently I heard Marcus Miller perform it and he added some other things to it and did it a lot cleaner, but with as many harmonics. I've tried to play it and found it difficult if even for the entrances. I'm always sloppy. Practice, Practice!
I checked out your channel and I was surprised: NO VID of you being better than Jaco! I was highly expecting that, you should do some uploads, I can't wait! greetings
ive always liked this whole album 'punk jazz' alot---so I looked at the musicians on it---lol it turns out my fiance's 'sperm donor' (runaway deadbeat father) was the sax player on this album lol- small world.
I find these later recordings without Zawinul's ridiculous synth patches most satisfying. He still has his chops (how could he lose them?). Zawinul was great but just was too early before the dual oscillator polyphonic synth had come of age. Thin, whiny. He knew what was coming but he was ahead of the curve.Tragic. On all accounts. God bless these last men.
Love the drumming guitar. Jaco is from somewhere else ! My ears are fuckn happy Holy shit. Set aside the stupid goat thing. Jaco is an absolute master. Mutha Fucker as Miles say!
wat does gays have to do with it... surely u could come up with a intelligent response to the dislike bar... normally people would say something that is relevant to the video
SundaraYoga and toretaso, can you two do better? I'm not sayin "pick" a better player. I'm saying " Can you beat them playing?" If so , then we all would know who you are.....(nuff said)
Better than Jaco; (at being 'Jaco'ish) me Gary Willis Sean Malone Michael Manring Thys Vlaszaty I could go all day. Just pretty much anyone who can play harmonics, fast rolls, and fretless slides can be Jaco worthy

Recorded 1985 !
Jaco was the most precious soul to touch a bass. Now, that being said, can we have a date for this performance, PLEASE?
Yes you can. I recorded this on my Sony Walkman at the club Seventh Ave. South. The date was December 13th, 1985. Five years later I put it on a CD titled Pastorius Live in New York City, subtitle "PUNK JAZZ"
yes

No one smokes a fretless bass like Jaco did.
Any bassist should listen to Jaco to learn how being more than "a" bassist but being "the" bassit
I meant Hiram Bull-lock! Lagrene is on the European gigs.

Metal and codices ocults gypsy music age 1800...
aww...that disappoints me a bit. but then do something even better than doing something better than jaco and film it, maybe? that would be so cool. :)
I do better things with my time. Like writing music and improvising basslines to classical songs
Better than Jaco; (at being 'Jaco'ish)

Gary Willis
Sean Malone
