I’m into my fair share of hobbies and I can honestly say that the comic community here on TH-cam is by leaps and bounds the most supportive. It’s amazing to see and thrilling to be a small part of.
Why we like characters really resonates with me. My obscure favorite book/character is totally derived from my childhood opinion of "wow, that looks cool!" Great shout out too! I checked out Nate's channel and you're totally right. He's nailing youtube from the start. #fam
I was actually thinking about the Wolverine book that you showed a few videos ago. It’s really interesting thinking back on what attracted me to a character as a kid vs now but the underlying feeling of “heh… neat” hasn’t ever gone away.

Well, if we're handing out recommendations of runs you need to read...
Denny O'Neil's run on The Question will go down in history as the most underappreciated (not underrated because everyone who gets their hands on it falls in love) comic run ever. It takes a relatively unknown hero like The Question and literally and literarily breaks him down so that everything that comes before the run is kinda moot, making this a reboot of sorts. It's grimy noir fiction at its best, yet still manages to rope in classic DC characters like Batman, Lady Shiva, Riddler and even other forgotten ones like Richard Dragon (the character that Marvel ripped off to make Iron Fist). I've yet to meet one single person who doesn't walk away from that run with their dome completely flipped.
I was really hoping you would comment! The only things I know about the question are what you’ve shared on your channel and I think you can learn a lot about who someone is by the favorites that they have. I’ll definitely check O’Neil’s run out!
I agree with wanting ALL comic book movies/shows to be great! For grails, though, I consider a grail to be THE book that I want to own above any other book. How attainable it is doesn't really factor into that for me, mainly because MOST books are attainable if it truly is your collecting goal. I also dig how much support there is for each other in this community and on this platform! Great video, man! Keep 'em coming!
I think I agree with you. Like regardless of attainability, my GRAIL Cap 1. But I’d be ecstatic to own Avengers 4.
Agree on the "grail" stance, that there should be only 1, but I think that "1" should be up to the individual. A Batman fan doesn't have to have Tec 27 be his/her grail if that person also happens to be a Neal Adams fan; for that person, the grail could be Batman 227 (or any other Adams/Bat book).
I can totally understand that. Like if the new X Men team is your favorite, your grail is probably GSX #1. Everyone gets to pick their own collecting grail.
Love that you're paying it forward. There's an endless sea of comic books that are worth reading. If you're looking at more DC stuff, I'd go with some of the mini series like The Golden Age, Batman The Cult, and Justice League of America: The Nail. These are easily digestible as they are shorter story arcs (two of them are also Elseworlds, DC's 'What if?' line).

Also, I think it's worth mentioning that while I'm sure many viewers were ushured to your channel by MON comics and comic rack, some of us found you organically. I discovered them along with Ricky and several others through YOU. Like it or not, you're an influencer in this community now. Those channels are getting new subscribers bc of you and I'm sure Nate is going to grow exponentially bc of your influence.

I have long used the term grail in two forms, little g and big G. My Grail is Startling Comics 49. Where as my grails are really big keys like ASM 1, Avengers 1, Brave&Bold 28, etc. These are more significant books than other big keys such as the first appearance of Galactus.
I don’t think that’s a bad way of looking at it! Personally, I’m on the “one grail per collector” train, but everyone gets to decide how and what they want to collect. Really wish I had made that more clear. I might have to revisit this point in the future.
@@LettuceComics I have one grail at a time, once I acquire it, there must be a new Big Boy book. Where as my true Grail, is unlikely to be acquired any time while I still support my kids.
John Byrne's run on Uncanny X-Men is classic. From the X-Men's tangle with Magneto, first time seeing Alpha Flight, to my personal favorite, the Proteus Saga, to the Hellfire Club and Dark Phoenix Saga and the apocalyptic Days Of Future Past, Byrne's work(and Claremont) is captivating and special. Check it out.....
We do love John Byrne! His run on Cap is great and I really want to read his and Claremont’s X Men run
Stumbled into this channel from youtube recommendations since I'm trying to get into collecting comics after growing up on comic book cartoons/movies/video games. I agree on the misuse of the term grail. People in many other hobbies throw it around for random stuff. I've even seen people say they have multiple grails which is such a funny concept. #fam

Feels a bit weird being told what my grail comic is supposed to be, but I get you are trying to make a point. It should still be subjective to the comic collector. My "grail" for many years was Detective Comics 359 because I wanted that more than anything else. Would I rather have Detective Comics 27? Yes! Because then I could sell that and pay off my house...and buy a 9.8 Detective Comics 359 😂. So, what happens when someone sells their soul and obtains their "grail"? Can they have a "new grail"? To your point, I don't use the term "grail" loosely, as I did when I first started to really collect as a bigboy. Probably because most were using that term.

I totally get your point! I was trying to make a point but I was being a bit dramatic. Everyone gets to pick what their most sought after book is. For instance, even though my “grail” is Cap 1, Avengers #4 is still the book at the top of my list so it may as well be my grail book. Honestly, like you, I’d sell a Cap 1 in a heartbeat. I get to say I owned it and then all my financial problems completely disappear for the foreseeable future haha. So happy you decided to stop by!

My favorite character is Lobo. At first I liked that he was a violent bad ass...
Today Lobo represents freedom and no blindly pledging allegience to one side or the other on anything. Life is nuanced and is not black and white.
For sure! Cap started as a buff dude with a frisbee and then turned into a critique of American Reality when faced with American Exceptionalism.
Even if my grail maybe an AF 15 I’m gonna call my ASM 129 a grail and there is nothing you can do to stop me!! 😂
A series that I have not been able to put down that I’d HIGHLY recommend is Saga by Brian Vaughn and Fiona Staples. It won a Eisner so I know I’m not the only one that loves it!

(I’m going to do the same thing Captain America #1 and Avengers #4) I’ll just always know in the back of my mind that the real grail lies multiple tax brackets out of reach 😂.

Gotta read the first swamp thing series by len wein amd bernie wrightson. Wrightson did the art on the first ten. It's super good. So good in fact it inspired me to collect issues 1-10 of swamp thing.

Good video. You made some good points. My favorite has always been Green Lantern. Most likely because it seemed more plausible. For a superhero I mean of course. I like both Marvel and DC. Both have good and bad. You should read Kingdom Come, Hulk future imperfect, Earth X, watchmen, infinity gauntlet. Some of my fav stories. #fam

great video, bro. i am the same way as you, i want gunn's dcu to be good but, the superman movie is already making the mistakes the mcu started to do by bringing in all these super hero characters into the first new dcu movie. hoping it will still turn out good but, they should take those hero characters out of it. #FAM

Bro, people always need to pick sides. Like you, I don't agree. Yes, I myself ha e my favorites, but I do want to see good DC and Marvel movies. I love good stories and good art. Do yourself a favor and read Marvels and Kingdom Come. Stories are both terrific, and the art is amazing!

I will always be a DC guy. But man, I cannot deny the awesomeness of a good story or a good time. My family rewatched the Infinity War Avenger's movies and they are still so good and hold up so much. I'm not as attached to the characters or the universe, but I LOVE those films. We're allowed to have favorites, but it shouldn't prevent us from branching out. Marvels and Kingdom Come are great recommendations.

Brother this is your sanctuary. I’m a grown ass man and I still love 6 foot tall turtles dressed as ninjas beating the crap out of anything and everything.
If you can track down collections of the original Mirage run, or are willing to pay for the issues. 80s independent black and white turtles just hit so different. It's no wonder they spawned the franchise they've become.

@@LettuceComics There's different levels. you have personal grails something you covet and have or are striving for, your holy grail that one that you would die to have but its just not realistic in all honesty, then you have grails which are typically higher priced coveted pieces the average collector are envious you have. That's typically the belief or consensus in most collecting circles or at least comics and funko
