Paw paw last year I showed your video on making your wine to a friend. He made 1 bottle in his empty spare bed room. When it was done he let his wife try it. She asked how he made it. So he told her... Next day after work he came home and found 30 bottles of juices from Aldies and lots of sugar... She SAID You git some work to do. So he made 30 bottles and got tbem all put in a broken fridge with a not DONT TOUCH till the due date... His wife and her girl friend won't stay away from there house now....🤦🤣🤣🤣😂🤣🤣

PawPaw, you started me off making wine at home a little over a year ago. I have come a long way since then, becoming quite good at it and more advanced. So why am I watching? Because you'll always have a place in my heart. Happy Holidays to you and yours!

PawPaw, I wanted to share something with you
I got into wine making just a few short years ago.
I have crushed fruits, used complex recipes, and I have also just added yeast and sugar to store bought juices.
And as a younger person, I have learned what I am realizing is the most important thing about the hobby:
If it tastes good, drink it.

I got a 3qt jug of 100 percent Welch's grape juice, scalded an old 1gal. glass wine jug, poured a (whole pack ) pack of fast acting bread yeast.
Today is the second day & its foaming like crazy!!! I'm shore glad you put your experiment on Y.T.
You remind me so much of my relatives in South Alabama.
My wife got sick & wanted me to bring her home to be buried by her brother and mom, so now I'm living in Southern Missouri, the Ozarks.
I love your song Doing It Cheap.
You're called Paw Paw, my Grandmother in Dothan Alabama always had me call her Mumzy.

Started a double batch of Welsh's grape a few days short of 4 weeks now. Looked at it once at 3 weeks and the surface resembled a stale cup of coffee. Using PawPaw's recipe as I have done in the past. At 4 weeks I will most likely rack it for the first time, then refrigerate it to stop any further fermentation. Vessel I will rack it to has a spigot about 5/8 inch above the bottom of vessel to allow for sediment. Depending on how it looks I may rack it one more time and then enjoy it. Temperature in house is a constant 76 degrees and the plastic bottles are fermenting inside a cardboard box in the closet in the dark. This method seems to work for me. But I consider myself an expert on wines that sell for $4.99 or less. Thanks Paw Paw.

Hope that works out for you paw. If it runs too hot, you can always try the fish tank heater in a jug of water and snuggle up your whine jugs around it . You can dial the heat where you want it that way. Just wrap a old blanket or towel around the jugs and your good to go.

My temperature only runs from the high 80's to the mid 90's year round and my brewery is a small refrigerator that I keep the door ajar to prevent mold. Thanks for the tip about the air causing vinegar. You know that wine is valuable ....like cash! No kidding ! It's as good as cash for trading for stuff 'round here....and NO TAXES !!!

    Absolutely love your videos!
I recently made my first batch of wine using the welchs grape juice you showed.. I followed you step by step and it turned out great, but you are right.
The hardest thing about it was staying away from it. I just happened t have a couple of those fancy air locks that came with some fermenting supplies I bought for making kraut and other fermented veggies, so I used the air locks on the wine, and since I couldn't wash inside that air lock, I cleaned it as best I could then I used Vodka in it for the liquid in the goose neck part, instead of water, thinking the vodka would sterilize the inside of the air lock where I couldn't get to it.
I swear it was totally mesmerizing to sit there and watch the bubbles constantly coming up thru that air lock!

I did a batch with Mango Tangerine from Aldi. It didn't ever bubble. I actually gave up on it and racked all my other bottles. Bought a month later after I had forgotten about it I was making a new batch and it was in the box I use to keep light out. So I smelled. Smelled fantastic. So we drank it. It was way stronger than the other stuff and was taste. Everyone loved it...

Hiya PawPaw , I made for 1st time a batch of grape and cranberry a couple days days ago that's bubbling good in a closet hoovering around upper 60's to low 70's . After hearing what your daddy said I put a small electric space heater in there. It's not turned up as high as a July black car in summer time but thought I would experiment for less than a month for it to finish.
I follow your advice more than anyone. Thats First time I've heard of real high temp to get it scootchin along quicker.
Love your shirt and service in armed forces.

Since I watched this video two years ago, I have been making my wine in my cooler all the time. I did find out that my heating pad needed to be put on high setting, since my cooler is in the basement..... I have found out that it still works better to just let the wine go for 5 to 6 weeks. I make about five bottles at a time.... I need to start my cooler/heating pad wine pretty soon. Don't forget the towel to seperate heating pad from touching bottles..... Bottles closer to pad may be a few degrees warmer, so every week or so I rotate the bottles carefully to equal out the heat in bottles....

I just keep my wine yeast in the fridge (closed with a paperclip then in a baggie) and use it - so far so good! One packet is good for 4 bottles of juice with Pawpaw's recipe. I have had bread yeast (purchased in bulk) in my freezer for years! Works fine! Just saying... ❤
P.S. cranberry watermelon is my latest experiment, pretty good! Cran cherry is my fav.

    • @DoingItCheap
      @DoingItCheap  3 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Keep in mind I am dealing with a lot of newbies that may or may not know how to store the yeast. At $1.14 for a 3 packet strip of yeast, it is not worth the risk for the first time user. I have to make my instructions as fool proof as possible for the novice. With my method, the only true variable is the age of the yeast when a batch fails to work off.

Pawpaw if a guy who is using the metric system can make this for a few years now, I guess the recipe is easy enough :) I've tried several juices and it never went wrong. The orange juice was a kind of a fun project, because of your reaction :) And I agree it isn't a wine to enjoy, but to get drunk. It taste more like orange juice with a decent amount of gin in it (well a kind of).
In the next couples of days I'm gonna make a few batches, because we have a few new rules to deal with. We are now in a so called 'partial lockdown' and the bars are closed at 20:00 hours and because of that you can't buy alcohol after that in the supermarket (they are afraid that people are moving from the bars to the supermarkets and get drunk at the streets). I guess they don't get it, because when you leave a bar at 19:50 you still can get some alcohol at the supermarket and get drunk at the streets too. In other words, it is smarter (besides the costs) to make your own wine, so you don't have to worry about the time :)

We have just gone through our winter and what I did to keep my wine at a constant temp was to put them on an electric blanket and wrap them up with a towel or just covered them all with a large blanket. My temp was a constant 21 degrees C or 72 F. I have about 160L-200L going at any given time in 20L or 25L buckets all of which are fruit, flower or veg wines. Happy brewing.

Since I saw few of these videos about homemade wine, I just forgot about the moonshine (rakiya here in the balkans) and I was drinking moonshine with 50%abv every day for two and a half years. This wine of yours with the quart, cup, quarter teaspoon is my new love since I tried it yesterday. I'm gonna leave the moonshine alone. Hugs from North Macedonia

Hello Paw Paw , I did the wine just like you said and omg it’s sooooo goood . I put the wine in my closet where it’s dark and cool , so I put a blanket around the jugs and waited 4 weeks . Did exactly what you said and it was awesome , did one grape and one white peach and white grape . I am not sure which one I like the best ! Didn’t peak or nothing , just forgot about it , by the way it read 20 percent. Will be doing ,more and keep you updated. Have a great day , catch you later

Your comment reflects exactly why I tell people to try it my way first before you go and start changing all kinds of things and then you can't figure out why it didn't turn out good !!

Things are so expensive now I buy half my wine and make half my wine. It takes time but it's so much cheaper. Watch the strength though 💪
    Happy drinking 😎🍷

Love your videos. My first wine was really a mistake. I did everything “wrong”! I put it under my kitchen table and really DID forget it. That was in August. It’s now October. I just thought about it yesterday. Yep, I got wine. Really, really, really sweet wine. It’s very syrupy. I think it will be good on pancakes. It’s Elderberry. Yummm

I just found out about this yesterday (12:50AM here in Alabama) and I spent all day watching your wine making videos! I will be making me a few batches soon. I can't wait! And yes I paid attention and can do simple math. 1 quart (or Liter), 1 cup, and 1/4 teaspoon. I don't get what is so hard... Hell people could use a calculator or even damn GOOGLE for crying out loud. Those other 'Morons' must be using that new math they are teaching in schools nowadays or something. Thank you PawPaw :)

@@sharonbyars8910 I'm actually doing that now. Had a bottle of Pure Leaf sweet tea sitting around. Depending on how this one turns out I may throw some honey in with the next batch.

    Paw paw.
Since cranberry juice is so tart you will need to use more sugar than usual. I recommend 1 3/4 or two cups of sugar instead of 1 1/2
That Cranberry/Cherry is GOOD. My cranberry/Cherry will be gone tomorrow night.
I also have about three gallons of Prickly pear wine. the Latin name for the prickly pear cactus is Optuna Ficus Indica. Scientists has found several benefits of prickly pear cactus.
It’s high levels of Betalains it helps
    Lower inflammation
    Lower blood pressure
And help diabetics, and pre diabetics.
Prickly pear juice has very little suga in it so your will need about 50-75% more sugar than usual

I like the way my cranberry turned out. My one cup per quart took the tartness out and left the nice taste of cranberry.

Paw don't waste your yeast. Store it in the fridge and it will keep for at least 3 months. I forgot about yeast and was still good after 4 months.

I refuse to risk a batch of wine trying to save eights cents worth of yeast for a month.

I can respect that. I just finished the video and using the Styrofoam box is genius... Living in Scotland it's cold here most of the year so I'm gonna start using your styro trick. So I have to thank you for saving me some money on heating.

    • @DoingItCheap
      @DoingItCheap  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

If you don't have a heating pad, a low wattage light bulb should suffice, but make sure the wine is hidden from the brightness.

I just setup an insulated food bag with a seedling heat pad. It's only been a few days, but I can hear the juice bubbling like crazy through the bag. This is the first time I tried this. I have a feeling it might be finished early.
