- “If you want it, you can get it,” is what Rashod Bacon hopes to instill in people of color who might see the world of cars as out of reach; unobtainium. He wasn’t born into money or power but made his own way and is now trying to inspire others while documenting his journey with vehicles.
[CARISMA is our show about the connections between enthusiasts and their cars. See the full playlist: • CARISMA ]
Bacon is an LA native who has the city in his blood. Like many, he was attracted to the freedom and style that the right car can unlock. He casually started an Instagram account, Motoring While Black, to keep his personal feed from being overrun with pictures of his GTI ... but has since evolved it to be a catalyst for connecting with and inspiring other people of color to get into the car scene, while showcasing those who came before him.
The car featured in this video, a BMW 1600 running a straight-six from an E30, is his first vintage machine. The inspiration for the motor swap came on one of his very first drives with the thing when the original engine blew up.
Since then he's been tuning it, refining it, and driving the hell out of it.

Hey guys I motor while white, and I drive a black car , and I drive it pretty hard, does that make me racist ?
That title though , a car person is a car person 🤣 got green skin, big eyes .....antenna? I have never seen where that mattered
@@fayobam_mech_tronics are you kidding? Car culture is dominated by wealthy white men with conservative and often discriminatory political and social beliefs.
Exactly...I know there are division for year/make/model/country of origin. Never race, ethnicity
Man i was trying to figure out what the title meant at first - a black motor? Like a Toyota beams? Black top SR?
Took me a while to figure out the actual meaning was racial???
Wtf, how is this remotely relevant to a car enthusiast, unsubscribed.
I was going to watch the video because I like 2002s and car stories, but I won't because of the race baiting title.
@@ghost21501 it's not a race-baiting title, it's the interviewee's brand/social media handle.
@richardharrold9736 I wouldn't know that because I didn't watch it because of the race baiting "handle," apparently.
@@ghost21501 just read the description. It's not baiting, it's self-expression. The guy identifies with his cultural heritage, what's wrong with that? Car culture is dominated by rich old straight white men.
Watched it and when he gets into the "George Floyd"/ "My Blackness"- I turned off. I grew up on military bases all over, in the US & abroad. I'm mixed race, dad is Choctaw/Chickasaw Indian mom is Norwegian...tired of the "We are under represented/oppressed/not seen" division in the US.
@@olikat8 you don't have to be a supporter of Floyd to find the eruption of racial conflict that followed alarming.
*Being from the ABCDEFGHIJKLMNOPQRSTUVWXYS community, I feel under-represented in The Drive featured videos. Can you fix this please*
As a disabled Latinx transsexual who is married to a two spirit gender queer furry , I echo this sentiment! Do better, The Drive!
You don’t even know man being from the z community it’s really sad to see these videos with no culture and inclusivity
@@austinpowers6260 Yes yes Austin, I feel your pain 👍
@@margrietwubs3028 What I do know is that being from the "Z" community is bad news ... they're always last !!!
Yeah- my dad is an American Indian...where my peoples at? Sweet baby Jezzuz, I just want want to walk away every time things go down this road with "STFU, nobody makes a deal of it but people in that mindset of victimhood" in my mind
Motoring while black ? Ugh what a cringe title.
Attention is a hell of a drug, right?
That's all DEI is about, embracing victimhood. From my experience a lot of car guys aren't woke, so this probably won't go over well. Then again it drives engagement so the TH-cam algorithm might reward them for it
@@austinpowers6260automotive media is very woke though. From big corporate channels like this one pushing race garbage, to small independent channels like RCR, which pushes lgbt degeneracy and furryism to medium channels like Smoking Tire with their EDS shitlib nonsense
@@austinpowers6260 speak for yourself. Plenty of left-wingers are car enthusiasts too. By American standards I'm far left, but I have three BMWs with a total of twenty-eight cylinders.
@@austinpowers6260 also, Motoring While Black is this guy's brand, his Instagram handle etc. So it's obvious to use it.
The title is refencing to his brand. Yall didn't care when it was about the white dude in a wheelchair, but when someone wants to talk about the black identity in the car world yall freak out?
Motoring while black? Yeah Drive, divide the world some more.
The Drive 🚘
Worst video ever 😂😂😂😂
@@arivera845 hardly. A very sincere, genuine seeming bloke with a real love of cars.
Dude you are spot on about feeling like your in a movie.
My love for BMWs and being a BMW owner come from my love for Ary@n race since I am an Indian and I also put red Swast!k on my car as auspicious sign, does it make it me rac!$t ? 😂😂😂
I used to drive a 2002, unrestored. I miss that car….
You sir, have good taste in cars.
Who built hell you put the motor in . Mana ? Cars
Why do you need to bring the colour of your into this? Narcissistic much?
Down vote this crap👎
@@KellBC1 because he feels a connection with his cultural identity and feel it defines part of what he is? Why shouldn't he be permitted to express that?

What a cringe title, I had to read it couple of times couldn't believe my eyes Jesus wept 💀
@@Tomislav_B. it's the interviewee's brand and Instagram handle.
I like the car it looks nice and it’s kind of sad the stuff that is in the comment section of this video. The owner of the car Rashad he did not have to mention his upbringing he should’ve just told us about this nice BMW and the other BMW that he owns you didn’t have to mention about the ghetto because everybody stereotypes us Black people as coming from the ghetto and being poor. Not All of us Black people do not come from the ghetto. There are some that come from upper middle class or in the rich category. But I will say I like the BMW that he has put together and it’s nice I like it. Well, I hope this makes sense but I’m tired of watching all these different videos of everybody that’s black comes from the ghetto and we do not come from the ghetto, not all of us.
Grew up on military bases all over the US & overseas. It was a whole mix of people. It was always a judgement of good or bad, not "Oh, they are this or that."
Thats a great swap
Love the understated, great drivetrain, very cool car 👍🏼
Proud to call Rashod a good friend, he's a true enthusiast and ambassador for not only his community but vintage car ownership in LA! Love this feature.
You totally ignored LGBTHDTV community, your transphobia is showing!!!
Lol, all the people complaining about the title should watch the video. Because "Motoring in Black" is the name of Rashods project. So the title is just fitting.
...then he goes into the spiel on "George Floyd & blackness..." I think that's where people are fed up. I've never been to a show or gathering divided by race, ethnicity, religion, sex- year, make, model, country of origin, yes- but nothing more
Motoring while black, how stunning and brave
@@Tomislav_B. being a black car guy in the very white dominated classic car community is unusual, to say the least.
@@richardharrold9736 maybe not typical, true. But what about East Indian? American Indian? Why do we go down this road of dividing? Rashod seems like a good guy, but the soap box speech is superfluous and preachy
@@olikat8 it would certainly be good to see indigenous Americans being represented. There is no comparison, though, between the often privileged, highly educated and high-earning Asians who are probably the largest minority in American car culture, and the Afro-Caribbeans descended from slaves.
