It's brilliant how they covered the incident. I remember a story from the original Toronto production where one of the Angel's supporting rods broke while descended, and Colm Wilkinson as the Phantom was stuck with no way to get down.
There was a video of this particular scene that posted here as well, in which the lasso broke shortly after Erik put it on Raoul, resulting in the latter sing while lying on the floor.
The magnetic portcullis. My friend, Andrew Varela, was the phantom in the US tour while the original production was on. He said this same thing happened to him.
Good thing the Phantom has a magnetised portcullis as a backup to the Punjab Lasso! Seriously though, this was sooooo hard to watch! That five minutes must have seemed like an ETERNITY for everyone involved! (No scene transitions, no other way/s of making the scene "work", etc).
WOW! Thanks for posting this - one of the best POTO bloopers!! Who knew that Raoul has a magnetic personality!!! Joe handles this perfectly!!! But how does a candle release a magnet? I would have preferred if the Phantom yanked him by the arm and threw him across the stage!
The candle is what is typically used to “burn” or release the lasso. It’s safe to say everything in the lair is magical in a sense. He probably just wanted to keep a remnant of the original scene.
Like everything in Phantom there’s a alternate version that you learn when you join the cast there’s a manual that lists all of the various ways you are supposed to cover for technical issues. I’ve been in Phantom a few times and my most recent time the throne failed which is never a good thing. I feel bad for the audience who have to just watch you sneak out from under the cape and run away it’s not quite as impactful. The explanation of the portcullis lasso issue officially is that it’s electrified and pulls raoul onto it but for me it’s a bit silly especially when the phantom then uses the candle to free him.
@@AmintaDaxbut do you know why it’s rushed? The virus had nothing to do with the length of the show and it’s upsetting me. They changed so much! Also why does the title song begin with a loud straight chord. It used to be very subtle and staccato with Michael Crawford and Sarah brightman! 😢
I LOOOOOOVEEEEEEEEE THE PART WHERE JOE IMMEDIATILY KNEW WHAT JON WAS DOING. I mean he did not know why but he just went with it and acted fast 👋
Probably rehearsed or discussed when something doesn't work

Whoever plays Christine here. I adore her acting choices here!

This scenario is rehearsed with the cast.

lol the bride looks like Robin William's AI here
Amazing. Please ❤ all ask of you ❤❤❤❤❤
Oh this is so strange. Do you know what happened?
I guess they lose it, but actors did't know about it and they still need to keep acting.
At least they recreated the final lair that Gerard Butler did with Raul on the gate instead of the lasso
They managed to recover the blip well!
Thank you so much, Frances! Much appreciated! 🥰
That happenwd when I saw it in May! What date is this performance?
Thank you so much Frances
Thank you!!
I went to watch the show on may and the same thing happened 😂 Maybe was it the same day ?
No lasso?! Is it a health and safety thing again?
it looks like it’s just a prop/set malfunction!
Finally this happening in a modern day POTO (The first one captured was I believe the one with Ian Jon Bourg)
Why's it feel so rushed
@gemtachataj6119 It's rushed since the reopening after the big c.
The whole show is now faster/shorter. I hate it too. :(
Yes I felt the ending to be very rushed when I saw it in London this year too

I literally would be laughing I be like oh crap lol
