Who said that a bass is mainly to accompany other instruments? Charlie created an entirely new musical spectrum for the bass. One of the biggest musicians in jazz in the past decades.
Today in a rare moment of delight away from the my work, I delighted in the languor that this song laid in front of my ears. A tale of nostalgia that reaches the brink of desperation but still clings to life. Who best to express this emotion that seems hold the weight of the world such as an Atlas of emotions than Charlie Haden. It's not a coincidence that a masterpiece which explores one the end spectrum of human emotions was birthed by a mind who willingly explored the organized chaos of free jazz, sprinted along with the bebop licks only to find expression and serenity by looking inwards serenaded by Cuban sons, Mexican love songs and century old Latin boleros. Close your eyes and in the darkness emerges a sadness emanating from this song's chords but more importantly also bashful through the crescendo like progression of the chords an hidden desire desire to live, to grow, to breath and to love asserts itself. And all that in the midst of desolation. I am grateful for all these artists who have spent their lives in search their own musical language not knowing that unbeknownst to most of us, they truly aimed to give a name, a sound, chord and notes to emotions which often surreptitiously inhabit our souls.
Thank you Charlie for First Song, along with a terrific performance by Alan particularly, but very nice sax and drumming too. Many musicians loved to play with Charlie Haden. I will always appreciate the beautiful music you gave to us.
Salty tears filled the boxes I packed to move last night. I know you are no longer in pain but, oh, so young my mentor. Hugs and condolences to your family.
Te decían filósofo más que tocador pues tus notas fluían al modo de pensamientos, llamadas a lo más íntimo. Siempre lograste reconciliar mis ánimos contrapuestos. Gracias Charlie por haberte ido dejando tras de ti una estela clemente.
Charlie Haden always seems to put everything he has in each and every note he plays. That's what makes him so great I think. He doesn't need speed to keep it interesting. As a listener you don't simply hear the notes he plays, you also feel them deep within. A true master !
What a beautiful tune! It always makes me feel like crying. Charlie Haden is one of my most favorite bass players. His solos in slow tempi are very soulful and beautiful. His running bass in fast tempi are just incredible. I enjoyed every bit of this video. Thank you for posting this.
Charlie Haden actually has something to say with his instrument. No gimmicks, no tricks. He just speaks the music that is resonating from the well of his soul. Like a bird singing from the treetop. Naked and beautiful.
I don't normally like jazz in its purest form - I discovered Charlie Haden after hearing that Mark King (the bassist of my favourite band Level 42) presented him with a BBC Jazz award this year. I've really taken to this, it's so fresh. I also find it interesting to see how talented Haden is as a bassist - I've only really ever appreciated the pionneers of the electric bass before now (King, Clarke, Miller) but this is fantastic! Good post :)
Charlie Haden actually showed me a long time ago that it's ok not to play complicated all the time. If you hear just one long note, then play just one long note. Lovely.
Absolutely amazing! Normally you would hear Gary on alto...I recommend the duo cd with pianist Alan Broadbent (Live at Maybeck Recital Hall-Concord Label)..not one spoiled or unnecessary note...one of the top 5 'on call' reed players for Hollywood film sessions!
Why can't any of this be heard wherever we go? I so dislike everything that is played in most any business I walk into. Why just today, while in IKEA I couldn't hear myself think for the overhead mess that was playing. My hearing aids pick up anything above me like it was in my face. Life is too short not to have truly good jazz flowing into our ears. Play for the Lord, Charlie. Give it hell.
I just listened to this again after reading your comments, Irving and Nicolas. If I'd only learned all those scales and stuck with it. Too many things in the way, I guess. I should have shut my door and practiced every waking moment.
Gary is playing quite a bit these days in LA with the Clare Fischer Big Band, either at the Vibrato Grill in Bel Air, or at the Four Points Sheraton at LAX...He just finished his 26th appearance with the Academy Awards Orchestra earlier this year--phenomenal!
This is actually my great grandfather Gary Foster. It makes me really happy that people are still enjoying his music. Just had some wine with him tonight haha
Charlie and Alan sound great! The tenor player was treading on dangerous ground trying to sound like Getz. If you don't have anything to say don't say it.
My parents took me to see this group in mid-nineties (I think it was). By that time, Haden had to play behind plexiglass for the difficulty he had with his nervous system overreacting to the point of pain when he played with drummers. It was a great event. Such good parents, no?
John David Kromkowski nice job although it should probably be noted 3 times slower I.E triplets instead of quarter notes, with tempo (cf Hi hat) between 50 and 66. The notes are correct though, so this is very helpful! Thanks !
Yo Yo Yo It's hard to tell with a cadenza like opening solo of a free player like Haden. For some of piano and sax solos it sort of sounds like he's playing a one beat. If those are whole notes then I think I think my tempo and quarter notes is fine. (Transcribing is hard enough for me as it is.) Do you post to jam of the week?
Hey, I posted my comment 4 months ago! Your info would be very helpful if we were still living in the US. Coincidentally, a week ago I attended an Alan Broadbent performance here in Auckland (his home town) - beautiful, as always. I'd love to see Quartet West or Gary Foster again.
I didn't realize that Gary Foster was playing with Quartet West. I saw him live a few times in LA, sometimes with Broadbent. Ernie Watts is great, but Foster doesn't suffer by comparison with anyone, IMO. A great Foster album is Make Your Own Fun.
Yes, this reflects how virtuosity is in a sense a lesser quality of music - the music can get lost in all those notes. Jazz artists often say that 'the notes that matter most are those you do not play.'
If you're looking for Joe Henderson's bassist, it may have been Victor Dvoskin, I'm pretty sure he was touring with him at the time, don't hold me to that though.
i fed my 3 month old baby with this as background music...at midnight. My baby smiled.
Beautiful but sad song. Rest peacefully, Charlie Haden.
Just for myself, I'd say "and" rather than "but"
RIP Charlie, thanks for the all the beautiful music!
Very sad, the greatest Jazzmen are going but not their musics, it will be there forever.

Another hero both in music and life has left us. Thanks for your gifts.
Gone this very day, but never forgotten. He was so very talented! I love your music Mr. Haden and will never never forget you!
This is passion and a poem talking to the universal man/woman. Pure love and genius

A true master !
It has been a terrible few weeks: first we lost Horace Silver and now it is Charlie Haden. May both of these master musicians RIP.

R.I.P. Charlie. You were a great musician and a soulful man! The world won't forget you and Calarts CERTIANLY won't forget you!
Charlie is the man. just sooooo musical and no bullshit. I saw him this year with quartet west and it was just great.
Rest in peace, Charlie... thanks for the great music
wonderful and amazing !!! Simply to listen and to love .
Wow, speechless. Music that defies description.Don't know what to say except that to say I love it is a terrible understatement.
R.I.P. Charlie
Danke, für die Musik, die Du uns geschenkt hast.
Farewell Charlie, I will always remember you and your wonderful music. Rest in Peace.
Rip Charlie. Thank you for the music.

R.I.P. Charlie Haden. You left us too soon!

Thats such beautiful lyrical playing. One of the best jazz musicians i've encountered
Charlie Haden actually showed me a long time ago that it's ok not to play complicated all the time. If you hear just one long note, then play just one long note. Lovely.
Rest in Peace....your music lives on in all of us.
Unbelievable pleasure... thanks for uploading

Ta contrebasse résonnera toujours dans nos tetes, salut à toi l'artiste

i agree with you so much. try having a burger somewhere with Justin Bieber in the background. you'll lose your appetite

Nicolas J.
a burger is a fine meal. i dont do fast food
vwbug1971 You still can!
(assuming you havent died or lost your fingers/ears or something awful- I'm sorry if that's the case)
If Charlie is going to play for the Lord, maybe you could have found a better phrase than "Give it hell." Just saying.
Awesome ! (and a superb Piano)
I LOVE IT! IT'S WONDERFUL
R.I.P. Charlie Haden
so, so ,so beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!
RIP. Thank you, Charlie Haden
It's eerie how much this guy sounds like Stan Getz!!!!
This is glorious!!!

I've worked out a transcription of Haden solo, here in noteflight.

maravilha!
my favorite bassist of all time. any idiom. upright or electric.
Maybe not the most virtuoso performers, but did you ever encounter more sensitive jazz artists?
Yes, this reflects how virtuosity is in a sense a lesser quality of music - the music can get lost in all those notes. Jazz artists often say that 'the notes that matter most are those you do not play.'
R.I.P Charlie haden :-(
addio Charlie, ci mancherai.
Sorry I haven't had the chance to look through all the comments but is this entire concert available? Gotta have it!
RIP, Charlie.
Gary Foster sounds just like Stan Getz...Great!
