    Im currently 34 weeks sober. Have turned to meditation, art and poetry. I still overeat but my life is way better now than it would be if i was consistently drinking or doing drugs. I am a work in progress. I am 34 years of age and i recognise that we all have potential deep within and that potential can be expressed through the pen or the paintbrush. Also, drink a lot of water. It will improve your health, self-esteem, and self-confidence drastically.

      Tom Smith well first of all happiness comes from within (you can find this truth in many teachings including stoicism and Buddhism) so to find this true happiness you need to learn to be at peace with yourself “love yourself” essentially. And to love yourself and be at peace with yourself you need to have a level of discipline so that you respect yourself and build confidence in your sense of worth. For example if you start your day off with a cold shower that takes some discipline especially on the days where that’s the last thing you want to do in the morning, you begin to be proud of yourself for conquering your inner demons and you’ll find a sense of inner peace. You can build on healthy habits and eventually through some strong awareness your mind will become impenetrable to negative thoughts. My idea of happiness is one where you are free from desire and impulse and can be comfortable in your skin anywhere you go, and always having a sense of love and empathy for all creatures, and an appreciation for something greater in life. For me to achieve this, a lifestyle in nature and helping others would be ideal. The veil on reality becomes lifted in somewhat of a spiritual sense I believe because when we have a sense of inner peace we just view the world with a different lens and everything has a glow about it when we feel fulfilled and happy.

    You have to be able to do both. There is a period where you should be productive, but for many of us who are over productive have to learn how to let go. Find and strike a balance. I remember a month ago when I lost my job, I treated it as a good opportunity to work out even more than I had been this year (since COVID hit was able to take advantage of working from home and having a good work out regiment.)
    How ever after doing a week of 2 a days after losing my job, I pushed to hard, and caused a major sciatic flare up injury from a previous injury. I took it that I needed to actually take a week and chill out. Watch movies and relax. Catch up on some sleep. For some of us stoicism comes almost too naturally and we need to remember to let go and relax. For some of us that’s even harder than learning to be stoic.

      Asen asenov You mean shouldnt have been born?
      Anyhow i agree with you, alot of this wisdom applies to ppl who are still within a reasonable space of what they’ve went through in their lives.
      The reality is, life can break anyone and no one is “too strong” for that, that doesnt mean that this wisdom isnt amazing and great and most of us can gain from it BUT it applies to ppl who still haven’t been broken yet. Alot of ppl give themselves way too much credit for not being broken yet, but ppl who are or know someone who is broken simply know that they just didnt have the right mix of circumstances that will be able to break them, and they’re lucky for that.
      At the end of the day , life has taught me that we all have our breaking point, just like we all die. If ur not there yet, know this! Your not a special snowflake, and no matter how strong u are, and how much you’ve persevered , you simply haven’t had the right mix of circumstances that will do the trick and break your ass for you!
      No one and i mean no one, makes it in this life alone, everyone needs some luck and the right circumstances , hard work and grit not withstanding.

    Key points on mental toughness:
    1)You are more powerful than God. In terms of your faculty. Be self-reliant don't depend on others.
    2)Laziness and procrastination are unnatural. Laziness can lead to stagnation and deterioration of human spirits. If you are lazy than you don't love yourself enough. To destroy Laziness develop courage(Endurance, confidence, High- mindedness,cheerfulness and industriousness).
    3)Contentment leads to mental stability. Don't crave for wanting anything.

    I have to disagree with one sentence.
    For me, procrastinating and being lazy don't feel "nice" at all. I feel guilty and ashamed in front of myself and generally terrible when I procrastinate.
    If being lazy wasn't a problem for me - I wouldn't try to stop being lazy. Stoic philosophy doesn't tell us what EXACTLY should we do with our time, it just teaches us how to spend the time so we are in agreement with our inner voice, feelings, desires and so we are happy in the end of a day.

      @essah4161 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      I get your point, but I think this nice feeling refers to the the things which make you temporalily happy(in the present) like binge watching a series but than comes the realization of how much time you have wasted and then you fell bad as you describe it. I would say Marcus Aurelius was referring to that present moment when you feel "nice" but dont understand that you dig a even deeper hole to get out of as you run away from the actual task.

      Working with mentally restricted children taught me one important thing in life: lazyness and procrastination are symptoms of overtaxing and not fulfilling your personal needs. Lazyness is usually defined by others requirements and demands. So overcome the judgement of other people and accept your weakness of that moment or lack of skills to solve upcoming tasks because maybe you need it for a while to live life at it's fullest afterwards.
      I just try to keep terms like lazy or sluggish out of my vocabulary because it doesn't solve the problem(s) you or someone else is facing at that exact moment.

    • @AsatorIV
      @AsatorIV 5 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      @@SlickSnake69 I agree. Procrastination probably comes from some kind of perfectionism within us or, in other words, from a fear that we'll do what we are supposed to do badly. I am good at video games. I can play a lot of them and it's a temporary fix for me, so much more pleasant than struggling with statistics or optimization problems. But, of course, it's not what I should or want to be doing for hours at a time, because at the end I learn nothing and feel like life trickles between my fingers.

      Procractination for rich people makes them feel nice. For poor people, shackled with debts, uncertainty, horrbile jobs and responsibility on all accounts, every moment of laziness is a giant stress, it's a moment spent in a horrifying realization that's life is going to be only harder the next day.
      It's amazing how you folks try to apply ruling classes' ideology to your working class existence. That's not going to work.

    • @AsatorIV
      @AsatorIV 5 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@KissatenYoba I think you are projecting. You would be surprised how stressed rich people are by doing nothing. In terms of mental health, they are often worse off than some middle class and lower class people, because they always feel like they should be earning more money, no matter what.

    Mental toughness and physical routines (healthy routines for mind ) go hand in hand, we can't be wise and have saner mind without indulging ourselves in saner activities.

    How interesting is to see there exist universal values for our human condition, and, as the famous saying enounces: The finger that points to the moon is not the moon, or, a picture of a banana won't feed you. I mean, there are other philosophies or disciplines that agree with stoicism, like zen buddhism, which this channel also talks about.
    Thanks a lot for all this videos you make. I love them, and they inspire me.

    Probably the only thing I don't like about great stoic thinkers is their sexist tone: man, man, man.
    Open your eyes, look around and see how many women through the chapters of recorded history, have achieved feats no man could have.
    Other than this, I like you all, Stoic Fathers, because you describe my traits precisely as they are! And thanks to considering your advice and hints I am getting more adept each and every day.

    Not only consumerism, but also be madly ambitious, laziness and disregard for everyone, are shoved through peer pressure. And many get angry, when you have your own goals and ignore their petty power struggles, you work and you care.

    If you wake up with the complete confidence that whatever you are doing has meaning then you are free to participate in your own life. Laziness and procrastination are signals that you are delaying the everyday decisions that we make in guiding our lives. If you're a good person and it's reflected in your decisions then people will naturally gravitate towards you.
