another thing about the style, their actual reasoning for it was that they wanted it to feel like how the turtles would draw themselves. That's why it looks so amateurish and messy because it's also supposed to represent the messiness of teenager's notebook or sketchbook

That's only possible with the addition of a texture layer though as 3d animation only comes in two flavours. Something you can tolerate seeing and something that wants you to claw your eyes out.
As I see it the real thing that came from Spiderverse was that 3d animators were reminded that it was 3d ANIMATION and that you can use style to tell a lot that you could never get away with in the Pixar style 3d animation.
What's great is that so far each studio has given it its own spin and made the visual style a companion to the story they were telling instead of just a quick paste job of "others do it, it's profitable, so let's do it as well," that has been prevalent in the animation medium since the original Toy Story. Spiderverse had the comic book style, "The Last Wish" had the watercolour, fairy tale style, and Mutant Mayhem has that messy edge to it that you'd expect from someone who's yet to learn how to draw well.
And I love it! I find it far more interesting to look at that than the cut-and-paste photorealistic style since that does nothing to move the story and frankly, I can look out the window and see a better resolution. I come to animation for spectacle, to enjoy the look of the unreal, and visual exaggerations presented in a way that supports the narrative. That's what animation can do.

@@nielsjensen4185 One reason I think the teams have been so keen on giving the style its own spin and going all out with it is because the style is so intensive and work inducing that you literally can’t do that, or else it’ll visibly look like garbage. So I feel once they decide to animate like this they’re all in or all out.

While Puss and Boots, the Bad Guys, and now Mutant Mayhem are clearly taking inspiration from Spiderverse, they're all so clearly going for something different and unique. The thing they're taking from is the blend of 2D and 3D to add unique style, not Spiderverse's specific style, and I adore that.

You successfully put into words my exact thoughts on the style of this film. Very few people I see on TH-cam seem to be literate in the intricacies, importance and purpose of visual style and consistency, and how that should tie in with the cohesive “ooze” that forms the artistic product’s identity from a purely narrative standpoint - but you do really seem to care. This TMNT project looks like the people behind it have a genuine care for the franchise. The art style looks very gritty and dirtied up, but I think it's for a much deeper reason than just a stylist choice. I took it as an indication of how long the turtles have been training and fighting as ninjas, as brothers. And you already pointed this out, but I LOVE how the main cast aren't A- list celebrities because this gives us a fresh take on a classic franchise like Ninja Turtles. As someone who has grown up with these turtles, I can say that this movie's going to be one of the best TMNT movies we've gotten so far.

Honestly, I really hope Mutant Mayhem is a good movie. Nowadays, I try to remain cautiously optimistic about new projects coming out, and not expecting too much to avoid getting burned by disappointment. This rings especially true for me with animated things. Plus, the Great HBO Max Purge of 2022 has made me super paranoid about animated projects, since many of the Purge's unfortunate victims were animated projects (thanks a lot for that, Zaslav... 😒). So, I'm really hoping Mutant Mayhem will end up being another home run.

  • @ghostfromgotham2661

I really like the direction that animation is going in right now, cuz you're right, for a long time, animation was dominated by a single style and pushing for realism rather than letting the style tell a story along with the story itself. And none of disney's animation has been bad, really, that realism is still super pretty and it IS impressive that they're able to do that and come up with all this new technology for it, but when all your movies look the same, it unintentionally makes them all *feel* the same, in a sense, which isn't really what you want? I definitely believe Spiderverse was a complete turning point for animation, and I love how companies have started to take notice of the praise for that movie and it's animation and style and the love put into it and have started to bring that into their own movies. And at first, I was afraid that companies would do the same thing they've been doing for years but just with the spiderverse style and just have every movie replicate the spiderverse style and make things feel stale again, but while a lot of this newer animation is similar and definitely takes inspiration from spiderverse, I love that each style feels like it fits the movie it's in, and has started to combine the 2D and 3D to tell
Like spiderverse tries to replicate the style and feel of comics because the story is from comics, arcane to me feels like it's replicating video-game cutscenes (or at least how a video game cut scene can feel when the better graphics of a cut scene can pull you into the story and action a lot more) and it mixes 2D and 3D to show the power and impact of certain things like in the fight scenes or jinx's mental state, puss in boots replicates the style of the illustrations on old storybooks with a somewhat watercolor vibe, the bad guys uses the 2D elements to make it feel more like these are corny heist-pulling bad guys straight out of a cartoon, etc.
And mutant mayhem is no different, it feels like the drawings of a dorky teenager mixed with like a grungy spraypaint feel and uses that 2D to emphasize that (like if you pause on a smear frame, the 3D model is practically untouched, but it uses little scribbles on top of it to give the motion effect, or there's little lines around light sources like you would draw on a cartoon sun, or there's sketchy lines around certain things to emphasize them (like when donnie gets stabbed, there's a couple lines on the edges of the sai to subtly direct your attention to it)).
Like idk, yeah spiderverse is definitely an inspiration for all of these with how it made the entire movie feel like the story literally broke out of the pages of a comic book straight onto the screen, but it definitely feels like these movies aren't trying to replicate that style exactly, just take inspiration from how it's done and how to actually put love and creativity into the animation to further the story and pull you into it
thanks for coming to my ted talk (sorry for rambling I'm autistic and an animation nerd XD)

What I like about the TMNT as a concept and what I think reflects in the animation style of this new movie is, it feels like an idea a couple of college guys came up with while stoned out of their minds then just sketched out messily

I love what Spider-Verse did, and how it broke the mold…nay…OBLITERATED AND REBUILT AND REARRANGED THE MOLD!
However…I don’t think Spider-Verse is the only one we should thank! And I don’t just mean various animation shorts. Before Spider-Verse, there was another animated movie…equally as visually stunning and just as experimental as all these new films! The Peanuts Movie!!!
Yup! From the late Blue Sky studios! The Peanuts Movie, which came out, I think around 2015! That film was animated in such a way that it literally felt like a classic episode of Peanuts, or even a classic comic strip! It also used a hybrid 2D, 3D, low frame rate style!!!
Also, films like the LEGO Movie, and even older live action films, like Speed Racer, and Scott Pilgrim!!!
I feel that the groundwork has been laid for new creators to push the envelope, and even showed, if only for a few years, what the medium of animation, live action, and film in general can do if the right minds are given the tools and resources!!!
While, I personally think that the start of this new animation revolution (specifically animation) began with the Peanuts Movie, Spider-Verse showed just how insane this new experimental style can be! Though again, LEGO movie also helped in practically recreating the exact style of LEGO Stop motion, when only a handful of things were actually Stop Motion, but nonetheless, the hyper stylized CGI is still impressive!!!

I love the movie from what we've seen so far, when I first saw the trailer I was like, "Oh, another movie trailer, can't wait to see if I'm really going to enjoy this or not." but instead of skipping after 10 seconds I watched it all the way through and I really want to see it! TMNT was something I grew up with, albeit the one on Nickelodeon in the 2010's, so I'm excited to see how this comes out. Also, favorite topping is bacon.

I saw someone imply spiderverse had copyright over experimental 3d animation animated on 2s and i wanted to rip my hair out 😭😭 i am very glad spiderverse opened up the minds of the people in charge at big studios, seeing how much praise and awards it got, and now theyre allowing their artists to experiment!!! Im so glad 3d animation is shifting away from realism anf more into the territory of 2d animation

    4:05 lmao ur kidding right
out of all the tmnt iterations whether most beloved or most hated literally noone talks about the 2000s series
for nostalgia they think of the og
for the modern era they think of the 2012 series
the 2003 show is the forgotten middle child of tmnt i mean it has a small cult following but in terms of mainstream media noone really talks about it
also ur right about every iteration having its own style that includes the bay movies too
also some of those 4 turtle actors have been on nickelodeon for sometimes
so they are only unknowns to people who dont watch nickelodeon

I never read or watched the Ninja Turtles before, aside from the first movie, but the way you described them as having an inherently grimy, gross premise while still being full of love and heart, it made me want to see a TMNT cartoon made by Klasky Csupo. I’m so happy that spiderverse exists so we can get more animated comic book films with. With the mcu being as big as it was and being so influential in media it’s spiderverse was really needed to diversify the super hero genre, and it’s cool to see so many studios following suit. Hell we’re getting a spiderverse inspired Batman beyond movie.

Great video but in something you point and some misconceptions.....like LOW BAR when it comes to movies of the TMNT......this franchise only have truly 3 bad films (TMNT III, and the 2 of Michael Bay reboots), and when it comes to ANIMATION, the franchise have not a single bad film....from Turtles Forever, TMNT vs Batman, the first CGI film TMNT 2007, recently the BRILLIANT Rise of the TMNT Movie, the animated films of the Ninja Turtles flipping ROCKS, and this is why I'm super excited about Mutant Mayhem, plus Seth Rogen company have produce 2 of my modern favorites comic adaptations in Invincible and the Boys. And About the Spiderverse style (I keep comment this....WE NEED A NAME PEOPLE FOR THIS STYLE someone give it a name can't be just SPIDERVERSE STYLE)....this style have been use to perfection in every project I have see it and all have a very different FEEL and Look, despite all blend 3D with 2D, and have lower frames, go watch every project have this style.....start from the begging that is NOT Spiderverse, the first thing I have seen using that style was that Disney Short Paperman (yeah ironically was DISNEY the first place this start got a recognition, I'm sure someone else did before but this is the more mainstream first appearance), that short emulate the classic Disney 2D animation without been fully 2D, been done in CG for the most part, but it have that classical Disney look........Spiderverse use it to recreate a COMIC STYLE, from panels compositions that emulate a comic page, to Onomatopoeias appear when ever a big sound effect happen, to blending half tones to create texture, the idea was making a Comic in the same vane as classic Jack Kirby / Stan Lee era......The Mitchells vs the Machines the next big film using this style do it to emulate this concept art that we see in initial pitches for any kind of project, that feel more experimental than final....The Badguys emulated classic cartoons, that feel more in tune with the vibes of that film....Arcane League of Legends (yes not only FILMS are using this style) used to emulate the ARTWORKS you can find the same illustrations that promote games like League of Legends use, so every frame feel like a painting for art books, Puss in Boots try to emulated the illustrations of Children Books like the fantasy stories of fairy tales, and now TMNT Mutant Mayhem, is emulating that grunge art style that inspired comics like the original TMNT, been more messy and kinda ugly but artistic ugly....I effing love it. This is why I think we need to come for a BETTER name than just call it the SPIDERVERSE STYLE.....this have been use even in videogames like Guilty Gear, Street Fighter, and others use it, is a very versatile style and it deserved a better name.
