I was aboard USS Joseph Strauss DDG-16 and USS Benjamin Stoddert DDG-22, both Adams class DDG's. I loved the lines of these Adams class DDG's. But I spent time off the coast of South Vietnam. We fought along with USS St. Paul (1970), USS Providence, USS Oklahoma City and USS Newport News all in 1972. I loved all of the guns and gunfire these cruisers had. I was an FTG so I am more into guns than missiles. Adams class DDG's had more firepower than the cruisers I mentioned. But missiles, AZROC and torpedoes were rarely used if ever while I was off the coast of South Vietnam and North Vietnam.
USS Sterett a DLG fired a couple of missiles that knocked out either one or two migs in April 1972.
I loved the lines all of these old ships. Battleships (I took a tour of USS Missouri in Pearl Harbor), cruisers and destroyers. I dislike the lines of the newer destroyers. They have everything covered for more safety, but they look like sh*t.

Sailor to Sailor Comradery: As a former DDG Sailor (Kidd Class), I agree, the Adams class would win the bikini contest hands down. As for the USS Coontz class? I don't know if they could even make it down the runway in the evening wear contest! To the narrator of this video, good job. You did the USS Adams proud! I learned the importance of water tight integrity from a video made of the USS Adams!

Exactly when did this happen? I was on the Adams from ‘82 to ‘86 and I don’t recall anyone being lost overboard during that time. A good part of the crew when I got there had made the Indian Ocean deployment in ‘79 - ‘80, and no one ever mentioned anyone being lost overboard.
While I was aboard, we had several people killed in non-line of duty accidents. A QM was killed in motorcycle accident, one of the OSs died in a car wreck, and three engineers were killed in a horrible car wreck on A1A just after we got back from an operation.

On the night of 22 November 1975 the USS Belknap CG-26 collided with the USS John F. Kennedy CV-67 in the Mediterranean Sea. The Belknap's superstructure was demolished and ablaze, flames shooting 400 feet into the night sky. The USS Claude V Ricketts DDG-5 came alongside despite the rough seas, her crew battling the conflagration for 7 hours, evacuating the severely injured, while fragments from exploding 3-inch ammunition showered down upon her decks. Thanks to Captain Robert C. Powers and brave crew of the Ricketts, the Belknap was saved, along with the W45 nuclear warheads in her missile magazine. The Ricketts was awarded a Navy Unit Commendation.
I made my 1st class midshipmen cruise on the Ricketts, summer of 1972.

There was a store/shop on the waterfront in Jacksonville raising money to go towards moving her there for a museum. It was full of items ,like those old yellow battle lanterns, taken off other Adams class ships ( for viewing only) but sold the ball caps and small stuff ( reproductions) of all the Adams class ships. I was on the SEMMES DDG 18 (82-86) and signed up on a book he had there to be contacted as a volunteer to help restore the Adams. Was very disappointed she wasn’t going to be a museum and pissed off that the Navy was going to scrap her.

I regretted that decision later on. Anyway, I later on joined the usn reserves for 4 years (2 years on base at Floyd benne field and 2 years onboard uss Perry (ffg-7) in states island n.y..(1990-94). What I regretted and failed to mention is I wished I could have served onboard the uss COCHRANE at least 6 years total. I missed all my shipmates on the COCHRANE and sorry that I lost contact with them all. I remember them always they were all a great crew and I miss some of the officers as well. Captain Gaston was a real motivated officer, a grate captain and a positive motivator..............seaman Dooley was a good christain and seaman Morley was a great role model in our deck division. I even miss petty officer first class Shaw. I wish I could have served some more time on the uss COCHRANE and more to our great country instead of working for the u.s. postal service. The best years of my life was serving the u.s.navy, because I found Jesus Christ as my personal savior onboard the COCHRANE.......fair winds and following seas to all us sailors. I went to Fire Control Technician "C" School at Great Lakes on the MK-68 Gun system's AN/SPG-53F Radar in 1980. One of my instructors was an E-6 who had just come from the Adams. He told us all about the new digital gun radar, laser range finder, and digital computer installed in DDG-2's gun system. It was a proof-of-concept digital upgrade to the formerly analog MK-68 GFCS installed originally in all of the Adams class. I graduated from "C" school and got orders to USS Cochrane DDG-21 homeported in Pearl Harbor. The Adam's class were beautiful ships and the last true Destroyers. The DDG-51 Arleigh Burke-class is almost as large and heavy as a World War I Battleship, and they are larger than the World War II heavy cruisers. The Burkes would be better rated as light cruisers (CLG) than as destroyers (DDG). And while good-looking in their own way, they lacked the classic lines of the Adam's and Forrest Sherman classes. IMHO.

It was put on museum hold. There was a group in Bay City, MI that tried to get her, but they couldn't raise enough money to prep it for towing through the St. Lawrence Seaway. Then there was a group headed by former Adams CO Robert Branco, who tried to get her moved back to Jacksonville. They made a lot of headway and even did some interior work on the ship, but in the end, the fundraising was progressing too slowly, so the Navy decided to scrap her.

They should have saved this ship and used the uss adams as a naval reserve ship for training. I guess it would not be cost effective, however, these ships served a great part of our naval history and so I admit it is not only sad but disgusting to just scrap these incredible ships. If I could I have the adams class destroyer rebuild to similar design and specifications and upgrade with the newer weapon systems for better fighting capabilities...

As a reservist Commissaryman having spent a fair amount of time on older tin cans like the Craig DD885 and Lowry DD770 which had a serving line a deck lower than the tiny cramped galley, I was thrilled when I saw the spacious galley on the Buchanan with the serving line next to it. I had a LT Commander named Beale whose parents owned a bakery in Maine helped me bake at night, simply because he loved baking. He was head of engineering.
When seas were getting a little rough he would call the bridge, steady her out, I'm frying donuts.
