  • Should you go to university/college? How expensive is university/college? Is it worth the amount of money you have to pay?
University can be expensive…so for anyone deciding on whether or not they should go to university, I made this video. I go into detail on how much money I’ve spent to get my degree. I discuss my spending on necessities like tuition, living expenses, transportation expenses, food, etc.
For reference, I studied mechanical engineering at the University of Waterloo, so the numbers you see in this video are specific to that program. Every university and every program can be different, but this just gives you an idea of what you can expect. Timestamps for every study term I had are as follows:
    00:44 1A (Sep - Dec 2016)
    03:44 1B (Jan - Apr 2017)
    05:14 2A (Sep - Dec 2017)
    06:42 2B (May - Aug 2018)
    08:11 3A (Jan - Apr 2019)
    09:40 3B (Sep - Dec 2019)
    11:06 4A (Sep - Dec 2020)

Awesome videos. I am so glad you talk about the cost of university/college. Unfortunately, these days it seems like an afterthought when you graduate and have a difficult time finding a good paying job. I think the cost of university/college should be a big part of the higher education conversation right along with academics. You don't want a dream to turn into a nightmare.

I am about to graduate from the University of Virginia, and I've only spent 4k dollars once when I took 2 summer courses; every semester, the school would give me an average of 1k for free. So, you can say I did not pay anything to attend the University other than the opportunity cost and personal expenses such as clothing, toiletries, etc. In fact if you add all the money I received I got more money than what I spent for college. Also food, rent, and tuition was all included for free. I am so thankful :)

Here in the Netherlands it's around 8k euros for 4 year degree and if your parent don't make a lot of money it gets fully paid by the government plus you get some extra money in your pocket each month(around 200 euros will be left after paying school costs). But I think in the US you have more opportunities to make a lot of money after school but still the 100k sounds soo expensive just for a degree.

He paid ultimately only 33% of that sum. But it is still extremely expensive in comparison with studying in Europe.
There you basically only pay around 600€ a year (transportation cost included) and oftentimes get the living expenses covered.
The highest debt that you can finish with is capped at 10000€. And you can get around 25-50% discount on paying back immediately.

However, many students also have a job on the side - so that they don’t have any debt at all in the end.

Yes, it is a lot of money, but it's definitely worth it! As Mechanical Engineers, we get to literally build the future. We get to define what it's like to live five, ten, fifty years from now. We get to build things to send into space, and eventually, build things IN space. So think of the tuition fees as an investment. As a good mechanical engineer, you definitely will make your money back! I personally think it's absolutely worth it, and I try to show why, with my TH-cam videos about mechanical engineering. As always, great video Tamer, keep up the good work :)

Bro, those are rookie numbers compared to the school I went to. I went to Florida Institute of Technology for one term to pursue ME and it easily cost around $29,000. By the way, it was a private institute near NASA. In one year it was about $60,000 USD, which is about $240,000 in 4 years. Bro, trust me you're lucky. The school did offer a lot of great experiences and I got to meet a lot of wonderful people and friends, but the price was just too expensive. Many students had the opportunity to work for NASA after graduating because of the internship offered there. Even though I had a merit scholarship and government-funded programs like grants, it didn't help bring the cost down that much. I had to pay out of pocket. The worst part is that you're required to stay on campus and pay for a meal plan during your first semester. It was mandatory. I left after that semester and to community school (the best decision ever made). Bro, I saved so much money and I got extra each semester, then transferred to a public university when expenses were way cheaper.

Hmm I’m not sure what the actual percentage is. However, I know that a good amount of people have mechanical engineering jobs in several industries like consumer electronics, aerospace, biomedical, automotive, etc. But, there were a few that got jobs working as Product Managers.
