  • Looking back on my experience as a biomedical engineering student, there are a few things I could've done differently to give myself a better experience - things I could've done to learn more and improve my educational experience - things I wish I knew. In this video, I refer to those things as regrets because I didn't do them.

    3rd year bme student here :) i have the exact same regrets as you, especially with taking too many classes. i feel like a better way to get in the field you’re interested in is to major in something else like bio or mechanical or electrical engineering and then get a masters in bme. you will get to work in the field you’re interested while having a solid background in your focus of work.
    bme is basically you know a little about a lot, and i feel like it’s not balanced nor cohesive enough to amount to much progress except for when you take your concentration classes.

      You picked all the engineering majors with the lowest chances of employment. Aerospace, yeah major in it if you think you can get into Space X, Boeing, Airbus, and the defense companies. If you dont get in, then it is as useless as BME, might as well major in Mechanical Eng, you can do Aero with a Mechanical Eng but also so much more. BME is a waste of time unless you going to med school. Chemical as well, You better off with a Chemistry degree. The only good engineering degrees are Civil , Mech, Electrical, the rest are unemploymend degrees.

    This is such a fantastic take on the rat race that students experience and try to push themselves through by getting caught up in the minutia as you said. Most takes are either too conservative in which they overvalue grades and the ones that realize that grades and scores are overvalues aren't well articulated. I think you did a fantastic job putting this into words.

    Hi, Leon! I am also a BME student at UC Irvine! Thank you for sharing your sincere regrets that are valuable to me because I find myself in your words! When you described stopping overtaking courses, I just realized that I had 21 units in the spring quarter! Hopefully, I will apply your experience and be focused on finding internships and conducting research since I finished my first year only! I wanted to ask you about making a start-up in the BME field! Did you or your friends had any experience with that? Did they attended the Y Incubator and what were their steps?

      @name8031 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hi Tair, I'm also a BME at UCI, but just finished my third year and doing an internship! I recommend you try to join a research lab-- it's a completely new experience and is something to talk about in interviews. Email professors, include your resume, make it obvious that you have read about their research and care about helping. Join BMES, go to networking events, and get to know your TAs-often times they know how if your professor has open spots in their lab, or what he likes to see in his class.
      And apply apply apply apply. You can never apply to too many internships. Make it a habit every week to apply to another batch of internships, on indeed, linkedin, handshake especially. The internship I got I almost didn't consider applying for, yet it was a pretegious company! Interviews are sometimes with the directors of the department at big companies, so just getting an interview alone is a good experience! I made my resume stand out with a little bit of color, and a focus on lab experience and projects/competitions from high school. My GPA was good, but I don't think that was what mattered the most to them to be honest. They commented about how my resume emphasized my (little) experience during my interview.
      In your second year, the BME classes will be worth attending, but I cannot say the same about the third year. This summer, try to get some experience, maybe teach yourself Solidworks to prepare for joining a BMES project. If you don't know programming, try to learn some Javascript or something-it will help make 60A and 60B way easier. Let me know if you have any questions, I'm here for another year!

    (7:43) very accurate, I am a mechanical egnineer graduate(3 years work experince) , if you wanna secure that good job with good company dont care about graduation, no one care about your score, they care about work experince and in campus activites ,they didnt care that i went to the hardest and best ranked school in my country, i had equal chance to someone who went to a funky schools and graduated so much faster with no effort , that was my mistake too , if you dont want to get stuck in small company and having hard time to switch bcz the experince you gain isnt good, just have some work experince, even if you have to take a semester off before grauation ,im kinda stuck now i have been interviewed by the biggest compaines in europe for the last few months, but no luck bcz my experince is not related directly to market demand

    Hey Leon, I really appreciate your honest heart but I wish to say that never give up on what you are doing. Most people study the field because it is lucrative but that should not always be the case. Be the best there is in the field you are in and the opportunities will always show up. I know we need the money to survive sometimes but stick to your original plan and follow your heart and intuition, it will not fail you. Here are a few things you try.
    - Start thinking out of the box, in most cases where there are many people there are also fewer opportunities and probably high competition.
    - Where you are in my opinion offer lots of opportunities for creativity and invention
    - Believe in yourself and what your doing, remembers leading a virgin field is always lonely but in the end, people will always follow you. Believe and believe and work, work, work hard and smart.
    - Don't be carried by what your friends are doing. You are unique and you put unique energy into the world, we are counting on you.
    Good luck bro!

    Throughout hs, I always knew I wanted to go to med school, but bc I didn’t rly think abt college until now. I defaulted to telling myself I’d be a bio major. And so I took classes geared to that. No coding classes, no physics classes.
    Fast forward to my junior year and I take calc BC and find myself to really enjoy the class. I’m taking calc 3 and Diffyq my senior year and my senior year SHOULD BE relatively easy otherwise. What classes do you recommend taking in High school in order to gain exposure and/or college credit for classes that I would be doing as a BME student?

    Hi! Thank you, this was a really informative video. I’m currently in high school and am thinking of pursuing biomedical engineering while also wanting to go to med school (bme + premed). However, I hear engineering in general is an incredibly difficult field to sustain a competitive gpa in, so I’m not sure if majoring in a non-engineering discipline may be the way to go. Even though engineering isn’t necessary for med school, I also enjoy the field on its own and may even enter an engineering career rather than going to med school if I decide to later on. I’m kind of at a crossroad. In your opinion, was doing engineering worth it for med school, and were you able to maintain a good med-school-competitive gpa? Thanks in advance!

    • @leonzhaoo
      @leonzhaoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Thanks! My situation is unique in that I am enrolled in a combined medical program so my "premed" requirements are much more lenient and I don't have to apply to medical school as a regular applicant. As a result, it's been easier to maintain a good gpa. However, I do think it's worth it in your case if you think that you truly enjoy engineering and can see yourself doing it for a while. BME and premed also have a lot of overlap so that will also make doing both easier for you.

Lack of information before majoring and then mistakes you may take as a freshman because of it is the actual problem we need to be talking about.

    I honestly hate how people have the mindset of thinking that you have to be competitive in high school and University. At the end of the day, only how well you do and achieving your dreams matters. It has nothing to do with anyone else. This is why I despise the ATAR system, which compares everyone to each other through numbers. Everyone has different subjects and differing career goals. Unis should accept students on their individual strengths like Western Sydney University, not their identity as a measly number.
    (Sorry for the rant, I’m just so put off by the selection rank system we have here in Australia xD)

    Once you get your MD you can work for BME companies, they hired MDs, less so BME undergrad. BME has only one good route, the MD route.

    I want yo study biomedical engineering but I don’t want it to have any connection with human body like just the machines or medical equipment. So what i have to take or choose?

      I had every class at least once a week. Usually multiple lectures

    4th year BME here, the main problem with BME is that you don't need a degree in BME to do BME. BME companies hire ME and EE to do BME, while ME and EE jobs don't necessary hire BME. Heck, many job applications don't even recognize BME as an engineering major. BME is a jack of all trades master of none and in todays job market to land a job you need to specialize in something. The main benefit of BME are the research opportunities, but that's about it. Just do ME or EE, much more versatile and can transition into BME later in career.
    BME=Bad Mechanical Engineer/Business Major Eventually

    I'm curious. I would have thought that if you pick this major you would have known or pursue a specific type of job that required this major. Do people don't do this before hand? It sounds like you had no idea or passion for a given career and just picked whatever sounded interesting to you.

      My end goal was always to become a doctor. True, I studied bme because I was interested in it but I never really considered building an engineering career off of it.

    You can't blame everything on Biomedical Engineering. There are many medical doctors who are Biomedical Engineering who are actually doing stuff with the degree.
    You really didn't give much thoughts to the course & the end game.
    I went to medical school. I know there were times that I felt that I hated the course. I found the areas I loved and focused on them.

    Hello Leon, I would like to know if you could guide me on this path as I am heading towards BME for M.sc and would like to know if its feasible as I have my B.sc in Anatomy?

    • @leonzhaoo
      @leonzhaoo  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hard for me to say whether it is feasible. I would advise that you check the course requirements for your bme program of interest and reach out to the admin of the academic program regarding your concerns.

    I noticed all your regrets are related to the practical aspects of education, i.e., a means to make money or to get the career you want. It doesn't sound like you enjoyed learning the subject matter that much.

    • @leonzhaoo
      @leonzhaoo  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it's possible enjoy what you are learning while also being practical. But yeah, being an engineer was never my end goal
