Sorry, since when has anyone ever questioned if Yorkshire is in the north?
When students started using keyboards instead of pens, it took away all sense of direction and geographical awareness.
The North starts at the Scottish Border apparently.
I'm currently at Leeds (was in that Central Village block in 2017 too! Don't know your friend though haha) and I just had some thoughts to note!:
1) You keep saying Leeds is a 'city university' but I think it's important to remember, and one of the main reason that I and many people I know, chose Leeds over Sheffield (classic city uni) or Nottingham (classic campus uni), is that it's a campus uni within the city, there is one big campus relatively central in the city rather than loads of separate buildings scattered across the city or a campus outside the city. Beckett's city campus is more a 'city university' with scattered buildings across the city and then their campus in Headingley is more a 'campus university'.
2) There are 'old school halls of residence' at Leeds, they're just further away from the university/city than Central Village and the other tower blocks. My friends lived in Devonshire Halls (about a 10-15 minute walk away towards Headingley but between Woodhouse/Hyde Park), which had formal dinners with gowns (I snuck into one) and is catered. There are other examples on campus like Charles Morris Halls (but they're a lot newer and wouldn't say they're 'old school') and Lyddon Hall. It just depends which accommodation you choose!
3) For houses, Leeds is cheap (and cheerful) as there are a lot of student areas - Hyde Park being the main one and then Headingley and Woodhouse being more a mix between residents and students. So there's plenty of choice and I think it's the fact that most of the students all live together in LS6 is why there's that huge sense of community (as evident by Leedsfess being one of the most liked uni confessions page and Leeds Student Group having a lot of activity/drama (house of girls with their echo dot amiright), more than my friends' universities pages).
4) I went to Fruity (SU club) in freshers this year and... yeah, the vibe was a lot different before the pandemic! The Student Union as a whole though is, to quote my friend who goes to Queen Mary, "amazing" and "if you had told me it was like this I would have applied here for my masters", lmao. Having two bars, a co-op, coffee shops, food outlets, a club, an opticians, etc all on central campus is what really distinguished Leeds from the other universities I applied to.
5) Otley runs are a must
6) With the campus tour: There are four libraries - Laidlaw, Brotherton (the old school looking one), Edward Boyle, and Health Sciences. The 'nature area' is the sustainable garden.- you can grow plants and stuff there, not my cup of tea but a lot of people like doing it. The street is outside the union and yeah, there are commonly poster sales, plant sales, coffee vans, etc. At the moment there's a festive tepee for Christmas and over the summer one of the Union pubs, Old Bar extended to outside and the football was on there.
7) I disagree with your take at the end about clubbing and finding friends etc - it can be a big part but a lot of my friends in first year didn't drink or like going out and it never hindered us being friends or them making friends! And now I'm an OAP and in my fifth year at Leeds, it's really not that big a deal. No one judges you for not drinking and many people go to pres without going out or going out without drinking. And there are some groups who go out every weekend (my house was one in first and second year hahaha) but there are equally lots of people who go to the pub for a quiet night or do other things instead. I can understand why you got that impression though having visited Central Village which is the accommodation notorious for clubbing and nightlife - it's the most relaxed ones in terms of rules and most people choose that one because it's known to be good for parties - but not all of Leeds University is like that!

@@haileybudgell5361 res curfews/alcohol limits are more of a North American thing! You have a lot more autonomy in res in the UK, nobody will be checking up on you for these thigs :) Source: went to Uni in both Leeds and North America. Hope you love Leeds!

As a leeds native, gonna be honest, the otley run is trash. Imagine walking 3 miles in the rain and cold on a main road making dead convo with Ben from one of your modules. Sobering up slowly and wondering how people enjoy this.
Sounds like more of a you problem
There are 27,000 universities in the world. This year Leeds University is ranked at 75 the QS international tables which brings it within the top one third of one percent of world universities.. It is of course a Russell group university. The QS world employability rankings places Leeds even higher at 51.
The top 100 employers in the UK (ie The High Flyers' report which is viewable online) ) publish an annual ranking of the 20 universities whose graduates they favour most. In the real world this counts for quite a lot more than the often baffling and sometimes downright bizarre national rankings that appear in publications like the Times and the Guardian (Lancaster and Loughborough universities were consistently placed as top ten universities in the Times national rankings???!!! You have got to be kidding!!!).
For 2022 the High Flyers' list places Leeds at number 5. Cambridge is ranked at number 7 and Oxford is ranked at number 10.
As the foremost city outside London for banking and legal services Leeds is the wealthiest city in the north of England with upmarket shops, restaurants and cafes. The university has an embracing and safe feeling campus 10 minutes walk from the thriving city centre. On and around the campus there is some lovely architecture and a buzzing social scene.
Of the UK's 120 universities Leeds falls consistently within the top three for the number of applicants. With an impressive international standing for the quality of its research and a first rate social scene Leeds will always be a serious choice for a great many academically gifted undergraduates and postgraduates.
If we would compare leeds and loughborough uni only in terms of study( mechanical engg) which is better?

I have a question. Firstly, I am planning on choosing Leeds as my main option. I have two unis, UofL and Leeds Arts. The question is, does it matter which university you go to, like the good life in Leeds applies only to UofL or to the other unis as well? Also would be great if you have some info on Leeds Arts uni

I'm considering leeds for a foundation year in engineering.. do you know how foundation students are treated and how they mesh with the rest of the newcomers? do first years feel superiority?
I did my foundation year in leeds for engineering I'm in my last year now and tbh I didn't have a lot of British friends i spent most of my uni years with other Internationals.... although i did spend a year and a half studying from home and I never lived in student halls so depending on ur situation it could be totally different for you! If u have any questions i can answer them for u ☺️
I did a foundation year at UoL (now in my 2nd year) and tbh it felt no different than being in 1st year. But this was as covid restrictions were just happening so everything was a mess
Most people can't tell what year your in unless you tell them, and even then they're not gonna care bar the odd joke. Besides, Freshers are a joke to everyone above anyway, so don't worry about that. Everyone is very inclusive here - current student

UCL, KCL, ICL yes because of their reputation, but i wouldnt say that queen mary is any harder to get into than unis outside of london.
@@rue2228 It depends on subject. I don't think KCL is good at engineering subjects. It seems that Queen mary is pretty good at medicine, law and materials related subjects.
Is University of Hull known in the UK? Has it got a good reputation in the UK? I know it is not a part of the Russel Group unis. I have chosen Hull because it is in my budget as an international student. Also, its business school is accredited by AMBA and AACSB. What’s the perception of the uni? Can anybody from the UK please give any idea?

@@habib6806 I applied to both in 2017, I ended up firming Leeds because the city seemed so much nicer. Sheffield seemed so spread out (in terms of the university) whereas with Leeds it's all in one area about a ten minute walk away from the centre of town. I don't know if that helps or anything, but I think Leeds is a lot nicer!
Don't reccomend during covid, their support and teaching has been extremely lackluster.

@@josephbrennan370 I've waited for weeks for replies to emails from lecturers, 2 months for a reply about mental health support, and at one point some modules didn't even have online lectures, he lazily uploaded a "lecture script". I've asked around to my friends at different universities and they were shocked at this. Do not reccomend Leeds.
Wow, that’s a contrast to my experience. I study engineering at the university and my studies were severely impacted due to personal circumstances. The school has been nothing but helpful and supportive. I would get in touch with SU to see how they can assist you.

Leeds university is not worth it for international students. Just starting with racism, people are just odd. A girl sat in the common room ans just started laughing very loudly when a group of guys were talking in an Indian accent. A girl in my dorm, Jessica shitface, kept waking everybody up at 2-4 in the morning weekly, and the warden did nothing about it. It was charles morris hall if that suits you, and the warden was adam richardson. IT Teachers mock Indian students and fiddle with their things in class. Adam Richardson abuses international students. The list just goes on. I know peole say Londoners are much ruder, but I have met the nicest and most caring people there. Also, it was much more diverse in London than Leeds. So international student, make that your target, not LEEDS.😅

Leeds students houses are so over priced £115 plus a week for bang average houses and very run down, leeds night life is crap compared to places like manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle to name a few northern city’s
