  • Welcome to The Vintage Read Show!
My name is Shauna and I upload 3/4 times a week, so make sure you subscribe and hit the notify bell to ensure you don't miss any.
Every Wednesday evening we meet up for A Gossip Before Bed, in our PJs and your favourite beverage.
Weekly there is A Snarky Snippet, in-depth book reviews, Premieres with live chat, and well-researched opinion pieces on current Royal events.
We have a lovely, friendly community here so join in via the comments and share your thoughts,
I look forward to reading them!
Shauna x A short excerpt from my review of Chapter 10 of The Housekeeper's Diary by Wendy Berry illustrates the strain the staff close to Prince Charles and Princess Diana were under!
We get an insight into the positive effect that the arrival of Ken Wharfe had and the cozy nights Diana would have with Prince William and Prince Harry snuggling in front of the television.
Prince Charles headed back to Klosters for a skiing holiday which upset everybody very much as it was only one year after the tragic accident that took Hugh Lindsey's life.
There were new editions to the family too as "Tigger" had pups!
A fascinating insight into what life was really like at Highgrove.

It's very kind of you to understand Diana and sympathise with her, it still doesn't excuse cruelty for me.

I agree. Compassion is wonderful, but my guess is Diana could have controlled herself if a good looking man was involved instead of Evelyn. I read the book and Diana repeatedly treated her dresser badly.

It really was awful how both parents handled things and in Harry you can see the imprint of the very poor behavior !

It goes back to the need for wealthy to employ those in their manor…to provide employment..either on the big estate outside or inside ..so they almost invented jobs to employ their tenants..

I got lucky and found a copy on E-Bay that had just been listed so I snapped it up for about $30 with free shipping here in the US. I have seen it selling for much more on other used book sites.

@@defenestrate4957 Isn't that the greatest feeling!? I picked up a copy of a childhood favorite for $28 that was selling for $200 or so on most sites. It was ex lib, but I didn't care - I just wanted to read it again! And it turned out to be a very fine edition, too. 😊

Great observation about the curry incident. Any one who has ever fasted can attest that your senses become more acutely and sensitive to any smell or taste. Something like being pregnant.

You’re absolutely right I was a vegetarian for 10 years and I could not stand the smell of me. I remember walking in a southern home and they were making a southern recipe that included pork I could not take it, so I absolutely agree however, Diana’s personality disorder I think had a lot to do with her reaction because I would’ve never screamed at the person that was making that pork dish.

  • @lisakeell7343

Thank you for your review - I agree about the smell causing a possible reaction - like a recovering alcoholic smells can heighten the problem - being witness to both in my family the mental anguish is the hardest to overcome and in our case it didn't end well.

Such a rude behaviour! But I've never been crazy about Diana. There was something sweet and bla bla bla about her, but tons of falsity too.

I'm with you. After reading the book, I saw a lot of narcissistic behavior on her part, which I'd truly hoped not to see.

I read a book, but I can not remember the name of it. It was about Prince Charles and the torturous childhood and teenage years he experienced. Heightened by the fact his father wanted him to attend the Scottish school that the duke himself attended. It was so interesting and really opened my eyes to how sensitive Charles was and how that was mistaken as a weakness. But, Charles didn't allow the bullies to change him. It actually opened my eyes to how strong Charles actually is and how he is an individual despite efforts to make him the perfect prince of wales.
I think what Charles went through there is part of the reason he can't completely close the door to harry, despite Harry's disgusting behaviour and attitude. I believe there is not a sliver of a chance that lady Diana would have copped for a single second the post 2018 Harry. This unfortunately leads me to believe his actions are based in selfishness rather than psychological issues.

Interesting video and enjoyed it as usual. I think they both behaved like such children and was thoroughly sick of them at the time of their divorce. That was in instance when the children really did suffer as a result.

Listening to this 1 month later, I agree with food odors. My daughter and I both had bariatric surgery years ago. Food odors made us ill. My daughter had it worse than I. My daughter, who adores coffee, could not tolerate the smell of freshly ground coffee beans in the store. I could not stand the smells of food cooking, especially fried food odors. That said, being rude is not necessary - I simply let my husband know what was going on and removed myself from the area. He was not offended, and I knew he and the family needed to eat. That sensitivity eventually diminished

You have asked what book we would like to hear you review. I would like to suggest. A king story, the memoir of the Duke of Windsor.
It is out of print, but I have a copy if you are interested. Would love to hear your perspective. It was written by the Duke in 1947. Please let me know what you think.

Thank you for introducing me to The Queen of our Times Book by Robert Hardman. It is a great read. What is so striking in the early chapters on Edwards abdication and his subsequent behavior is the shocking similarities between him and Harry. I wish you would do a show on that. Their same self absorption and all the times they both made stupid demands on the family when much more important things were happening. Like the death of the Queen or a World War!
