- In this tutorial you will learn how to tie a bucktail jig, one of the most reliable fishing lures. This fishing lure can be used to catch fish anywhere in the world. Stop spending 10$ on single lures, learn to tie this and you will be catching all sorts of fish for a fraction of the price. Learning how to tie your own custom bucktail jigs is relatively simple. All you need is the correct supplies, and the right teacher. I want to share with you one of my new hobbies that I have recently gotten into. This will be a crash course for anyone who wants to learn how to tie bucktail jigs.

Ive been a fly tier and fly fisher for almost 30 years. I’m just getting into bait fishing and conventional tackle after all these years. Your videos are great. Seeing you tie this ...I can’t wait to apply what I’ve learned to make some killer jigs. I’m thinking of long flowing eels, wide mullet and bunker jigs, slender silversides. Putting them on a jig but taking these bucktails to a new level. Give me a challenge, maybe can collaborate!

Not a bad start but it's a bit excessive of an amount of string to keep it all on. Place some buck hair, wrap it, fold it over and wrap again. This way it's harder to pull off the jig and a cleaner end result.

Hey Skipper, to tighten vise lift up on the lever handle after the dial is turned just enough to hold the hook in place. Freeze frame at 4.30 you see where the pin in the handle is closer to the dial? If you lift up the handle at that point it would put the pin farther away from the dial tightening up the vise. Think of it working like a pair of vise grip pliers.

I haven't tied a fly in probably 20 years. I had the idea to try tying up my own bucktails and what do I find but Hey Skipper sharing the knowledge. Great video, very informative. How about a follow up video tying more jigs? I was thinking maybe adding some small rubber skirting material along with the bucktail to see what how it works out.

I took apart one of those lures that I bought at a fishing show for $8.00. The only difference is that he ties the feathers to the the shank of the hook..

Great video reminds me of when I used to make my own spinners and tail flies do have one suggestion I found out that if you coat your string with beeswax it waterproof it and keep stuff locked in really well never had to use an epoxy either with this method great video love the channel keep up the good work

I have watched most of your videos and this year asked a new surf rod and reel and a saltwater fly tying kit. I am having such fun creating my own lures. I have one that mimics a menhaden for rockfish another to use with tarpon and some smaller ones for fishing creeks off the Susquehanna. Would love to hear if you are in the Havre de Grace area. We kayak fish around there.

Hey Skipper and hello from So.Csl. Just a quick suggestion. Instead of using tooth picks to spread your epoxy ... maybe try using acetone brushes to spread it, it will allow you to spread the epoxy more smoothly and much quicker. The brushes are cheap and just throw them away after one use. great vids man, keep it up.

Great video, makes me want to start tying my own bucktails. Few ideas that might help with tying these: if you put the vice on the eyelet with the weighted head of the hook pointing towards the vice, you could shape the tails easier. Nylon thread would last longer I think. Uv cure epoxy would also help I think. That way you don't have to wait for slow cure epoxies nor race against the clock with fast cure epoxies. Just place, tie, add uv cure epoxy, possibly adjust things a bit and hit it with some uv light when you're ready to set the epoxy. ( kits of uv cure epoxy for fly tying often include uv flashlights along with three viscosity levels, thin, medium and thick. )

13:15 Bruv, for the flashes, I suggest not to trim it but fold it. So, if you want four flashes, just use two pieces, tie it, fold and finish it off.

I do saltwater fishing on a head boat for Florida kingfish, bucktail will be may chose
Most sewing thread is made of cotton which will not last as long as nylon threads. You can eliminate the time that you are spending using two-part epoxy and spinning your fly to dry it, by using fly tying head cement. A bottle will last you a long time. It is applied with a bodkin or toothpick, whatever. It dries instantly, thus no time spent mixing your epoxy and waiting for it to dry.

Key skipper, I have a quick random question, I do cod haddock pollack fishing on party boat all year round and I experience that the bait sticks to the reels after I’m done fishing no matter how much I rinse it. Can u recommend something for me to clean my gear after all the bait already dried onto the reel. Thank you.
use the lever on the end of the vise. snug up the hook in the vice with the roller screw, then flip the lever out straight to lock it....just a hint to make life easier...

Hi hey hello thx for the tutorial but I think I have an idea for the next one maybe attach a swimbait like a 3 Inch kytech and then wrap it with the bucktail stuff and I liked the look of the prawn it looks so good I would throw it for most of the fish I could catch but I would like to see how it was done love every single video u do keep up the passion all other TH-camr do it 1 and don’t do it again much love for u

You can use super glue, nail polish remover, or even uv resin. I really like uv resin personally.

Hey skipper I was recently in a bad motorcycle hit and run. Ispent a month in the hospital.... its going to be about a year before I can walk again. I think you helped me find a way to make some income. Do you have some links to bulk furs and flash? I have 150lbs of soft lead so I'm going to pour and air brush my own jig heads to save money. Ive learned so much of what I know about pier fishing from Asians. They're playing for keeps and so do I. Do a video where you find a random Asian guy at the pier and ask what he's doing and then copy what he does to try to catch fish. It'd be kind of funny and informative
Instead of tying it. I use plumber tape. It bonds onto it self after wrapping.

@@HeySkipper I am here in South Texas just out side corpus christi on the nueces river. I fished every day since October. Had some pretty good luck with shrimp,finger mullet and chicken hearts.i have caught catfish,reds,black drum,trout, buffalo fish some one told me and a gar.
@@benklesel3599 hey, just from personal experience, since you were using shrimp try ti make a redish orange bucktail with some white to imitate a shrimp. It worked for me, and i used a 4g jighead. But i have not tried it in lakes, as i fish on a beach.

Have you found out how to use your vice properly? Put the lever straight and tighten it so you can still love the hook and when its in a good position brand the lever done and it will set the hook properly thanks for a great video

That’s not how you tighten the vise, the handle is on a cam. Same idea as locking down fence on table saw, good video explaining everything.
You are using the vise wrong. The round dial you are turning is an adjusting dial for the cam lever on the back of the vise.
Lol I was just about to comment about that. It's like the same quick release mechanism for bikes.

nice vid. but please watch a couple of Fly tying vids, which is essentially what you are doing.
The jig looks good , but there are a lot of things you could do differently to make it easier . Instead of using epoxy use contact cement or finger nail polish. I've been tying Flys and jigs for 12 years . I always watch other people's videos so I can learn new tricks and tips . I'm not trying to say your doing it wrong just trying to give you a new trick to add to your tool box

@@HeySkipper at least stock up on lead, the price always goes up...$.90 per lb. now. I literally just made my first run of jigheads just like those. 3-D eyes made by WTM, size 2.5 mm is a must have...but all of the hook sizes and info are etched into the molds... I'm starting to get several molds in the collection.

I agree I love epoxy!! I'm sorry it's just my preference lol when I look at the jig it just freaks me out that the thread part is almost as big as the head of the jig I'm ocd and have anxiety so it just freaks me out a liccke bit
But I figure superglue is thinner so it might absorb into the thread much better making a tighter connection
Also thank you for replying I'm a huge fan!! Although I don't have my fishing reels anymore I still want to try one day!! I had to pawn my reels for the lack of having a job its not that easy to find one I have s 6000 reel left I just don't have a handle for it

Really like the video, but I was cringing when I saw you using those really nice sharp scissors to trim the hair around the jig head. I use a razor blade, and save my scissor edge.
I use a box cutter and I also use Sally's nail hardener. The nail hardener absorbs into the thread so I do about 2 to 3 coats. Once its dry then use the epoxy finish to give it a high gloss look.

Dont use. The Scissors to cut off the deer hair on the jig ruin them big time especially if u use to cut deer hair. I use a razor blade they cheap n no worries on messing up a good scissors
