  • In this tutorial I am tying "Spro" style Bucktail Jigs in real time as fluke fishing season is here. In addition to tying these Bucktail's I will review what they could imitate in the rivers or ocean.
    If I had to choose one color Bucktail jig it would be a white jig with a white buck tail and Crystal Flash. After many years fishing different colors, White and Glow white were the most productive for catching Fluke or Summer Flounder. There were times on my boat when 3 of us would be using 3 different colors to see what they were biting on. The vast majority of the time white was the winning color. In addition to the white bucktail, I would tip the jig with a 3 or 4 MM white or chartreuse "Gulp Swimming Mullet" for the ultimate Fluke jig. I also had good success tying a small teaser above my jig about 18"-20".

      Hi, Sorry for the late reply. I have been in and out of the hospital with Leukemia since Mid October. I've been doing everything the doctors ask and following their regiment closely. Going in to February I will be spending another month in hospital trying to stomp this cancer out for Spring fishing.

      If you save samples of the baitfish and insects in the waters you are fishing it will make you a better fly tyer and fly fisherman. I usually save my samples in %70 rubbing alcohol and it keeps them good for a loooong time.

      @@adamsflybox So sorry to hear about your Leukemia diagnosis. I lost my father to leukemia. My prayers for your fight against this cancer.
      Great video I have been tying my crappie jigs for years. I just got started tying saltwater jigs for Speckled trout and Redfish. Where do you buy your jig heads. I am having trouble finding them. Thank you and good luck.

      Glad you enjoyed the video. There is nothing better than smashing fish on buck tails you tied... Especially with a deer tail you harvested.

    what vise are you using? Where can I find the same one

      I am using a Regal Engineering Vice. It's about 30 years old and still works great for small to large sized flies. It isn't large enough for tying extremely large flies however it's a great vice. Regal probably has different sized vices depending on the size flies you are tying. You can probably Google Regal Vices and find it.

      So after I harvest a deer. I cut the tail off and skin it with as much fat as I can trim off. Then I wash the deer tail in hot soapy water until al the soap is out. Then I shake off as much exes water outside. At this point I wipe the tail down with paper towels to get as much moisture out of the tail. Finally I pour Kosher Crystal salt on the skin side and leave it up to dry. Change the salt the following week and you are good to start tying. After you have done this process if you have several tails you want to dye a particular color this is the time to heat soak the tails and add the dye.

    Have you ever made these just using crystal flash? Bucktail is rather expensive. No bucks where I live.

      Yes, I have used synthetic's and Krystal flash for my Buck Tail Jigs and fly streamers. Not sure where you live but if you have deer hit on the side of the road you can use a pair of hedge trimmers or a knife to cut it off. Then you use Kosher Crystal salt on the skin side to preserve it. We have dead deer all over the roads around here. Especially around November when the deer go into rut.

      @@adamsflybox Lol, no deer here on the Big Island of Hawaii. Thanks for your reply and tip though. Too bad wild boar hair isn't the same as bucktail.. Got plenty of those around. Now you have me thinking.....

    • @adamsflybox
      @adamsflybox  5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      I'm sure you can tie some flies with wild boar hair... We saw a bunch of boar, Ram, and wild turkey on the big Island back in 2014. I tried for some bone fish while I was out but the ocean was raging. I did catch some trumpet fish and other small reef fish.
