  • Who was Polycarp? In this video, we'll discuss the history of the Apostolic Father and his contribution to the future generations of Christianity.
    Excerpt:
Polycarp was the Bishop of Smyrna from the early to middle second century AD. He had a good relationship with leaders and members of other churches in the region. This was common among the Apostolic Fathers, that is, those who personally had been taught by the Apostles.
In about AD 98, Clement of Rome wrote an epistle to the church in Corinth on behalf of his church, and Ignatius of Antioch wrote epistles to six other churches in 107 in addition to his epistle addressed to Polycarp. These eight epistles are still extant, that is, still in existence, but there are many epistles referred to by ancient writers that have been lost. Writing epistles to other churches was a common practice among the Apostolic Fathers, and they normally emphasized good behavior, church unity, and correct doctrine-especially about who Jesus Christ is.

Dude is an underrated Saint. Everyone could learn from this man, he imitated Christ for long as he was here with us. Even in disagreement with his brothers, he still found a way to settle disagreements. Faced with heretical people, he didn’t flinch. Faced with death? He didn’t flinch. He welcomed death because he knows what our Lord will give us.

He was truly a great man of God, following not only in his teacher's footsteps (the Apostle John), but most importantly, in our Lord's footsteps.

Polycarp, the connection between Jesus Christ's Apostles and the authority of the Catholic Church?? NO! He may have been a bishop, but he never has Apostolic Authority to pass on to anyone!!

I guess you didn’t see he whole video.
It said he was appointed by John the apostle, Polycarp appointed Irenaus
      IRENAEUS
“It is possible, then, for everyone in every church, who may wish to know the truth, to contemplate the tradition of the apostles which has been made known to us throughout the whole world. And we are in a position to enumerate those who were instituted bishops by the apostles and their successors down to our own times, men who neither knew nor taught anything like what these heretics rave about” (Against Heresies 3:3:1 [A.D. 189]).
“But since it would be too long to enumerate in such a volume as this the successions of all the churches, we shall confound all those who, in whatever manner, whether through self-satisfaction or vainglory, or through blindness and wicked opinion, assemble other than where it is proper, by pointing out here the successions of the bishops of the greatest and most ancient church known to all, founded and organized at Rome by the two most glorious apostles, Peter and Paul-that church which has the tradition and the faith with which comes down to us after having been announced to men by the apostles. For with this Church, because of its superior origin, all churches must agree, that is, all the faithful in the whole world. And it is in her that the faithful everywhere have maintained the apostolic tradition” (ibid., 3:3:2).
“Polycarp also was not only instructed by apostles, and conversed with many who had seen Christ, but was also, by apostles in Asia, appointed bishop of the church in Smyrna, whom I also saw in my early youth, for he tarried [on earth] a very long time, and, when a very old man, gloriously and most nobly suffering martyrdom, departed this life, having always taught the things which he had learned from the apostles, and which the Church has handed down, and which alone are true. To these things all the Asiatic churches testify, as do also those men who have succeeded Polycarp down to the present time” (ibid., 3:3:4).
“Since therefore we have such proofs, it is not necessary to seek the truth among others which it is easy to obtain from the Church; since the apostles, like a rich man [depositing his money] in a bank, lodged in her hands most copiously all things pertaining to the truth, so that every man, whosoever will, can draw from her the water of life. . . . For how stands the case? Suppose there arise a dispute relative to some important question among us, should we not have recourse to the most ancient churches with which the apostles held constant conversation, and learn from them what is certain and clear in regard to the present question?” (ibid., 3:4:1).
“[I]t is incumbent to obey the presbyters who are in the Church-those who, as I have shown, possess the succession from the apostles; those who, together with the succession of the episcopate, have received the infallible charism of truth, according to the good pleasure of the Father. But [it is also incumbent] to hold in suspicion others who depart from the primitive succession, and assemble themselves together in any place whatsoever, either as heretics of perverse minds, or as schismatics puffed up and self-pleasing, or again as hypocrites, acting thus for the sake of lucre and vainglory. For all these have fallen from the truth” (ibid., 4:26:2).
“The true knowledge is the doctrine of the apostles, and the ancient organization of the Church throughout the whole world, and the manifestation of the body of Christ according to the succession of bishops, by which succession the bishops have handed down the Church which is found everywhere” (ibid., 4:33:8
But I guess that’s not evidence

It’s so amazing how we have this knowledge from the original men who had the privilege to learn from the actual apostles ! People who saw Christ and ate with him. It’s mind blowing . Especially since modern people treat it as if we have no way of knowing the real scriptures or if these people even existed.

You have NO GOOD evidence that “Jesus” ever existed and even if so that doesn’t mean he was divine/a god. There are NO contemporary scholars/historians from when “Jesus” was supposed to have lived. Josephus came along later and the little he wrote about “Jesus” is seen as a forgery…same with Tacitus (56-120 ad) was born after “Jesus” supposedly died and his writings are taken from hearsay information so not credible. You can’t lump a bunch of anecdotal evidence together to make good evidence…doesn’t work that way. There is no record of “Jesus’” death from crucifixion

My friend, thank you for this upload but you left out the most important parts of the story. How Polycarp served dinner to those that came to arrest him, how he prayed over them and forgave them before being taken away in chains. How after being thrown out of the chariot on the way to his execution at the stadium...a voice was heard coming from heaven like the Archangel, "Play the Man Polycarp!" Or in modern parlance Stand Strong Like a Man Polycarp! Straight from the Throne of God, Which Everyone Heard and was recorded in Roman history! The fire being set around Polycarp ballooned like a room large and wide around Polycarp and did not consume his flesh but he seemed to transform within the flames while in prayer to God, and a sweet scent of Cinnamon and Jasmine seemed to permeate the air. Finally, the judge ordered the executioner to thrust a spear into the side of Polycarp which he did as the flames were not killing the old, spirit filled Bishop of Smyrna as the crazed mob wished, so they plunged the spear into Polycarp killing him lest the mob begin to believe in the Power of the Living God. God was truly with Polycarp His beloved servant.

Also, Polycarp and Ignatius were both disciples of John the disciple of Christ who was imprisoned on Patmos and died at age 110 years. Polycarp and Ignatius were both with him for years before that. These men carried the torch of fire and faith brilliantly and faithfully for the rest of their lives.

With all the deception during this little season Rev 20:3, one is called to question all things. When a narrative names a group of men earthly fathers, it should raise flags, as to who is the source of the information being provided. Matthew 23:9 KJV “And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven.” Are we to ignore Christ and trust a narrative and time line provided by man? Matthew 16:6 KJV “Then Jesus said unto them, Take heed and beware of the leaven of the Pharisees and of the Sadducees.” While it may seem to be a small thing, it goes directly against the command of our Master, The Christ. John 14:15 KJV “If ye love me, keep my commandments.” Granted we are called to seek, however believe a great deal of discernment must be used in these matters.

    The Glory of the Cross
See him there at Calvary dressed out in full array
The penalty for sinners Gods justice on display
The slaughtered lamb now speaking, His soul is open wide
I'm smitten and forsaken, My God My God Oh Why!
A mocking crowd comes tempting, with waging heads allied
A crown of thorns they gave him, set hard above his eye
Yet some in sore amazement, let out a desperate cry!
'Tis Jesus friend of sinners, My God My God Oh Why
Then the earth began to tremble and the sun now shut its eyes
Lest sin should reign eternal, the cursed of God must die
With troubled hearts we see him, but faithful we must be
This blessed act of mercy , t'was My God My God for me!
His sheep had all been scattered, alone and all undone
His Fathers heart now grieving, they'd soon have aid to come
His work was now accomplished, the trembling cup lay bare
Sins darkness now upon Him, as he hung in great despair
Before the day was finished, His parched lips would rehearse
The only words befitting, My God My God I Thirst
Through smitten, bruised, abandoned, faith eye would let him see
In three days he would be risen, with the keys of victory
At the dawning of the morning on the first day of the week
He left the grave behind him, now gone to tend his sheep
He spoke with his disciples, at a dinner by the sea
Three times he asked one question, Peter lovest me?
The Righteous King Eternal, t'was this man from Galilee
By faith, you can receive him and live life full and free
All nations now are groaning, while silent hearts just cry
A broken heart of sorrows, O' our God will not deny
Return thy tears of sorrow, to the One who died for thee
No! You have not been forsaken, just but look to Calvary

For those who are wondering the word "bishop" means overseer. It came from the biblical Greek word for overseer "episkopos", this later transliterated to become the Latin word "episcopi", then Old English "biscop" and finally bishop. Protestant churches do not use the word Bishop because of the association with the Catholic church but the role of overseer was a biblical role. Polycarp and Irenaeus are generally held as Church fathers by all Christians and were overseers "episkopos".

The Greek word means entirely, completely or universally. The early church christians did not use the word Catholic to describe themselves, they called themselves Christians (same sounding Greek word), μαθητής ("mathētḗs" or "disciple").If you thinking that Catholics have a lineage back to the Apostle Peter, heritage counts for nothing with God and Jesus, just look at the Pharisees who claimed linage to Moses. Jesus rejected them because their deeds were evil and they rejected Jesus. They also refused to repent. Its the same for anyone.

“If Abraham were your father you would believe Me because he testified of Me!”
      So right!
      Lineage means nothing.
From the beginning, the devil hijacks words!
      In the garden with Eve.
      In the wilderness with Jesus.
The Catholics hijacked the word “Christian”.
And misrepresented it across the world.
      European Jews call themselves “semites”.
Without a drop of Semitic blood.
      Then there’s “white evangelicals.”
      What is that exactly?
They say Peter was the first Pope.
      How?
Popes started 350 years after the resurrection.
      So did Roman Catholicism.
They killed biblical Christians and called them heretics.
The Fourth of July firework named “Roman candle” is a term taken from Christian martyrs burned by the Romans.
      They laughingly called them that.
In all this, Christ gets the last laugh.
And martyrs like Polycarp have been in the Presence of The Lord ever since.

That same Church started to call itself the Catholic Church at the turn of the century. Many of the Bishops of the Catholic Church were actually taught the faith by the Apostles and chosen to lead the Church by the Apostles. Easter is an Anglo Saxon word from the Oestre of the Angles in Germania and Volga. However since the narrator is speaking English he would use an English word.
As you do Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday or Sunday...english equivalents of old names in paganry: Woden, Thor, Frigga, Saturn, Sola...some which were tutonic substitutes for Roman gods.
      Latins use Pasca or variants.
We don't know where Easter or Oestre came from. There is one sentence in an ancient linguistic manuscript that is based on a guess. The rest is modern imagination and much ado about nothing

@@joelapp So, Saint Paul called himself father as in the above scripture. The term Pope is an Englishization of the Latin word Papa which is father or daddy. The Roman Bishop isn't the only Bibshop called Pope. The Coptic Christians also call their head bishop Pope as to other Eastern Christians. But yes the use of the title Pope was not necessairly used in the first or second century. Episkopos would have been used. Episkopos means Elder, which English speaking Christians call Bishop. But all ordained church clergy would have been called father or Papa at the time.
