  • Who was Irenaeus? In this video, we'll provide an in-depth exploration about the life and work of Irenaeus, who was an early Christian bishop in mid-late 100 AD.
    Excerpt:
Irenaeus of Lyon claimed when he was young he listened to polycarp teach in Smyrna of Asia Minor. Polycarp had listened to the Apostle John teach when polycarp himself was young this means that Irenaeus got to hear reliable accounts of Jesus life and teaching from eyewitnesses although the detail of Irenaeus' birth are unknown, it's plausible that Irenaeus was a native of Smyrna.

Gnosticism is almost certainly much older than the time of Irenaeus. in his Adversus Heresies, he descibes Gnostic teachers of his day as having "schools". how long had these "schools" been in existence, at the time of Irenaeous writings? the Gospel of John was writ to refute Gnostic's, and before that was writ, Paul wrote to refute Gnostics. it is very likely that Gnosticism was the first form of early Christianity. very likely, that early Christianity came from the Essene's. very likely too, that John the Baptist was an Essene.

You conveniently left out the fact that Irenaeus made a point of listing the first 13 Catholic popes from St. Peter through then pope Eleuthera, and that he stated the reason he listed them was to prove Apostolic succession as the way the papacy was continued from St. Peter forward.

This is what I've found. Irenaeus did not make specific references to popes in his writings. The concept of the papacy as an institutionalized office with a list of specific popes and their reigns developed in later centuries. Irenaeus, a 2nd-century Christian theologian, primarily focused on theological matters, particularly combating heresies in his work "Against Heresies."

in the book "against heresies" *Third book Chapter 3*: What true tradition is 2.*
Irenaeus explains exactly why every church must obey the supremacy of Rome. There Irenaeus explains that every church can enumerate the apostolic succession, but he only does so for Rome, because otherwise it would go beyond the scope.
      Conclusion :
So it is a misstatement to claim that the primacy of the Bishop of Rome is a later concept. that he explained and defended it against false teachers as early as the 2nd century AD.

Self-identifying as a Christian is not only a Gnostic problem, it's a big problem in the denominational world today. It would be better if members of denominations would simply reject God altogether so that the remaining Christians (true Christians) could be manifested.
Pretend Christians make it difficult for the world to see what it is to be a follower of Christ - which I guess is the goal. If you can't identify a Christian then you're liable to think it's just a figment of people's imagination.

    • @user-uc1yb7hy2n

Great question. It’s to prove Jesus wasn’t 30 years old when he died. The Gnostics said in correspondence with the 30 Aeons Jesus was 30. Irenaeus said Jesus had attained the level of “Master” which would make him 50. (See Pirkei Avot 5:21-22). It’s just a cultural argument against “30 Aeons”
Irenaeus actually reckons Jesus’ age earlier in that section by counting the Passovers from his Baptism. If I’m following him correctly he reckons Jesus’ age to 33.

Yes, if he was actually contradicting his earlier statement. Cultural norms at the time would prohibit Jesus from being a Master at merely 30. Also the Gnostics said he was Baptized, Preached, and Died all in the span of 12 months of his 30th year. It (the 50 year old statement) appears to be a rhetorical statement.

There is one God almighty. He who formed the world, he who fashioned man, he who is God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, above whom there is no other God. He is the father of our Lord Jesus Christ. For almost all the different sects of heretics admit that there is one God; but then, by there pernicious doctrines, they change this truth into error.

*The first Christians, until now, believed in the Trinity (the eternal God with His Word and Spirit). Don't tell lies and make up stories about other people's beliefs.*
In this somewhat brief post, I will be citing from a diverse range of Christian writings, dating from as early the first century. Some of these works include snippets from the Apostolic fathers, e.g. the men who knew the Apostles and/or were commissioned by them, as well as from pseudepigraphical material, writings which were falsely attributed to Apostles who did not composed them. It will become evident from this diverse range of sources that belief in the Trinity, Christ’s Incarnation and the Hypostatic Union (that Jesus is truly God and human) was early, widespread and universal.
      *CLEMENT OF ROME*
      Chapter 58.
Submission the Precursor of Salvation. Let us, therefore, flee from the warning threats pronounced by Wisdom on the disobedient, and yield submission to His all-holy and glorious name, that we may stay our trust upon the most hallowed name of His majesty. Receive our counsel, and you shall be without repentance. *For, as God lives, and as the Lord Jesus Christ and the Holy Spirit* live - both the faith and hope of the elect, he who in lowliness of mind, with instant gentleness, and without repentance has observed the ordinances and appointments given by God- the same shall obtain a place and name in the number of those who are being saved through Jesus Christ, through whom is glory to Him for ever and ever. Amen. (Clement of Rome, First Epistle) Clement was a disciple of the Apostles who was even mentioned by Paul as a fellow laborer whose name was written in heaven: “I exhort Euodia and Syntyche to be of the same mind in the Lord. I ask you also, true companion, help those women who labored with me in the gospel, with Clement also, and with my other fellow laborers, whose names are in the Book of Life.” Philippians 4:2-3 Modern English Version (MEV) Clement attributes to the Father, Son and Spirit a stereotypical formula that the Old Testament ascribes to no other heavenly Being except Yahweh: “Then she said, ‘Please let the king remember Yahweh your God, that the avenger of blood destroy not any more, lest they destroy my son.’ He said, ‘As Yahweh lives, not one hair of your son shall fall to the earth.’” 2 Samuel 14:11 World English Bible (WEB) “Elijah said to him, ‘Elisha, please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to Jericho.’ He said, ‘As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.’ So they came to Jericho… Elijah said to him, ‘Please wait here, for Yahweh has sent me to the Jordan.’ He said, ‘As Yahweh lives, and as your soul lives, I will not leave you.’ Then they both went on.” 2 Kings 2:4, 6 WEB
“Micaiah said, ‘As Yahweh lives, I will say what my God says.’” 2 Chronicles 18:13 WEB
“‘Therefore behold, the days come,’ says Yahweh, ‘that it will no more be said, “As Yahweh lives, who brought up the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt;” but, “As Yahweh lives, who brought up the children of Israel from the land of the north, and from all the countries where he had driven them.” I will bring them again into their land that I gave to their fathers.’” Jeremiah 16:14-15 WEB
“So Zedekiah the king swore secretly to Jeremiah, saying, ‘As Yahweh lives, who made us this soul, I will not put you to death, neither will I give you into the hand of these men who seek your life.’” Jeremiah 38:16 WEB
“Though you, Israel, play the prostitute, yet don’t let Judah offend; and don’t come to Gilgal, neither go up to Beth Aven, nor swear, ‘As Yahweh lives.’” Hosea 4:15 WEB
Seeing that Clement applied this OT expression to the Father, Son and Spirit, this highlights his Trinitarian beliefs. I.e., for Clement, God, Christ and the Holy Spirit are the very Yahweh whom the OT prophets worshiped.
The next citations need no commentary.Z

      *Epistula Apostolorum (140-150 A.D.)*
1 The book which Jesus Christ revealed unto his disciples: and how that Jesus Christ revealed the book for the company (college) of the apostles, the disciples of Jesus Christ, even the book which is for all men. Simon and Cerinthus, the false apostles, concerning whom it is written that no man shall cleave unto them, for there is in them deceit wherewith they bring men to destruction. (The book hath been written) that ye may be not flinch nor be troubled, and depart not from the word of the Gospel which ye have heard. Like as we heard it, we keep it in remembrance and have written it for the whole world. We commend you our sons and our daughters in joy in the name of God the Father the Lord of the world, and of Jesus Christ. Let grace be multiplied upon you.
2 We, John, Thomas, Peter, Andrew, James, Philip, Batholomew, Matthew, Nathanael, Judas Zelotes, and Cephas, write unto the churches of the east and the west, of the north and the south, the declaring and imparting unto you that which concerneth our Lord Jesus Christ: we do write according as we have seen and heard and touched him, after that he was risen from the dead: and how that he revealed unto us things mighty and wonderful and true.
3 This know we: that our Lord and Redeemer Jesus Christ is God the Son of God, who was sent of God the Lord of the whole world, the maker and creator of it, who is named by all names, and high above all powers, Lord of lords, King of kings, Ruler of rulers, the heavenly one, that sitteth above the cherubim and seraphim at the right hand of the throne of the Father: who by his word made the heavens, and formed the earth and that which is in it, and set bounds to the sea that it should not pass: the deeps also and fountains, that they should spring forth and flow over the earth: the day and the night, the sun and the moon, did he establish, and the stars in the heaven: that did separate the light from the darkness: that called forth hell, and in the twinkling of an eye ordained the rain of the winter, the snow (cloud), the hail, and the ice, and the days in their several seasons: that maketh the earth to quake and again establisheth it: that created man in his own image, after his likeness, and by the fathers of old and the prophets is it declared (or, and spake in parables with the fathers of old and the prophets in verity), of whom the apostles preached, and whom the disciples did touch. In God, the Lord, the Son of God, do we believe, that he is the word become flesh: that of Mary the holy virgin he took a body, begotten of the Holy Spirit, not of the will (lust) of the flesh, but by the will of God: that he was wrapped in swaddling clothes in Bethlehem and made manifest, and grew up and came to ripe age, when also we beheld it.

I used to think the same about Easter being pagan but on looking into it and not so much that there is any esoteric meaning to the eggs or rabbit, there are some fuzzy (no pun intended) traditions but there's no goddess involved in what most people do. And the attempted association with a sun god fails because no one is aware of said sun god when worshipping Christ, even if it's on the wrong day.
I would say people who hold "Easter" celebrations with no mention of Christ and the Resurrection are obviously in the wrong. But if people aren't quite doing it right, I would expect the Holy spirit which can translate our groanings into prayers can also interperate meaningful worship.
Colossians 2:16 comes to mind, so long as their minds are intent on Christ.

Romans 14:2 For one believes that he may eat all things: another, who is weak, eats herbs.
Odd because it's quite clear that Jesus and the disciples ate FiSH 🐟 (so how can they be vegetarians xD) Islam came 600 years after so it's not even close to being contemporary BUT it does have some Gnostic madness in it's doctrine
"Muhammad was merely following in the footsteps of Basilides, the Valentinians, the Manicheans and other heretics of early times. (Tisdall, The Religion of the Crescent, p. 168)."
2 John 1:9 Whoever transgresses, and stays not in the doctrine of Christ, has not God. He that stays in the doctrine of Christ, he has both the Father and the Son.
2 John 1:10 If there come any to you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed:
2 John 1:11 For he that bids him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds.
      read Galatians 1
As before the rise of Islam it was rebuked
And it will go over every other doctrine
Even some that may seems never been and some before their time for example
"The late 2nd-century Christian writer Irenaeus wrote about the teachings of a Gnostic leader of his time named Basilides, who claimed:
“He did not himself suffer death, but Simon, a certain man of Cyrene, being compelled, bore the cross in his stead; so that this latter being transfigured by him, that he might be thought to be Jesus, was crucified, through ignorance and error, while Jesus himself received the form of Simon, and, standing by, laughed at them. For since he was an incorporeal power, and the Nous (mind) of the unborn father, he transfigured himself as he pleased, and thus ascended to him who had sent him, deriding them, inasmuch as he could not be laid hold of, and was invisible to all,” (Irenaeus, Against Heresies, Book I, Chapter 24, Section 4).
So basically Islam is just another gnostic schism 600 years after Christ that took in Hubal practices like bowing & kissing the kaba stone 🪨 yes you'll enjoy that full book by 2nd century Irenaeus who I believe out of many has The Spirit leading his doctrine rooted in the agreement of Jeremiah 31:32 & Hebrews 8 ending as there is no room for anything new outside the gospel

And another one the Trinity came way before the introduction of the Quran for example
      First
I have scripture and early church apostolic writers quotes
      "Ignatius a.d. 30-107
      Since, also, there is but one unbegotten Being, God, even the Father; and one only-begotten Son, God, the Word and man; and one Comforter, the Spirit of truth; and also one preaching, and one faith, and one baptism;
The Epistle of Ignatius to the Philadelphians Chapter IV"
"Tertullian (160-215). African apologist and theologian. He wrote much in defense of Christianity.
“We define that there are two, the Father and the Son, and three with the Holy Spirit, and this number is made by the pattern of salvation . . . [which] brings about unity in trinity, interrelating the three, the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. They are three, not in dignity, but in degree, not in substance but in form, not in power but in kind. They are of one substance and power, because there is one God from whom these degrees, forms and kinds devolve in the name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” (Adv. Prax. 23; PL 2.156-7)."
"Therefore neither would the Lord, nor the Holy Spirit, nor the apostles, have ever named as God, definitely and absolutely, him who was not God, unless he were truly God.... For the Spirit designates both [of them] by the name, of God - both Him who is anointed as Son, and Him who does anoint, that is, the Father."
~Irenaeus who wrote around the year AD 185
      Even his disciple agrees
“The Word alone of this God is from God himself, wherefore also the Word is God, being the being of God” (Refutation of All Heresies 10:29 [A.D. 228]).
      ~Hippolytus
"For next to God, we worship and love the Word who is from the unbegotten and ineffable God, since also He became man for our sakes, that becoming a partaker of our sufferings, He might also bring us healing. (Justin Martyr)"
"God the Word was made man for this reason, that that very nature which had sinned, fallen, and become corrupt should conquer the tyrant who had deceived it. (John of Damascus)"
      Have you NOT heard
Truly the truth is that the Ancient of Days has begotten the Messiah who is the Word of God our God who is one with God United in The Holy Spirit even all 7 and in the end will give all things back to the Ancient of Days and be subject to his Father who is All and All
      As said
Psalms 45:6 Your throne, O God(אֱ֭לֹהִים)Elohim, is for ever and ever: the scepter of your kingdom is a right scepter.
Psalms 45:7 You love righteousness, and hate wickedness: therefore God(אֱלֹהִ֣ים)Elohim your God((אֱ֭לֹהֶיךָ)Elohim, has anointed you with the oil of gladness above your fellows.
Isaiah 48:15 I, even I, have spoken; yes, I have called him: I have brought him, and he shall make his way prosperous.
Isaiah 48:16 Come you near to me, hear you this; I have not spoken in secret from the beginning; from the time that it was, there am I: and now the Lord GOD, and his Spirit, has sent me.
Isaiah 48:17 Thus said the LORD, your Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD your God which teaches you to profit, which leads you by the way that you should go.
      Let alone
"Meeting at Nicaea in present-day Turkey, the council established the equality of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit in the Holy Trinity and asserted that only the Son became incarnate as Jesus Christ. The Arian leaders were subsequently banished from their churches for heresy."
Are you trying to debate with 1st John 5 and 7? Well
      Also
during this same time, we find mention of 1 John 5:7, from about 200 AD through the 1500s. Here is a useful timeline of references to this verse:
