  • The World Sportscar Championship comes to its final round for 1966, the most famous race of them all, the 24 Hours of Le Mans. In a year which has been immortalized as Legend, 1966 was the year Ford finally beat Ferrari as the kings of Le Mans. Running for Ford and the Holman & Moody team, our star Richie has had great success thusfar this season, winning at both Daytona and Monza. But now just a week after his terrorizing accident at Spa Francorchamps, Richie and a full suite of his Ford teammates Miles, Gurney, McLaren, Hill and the rest lineup for the ultimate test. Will it be Ford or Ferrari? Could it be Axelson?

I've been dipping in and out of this video all week and every part of it is just thrilling! It reminds me of a line in a video game review I read once, where the editor gave the task of reviewing a game to two poets, instead of to a video game reviewer. The poets weren't gamers, but they made the observation that video games were like poetry because they required their audience to willingly participate in the 'illusion' of the thing they were watching. The more they put into it, the more they got out. That's how I play video games and that's how this guy plays video games.

About the downpour: Forghieri in his "Forghieri on Ferrari" book, recounts what happened in that fateful day of 1966, especially in the downpour. In short, Ferrari called in for the day the UIC (Unione Italiana Cronometristi - Italian Timekeepers' Union) to keep track of time as they always did. The Union's men were widely known across the world as being the most precise timekeepers on the planet by that time. The ACO was also happy about this because it would measure up with the then-new IBM electronic timekeeper that they've installed just that year. When the downpour occurred, the IBM system went off for several hours: nobody but Ferrari knew where cars were, what times they were doing, even laps. The ACO then asked the UIC to give that data to keep track of the cars while IBM fixed its shenanigans with their timekeeping computer. When the system was up again, it showed that Ford was about 2 laps in front: the UIC was furious because they were keeping track all the while and it was demonstrably false, the Fords were 1 lap behind if anything else. Then the ACO president just called Forghieri, the UIC team's boss and Dragoni (Ferrari's Team Principal at the time) and said "Read the air. IBM is right. We'll make up for it."
Basically 1966 was stolen according to Forghieri.

    • @JCG-Alfamonza
      @JCG-Alfamonza 3 หลายเดือนก่อน

@@dobermanproductions8184 Thing is, the Fords were known to be fast down the straight, but the Ferraris were known to handle much better in the corners. That's what drivers who drove both cars said, like Chris Amon and Mario Andretti, for example. Then, the aforementioned downpour would've really made that show, high powered cars would struggle to get up to speed out the corners, while cars with good handling would've done much better...

I loved this video, especially the intro where you set the scene beautifully.
I did a similar race in Project Cars 2 in the GT40 with my friend Mick and it was a great experience.
We did a 4 hour race with time progression and both of us driving 2 x 1 hour stints but we livened things up by adding a thunderstorm event which happened during the night at the end of Micks second stint.
I ended up driving my second stint in pouring rain and lightning with big strikes happening all round the circuit. Doing 200mph down the Mulsane in the dark with rain and lightning flashes is surreal, even if its in the virtual world.
We won the race which was great taking the lead 3 laps from the end.
Mick was dancing round the room singing "I didnt think we could do it" - such fun from a PC game... love it and I can feel your love through your videos.

I watched this entire thing (over a few sittings) and man, this was so good from start to finish even if the result itself was rather bittersweet!
The mere fact that you were able to sit down and commentate for all those laps and focus on driving was pretty impressive. It's obvious a lot of effort went into making this as immersive as possible.
(Also: That massive accident Ken Miles had down the Mulsanne Straight was pretty eerie, considering what happened later in the real world 1966, testing at Riverside.)

What a heartbreak! I'd have to watch it back to see how such a thing could happen. That said, I recently did the 1970 race on rFactor, so credit for finishing such a race with the damage on - 8 hours at the wheel is a long day. Something about watching the sun go down, racing all night, seeing the sun come back up, and knowing you're NOT QUITE HALFWAY, really breaks the spirit. I always say, the night is when the cars break, but the day after is when the drivers break. Thanks for the vid, loved every minute.

In a GPL training session last night the best I could get on the back straight was 182 mph (solo, so no slipstream) at about 7400 rpm in a Lola T-70 Mk.III. I suspect the small-block Chevy won't quite run with the big blocks at the top end, but I wonder if the gearing could be tweaked -- I just setup I raced at Sebring earlier this winter to practice with and didn't change it at all. I seem to recall getting past 190 on the oval at the Monza 10k in that car, so I think there's some more speed in there somewhere.
I also have GTR2 -- the driving-school stuff is useful. I want to do more with it when I have time. Love these sports cars.

Just to add to all the other comments fantastic, I only wish there was multiplayer and a few more of us could join in other cars!
Thought I’d have a look at the links in the description and noticed a post about a Spa24hr1967 (saloon car based) skin pack that immediately had me reaching to Wikipedia to see if there’s a clashing F1 date in 66 and whether Richie would be in Europe and free to race. He’s not he’s at Dutch F1 that weekend. But that did spark the imagination about what could Axelson, the itinerant virtual Racing troubadour, race that is modded in sim titles either in 66 or indeed 67. F2, Sportscar, USAC, SCCA, CanAM, Saloon Cars.
By far my favourite YT channel at the moment. Keep up the great work, not only keeping old sims alive, but shining a light on historic motorsport in the virtual era. Historic racing is becoming more popular by the year, and you’re doing the same in the sim space.

Jake, I cannot thank you enough for all the time and effort it must have taken to put this Le Mans race together. I am 71 (years young!) this year and I started watching the 24 hour race when Ford first started working to win at Le Mans. My parents took me to an auto show where the #2 1966 winning car was on display. At another auto show in San Francisco, I personally got to meet and to speak to Phil Hill about his experiences driving a Ford at Le Mans. At a car show in Las Vegas - the famous SEMA show, they had the latest Ford that won it's class at Le Mans and another Ford racing car on display. I have never been to Le Mans, but I have watched many videos showing a drive around the track. I doubt I will ever get there, but your presentation showed me two things: 1. What it was like driving in 1966 a Ford Mk II and 2. I never really realized the incredible speeds the drivers attain and how it looks from the drivers seat AND both the sheer skill and bravery needed to go flat out in the dark when it is extremely difficult to see coupled with the dangerous prospect of coming up on a slower car especially when it's dark. Drivers in 1966 and that era ARE some of the bravest or most "crazy" sports figures ever!! Thanks again for a wonderful realistic look at what it was to drive Le Mans in a Ford Mk II in 1966 during the day and night. Wow!!!!! Brian Gardner - Automotive award-winning journalist for an a review of the Glory Days show hosted by Dave Despain which was featured in Autoweek magazine.

The biggest graphical weakness for me was how very dim the lights on the other cars were. Dim rear lights made it hard to see cars ahead of you in at night, and after passing them, there's no headlight glare in the rear view mirror, and no bright headlamps either.

That and Ginther's misstep during his last or second-to-last stint are what kept you off the top step of the podium, I think. You have such an amazing narrative ability. Do you have any experience as a journalist? You are a natural. If they brought Top Gear or Grand Tour back I could easily see you on that show. Or get a job with Car & Driver or Road & Track, etc...

Dude! I mean. Dude! Out fucking standing work. I cannot tell you how many times I was holding my breath in this corner or that corner or while cars dodged and banged and careened in front of you.

Impressive! GTR2 has a pair of nice features: AI co-driver and savegame. I recommend to save every hour or so, otherwise AI starts to drive in "eco mode" too slow. So if you have some time you can really race a full 24h in a pair of weeks

Thanks for the amazingly cool video. Love all the details you provide. Fantastic work. AND - I simply love your voice. Compelling and mesmerizing. Do you know Campbell Scott? Actor and audio-book performer. You talk in the same way as he does, and needless to say I am a very big fan of most audiobooks he reads.

Between stints, do you actually let the time run by "normally" or do you speed up until it's your stint again? Because I remember the AI doing some weird things back in the day when I sped up things. (But maybe that was a Spa 24-only issue)

After the 66 season I think it would be interesting to skip a few years and run the 70 or 71 season

My god, did they also reach 210 MPH IRL on Mulsanne in a GT40 back in 1966? I'd crap my pants every single time 😂

Real life top speed of the Ford GT40 MkII was 201 mph. Top speed of the Ferrari 330 P3 was 192 mph. So the Power & Glory mod versions are a little faster than reality, but not by much.

Ford won the war but Ferrari won the battle that counted.
“ ‘66 Le Mans proved that the passion of the old man from Maranello and his team of craftsman beat the buckets of corporate money The Duce tossed into the GT-40 and deprived him of the crown jewel.
Bandini would call it the greatest win of his career, immortalized by his two fingers raised up in a “V” for victory salute on the podium. Ferrari drivers in later years would say this was an “up yours” to Goliath factory ford teams.
For the men from Dearborn it was back to the drawing board. They had a constructors title but still needed the Le Mans win.”
All that aside this 1966 storyline has been amazing to follow.

GTR2 might show its age visually, but it always sucks me back in for a few ours because the racing just feels different. Also, even with mods installed this game basically runs smooth on a calculator :)

That was great! I love GTR2 and P&G but it's sad that there isn't a newer sim that can do this type of thing. The ai has trouble passing slower cars. I always hated the Indianapolis section because the ai is so fast and reckless through there. I had a feeling the ai was going to pit with 1 to go. They do weird stuff like that.

and somehow, watching a video on my phone of an old race in an old game produces way more thrilling experiences than playing gt7 on a ps5 on a giant 4k tv with a pro sound sistem.

Epic race and great commenting, totally enjoyed this. Just discovered your channel recently and, well... I might have to buy a wheel set after all! I was hesitant because the news SIM are often just milking you for money and for a newbie it can become expensive before you can enjoy racing.
Are there some on-line racing with GPR or is it all against bots?
    Thanks!
