    I have been searching here and there to find...basically "how to care" begonias. THANK YOU!! My begonias are not bare, over this winter it grew and grew. Now it is spring. Plants itself is huge. I didn't know I suppose to prune before winter. Stems are not woody, very healthy looking. But it just too big. Should I prune? I'm in zone 6. Yes they are in pots. Please help. Thank you!!!

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi! Thanks for watching! You can cut back the stems at any time during spring or early summer when the begonia is in its active growth cycle. The begonia will produce new leaves from the base of the cane.

    Can we use the tips for cuttings on begonias

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yes! Take 4 to 5 inch stem cutting, remove lower leaves , and place in potting soil, burying at least a couple of nodes. Start with moist soil and then add a storage baggie over it to act as a greenhouse. Don't allow soil to dry completely. In a month you should have a rooted cutting that can be transferred to another container.

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Sheri, Unfortunately, tuberous begonia are perennials that will not overwinter outside in Alaska. These plants are native to much warmer climates. Special care and an indoor overwintering site are required to keep these plants from year to year in Alaska. I would encourage you to dig it up and pot it, then bring it indoors for each winter.

    Love your easy instructions. I'm in Zone 9, so no concern for frost or cold. Do I still prune all the way back to 3rd node in Fall even though its flowering and warm?

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Deirdre, It really depends on the type of begonia you have. If grown outdoors year-round in warm climates, tuberous begonias die back annually to store up energy in their tubers while they go through a dormant phase. Rhizomatous and fibrous-rooted begonias don’t die back but they are usually pruned annually to keep them full and blooming properly. In warm climates, begonia plant pruning is usually done in spring. In cool climates, begonias are pruned in fall, mainly so that they can easily fit in an indoor location to safely overwinter. Depending on the type of begonia you have, you may not have to prune it.

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hi Radhikaa, Thanks for watching! Begonias prefer growing in light, rich soil with a good concentration of humus, similar to the makeup of potting soil. So it's no surprise the plants tend to thrive in containers. I would keep in container if possible.

    I live in zone 8-9 and have mature wax (I think) begonias that have been in the ground for a few years. Can I divide and replant the large ones, or is it necessary to propagage from a leaf cutting?

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Dean. Thanks for your question. You can do both! In the spring, remove begonias from the ground and carefully separate the new baby plants from the mother plant. You can replant the mother plant in the soil but the baby plants have a better chance of establishing themselves in small containers. Transplant these babies in the ground when they grow a bit and establish some roots!

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  4 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Hi Angela, Pruning your begonia after transplanting can be done, but it's essential to do so with care to minimize stress on the plant. Transplanting itself can be stressful for plants, so it's generally recommended to wait a bit before pruning to allow the plant to recover and establish itself in its new environment.

    My begonia has yellowing tips. What causes that? I have a wax begonia

    • @EdenMakers
      @EdenMakers  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Missy, Most likely, yellow leaves appearing on your Begonia is caused by overwatering, allowing soil to stay soggy, or letting the plant sit in water. ... Allow the soil to dry about halfway, or 2-4 inches down before watering again. If the soil is kept too wet for too long, the roots may rot.
