    The best Remakes/Sequels/Reboots are the ones that stem from a director/producer etc who has a new, creative idea for a series, maybe they have an idea for how an old series can be updated into the modern day, maybe they have a good idea for how to continue the story of a previous movie, those are usually the best ones... the worst ones are when Hollywood are just looking at a bunch of old movies and decide to greenlight a remake/sequel/reboot for the sole purpose of making money without any artistic integrity.

      I'm with you there. The acting, the direction, the brilliant writing, the sets, the visual effects, the special effects, the cool opening shot that used an actual model city of Egypt that they made just for the film while greenscreening a few people in the opening shot to make it look more alive & the god like craftmanship that is the musical score done by one of my favourite composers and was the main reason why I wanted to make music for my films, Jerry Goldsmith. The Mummy 1999 was a masterpiece, if I were a weirdo and could make love to any film, it'd be that one.

They don’t burden themselves with sequel baiting like the Cruise Mummy did and we know how that went down. All that bait for nothing. Stephen Sommers’ Mummy films are each satisfying as individual films that tell their stories and actually have conclusions. There might be a hint of opening left for further adventures at the end of each, but nothing so huge that they feel incomplete in and of themselves. I wish more films today would remember that.

    6:27 I really don't feel like using Anthony Mackie is a good example. The dude is a Hollywood star who could easily afford the most expensive/largest TV and sound system on the market, a luxury most people don't have. Hell, plenty of celebrities own their own personal theaters.
    Plus going to the movies is an experience. Watching a movie on my own TV while cheaper is boring.

    • @TheUnusualSuspect
      @TheUnusualSuspect  3 ปีที่แล้ว +14

      Yeah, good point. The cinema does make watching a movie an "experience". Almost like you're watching it live. And most people can't afford personal at-home theatres. I just wish that annoying movie goers weren't a thing so I could properly enjoy that sound/visual upgrade. For me, it's worth it to watch a movie on a smaller screen to be guaranteed a hassle-free viewing experience.

    • @thefanwithoutaface8105
      @thefanwithoutaface8105 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@TheUnusualSuspect I understand that but I feel like it basically boils down to what you want more. A more enjoyable movie experience, or less hassle. I frankly don't mind if someone in a theater is slightly obnoxious, I'm usually too interested in the movie to care.
      Godzilla v. Kong for example, I'm not watching that on my TV screen. THat's a movie you HAVE to see on a huge movie screen or it just feels weak. Hell some movies need to be seen on movie screens to be enjoyed. Like Gravity, in theaters it's an amazing cinematic experience that makes you feel like you are trapped in space. But on your TV, it's just a generic sci-fi thriller. It robs the movie of it's excitment.

    • @TheLastWanderingBard
      @TheLastWanderingBard 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Another thing to consider is that Mackie was in the middle of promoting a Disney network show, right after Disney announced their plans to screw over cinemas some more. Of course the guy was going to come out in favor of NOT going to the cinema. He's following a PR script he's been told to. His opinion is not even worth anything because it's not real, regardless of what side he's coming down on.

    You and I have similar opinions, A couple of your points in particular I related to a lot.
    You see my favourite movie of all time is Point Break, "no not the crappy remake" but that's the thing, when the Point Break remake came to cinemas I had to go see it, but I was nervous because I knew I was going to compare it to the original without even trying... which I did.
    Over the years since that movie I've always told people the same thing... I honestly didn't have much of an issue with the Point Break remake, but that's if I didn't compare it to the original, if that remake had no connection to my favourite movie, and was it's own original thing, and just shared the same name, I would have enjoyed it way more, I thought it was a decent action movie.
    The point I'm trying to make is regarding what you said about Adapting a remake, I had the thought when you mentioned Dragonball Evolution, I don't hate the movie... as long as keep in mind that it has no connection to the series I love, but is it's own new thing. That's how I feel about the Point Break remake, the original is still my all time favourite movie, and the newer version is pretty bad as a remake, but as it's own original Point Break adaptation, it's not bad.
    Haha I hope that made sense, cheers to anyone who actually read all this :)

    "A filmmaker can do whatever they want with an adaptation."
    Yeah... I don't know about that... Filmmakers can do whatever they want... with their OWN MOVIE. But adaptations are a bit different. I believe adaptations have certain obligations to uphold. They're not here to "fix" the originals, they're here to show them to us in another medium. Sometimes you gotta make changes, that's true. But it's gotta be changes that MAKE SENSE. And only when they're necessary, not when the filmmaker "feels like it." Unless the change helps the story exist better in the new medium, it's worthless.

    • @resikin
      @resikin 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Like in the Harry Potter films when they added a bunch of new scenes while simultaneously eliminating key plot points from the books. What was with that?

    • @nerdineverythingnerdinnoth4984
      @nerdineverythingnerdinnoth4984 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I think they should be able to go all out with changes, but shouldn‘t try to „fix“ the original. Perhaps make a commentary on it, but always know that some things could be better in the film, while other aspects will be better in the source material. In that way people, who never experienced the original can understand what the story wants to tell, and long time fans can see an interesting, and especially different take that the Filmmaker(s) hold, and appreciate the source material from a whole different angle.

    • @bobby2915
      @bobby2915 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I disagree completely.
      Director CAN do whatever they want with adaptation... since that's the point of ADAPTATION; it's NOT a literal translation!
      For example, Infinity War is an ADAPTATION of the Infinity Gauntlet comic, yet it is NOT strait translation.
      If you want source material on big screen and don't want any change... just read SOURCE MATERIAL.

    For what it's worth, here would be my responses to the points:
    10) Same. I prefer watching movies on my own.
    9) Absolutely not. First of all, Mackie said that comment because Disney told him to big-up the Disney network, given that Disney have just screwed over cinemas like Warner have done and are getting heat for it. Anybody who can't see that Mackie's comments are just PR and marketing for Disney's network is simply naive. These people follow the script they are told to by the people who pay them. What they've done to cinemas is NOT ok. I go to the cinema once every few years, usually it would be for something like a Christopher Nolan movie, and those movies make the cinema worth it alone. I don't care about comic book movies or Star Wars anyway so seeing them at the cinema versus at home means nothing since I won't watch them anyway.
    8) To each their own. I was barely able to keep up with Breaking Bad being on tv once or twice a week. I prefer films. These network subscription services are not doing too well either. Also, that LED screen thing is ultimately going to have the same drawbacks as greenscreening anyway.
    7) I think I could count on my fingers the number of minutes of cumulative Bond I've watched in my entire life.
    6) Sequels and remakes are ok, the problem is that Hollywood has nothing else. They would be ok if they were just a part of the blockbuster content that gets released, rather than the crutch Hollywood leans upon.
    5) Oscars are irrelevant nonsense. This year's will probably have the lowest ratings ever, and not because of what's happened in the last year. They've been on a steady decline for years. Nobody wants to watch rich elitists publicly patting each other on the back anyway. They should just merge every single category into the "here's the people we want to praise most because we do what we want anyway and tough shit to everybody else" category.
    4) See point 5.
    3) Adaptations should be faithful, but being faithful does not mean a scene-for-scene carbon copy. Being faithful means recreating the original point of the source material using different tools.
    2) There's a reason toilet humor has been around so long. Mozart was a fan of fart jokes yet nobody doubts his artistic integrity.
    1) Boss Nass' jowl shake is better.

    I swear we have the same minds.. I’ve been backing Jar Jar since day 1!! I love him!! I agree with literally everything in this video..Bar Number 3: Adaptation. You’re not inherently wrong, changing source material doesn’t make the film bad, or good, but I think it’s totally okay for diehard fans to be disappointed with not staying faithful, as they’re expecting their favourite story’s, effects, moves, characters to be the same on the big screen. It doesn’t make the film bad, but it’s totally fine for fans to not be happy with it, or at least let down. So I completely understand the snobbery. Love you, Suspect! BOO, GET YOUR T*TS OUT!! 😅

    My opinions on your 10 opinions 😁
    10. I’d 100% agree with everything you said in this one.
    9. Despite I did agree on your original video about this topic? Since Covid I been missing cinemas more. I still prefer streaming at home, but I still wanna go to cinema every while and then again.
    8. I can see where you’re coming from, sure a lot of times TV shows > movies. But also, keeping track of so many tv shows is very time consuming. At least with movie, 2 hours and finished.
    7. I don’t think it’s exclusively a James Bond issue, plenty of movies / tv shows haven’t really aged well. Not saying you are wrong, but James Bond hasn’t been banned from viewing etc.
    6. This one I respectfully disagree with you. Nearly all remakes I seen I didn’t like. I feel Sequels are only good, if it continues a storyline plot. The only 2 times I feel a remake is okay? If people didn’t know it was a remake, and if it targets a brand new audience rather than try to please the original fan base.
    5. Okay I won’t lie, seeing that giant list for different genders, ethnicities etc I see your point. But I assume it was done only cause, the awards always kept going to the same Caucasian male group. So, I disagree and would say it should be kept.
    4. .....yup. I never watch them 😂😂😂😂 I don’t get the overhype for people to watch these 😂
    3. I’d say similar to the remake opinion I said earlier. For most part I disagree, but the only time it can sometimes work, if it aims for a completely different audience. I love you mentioned avatar last airbender for this one :)
    2. .... To each their own mate 😅 but I won’t lie, the fart where the Forrest went flat did get a laugh from me lol.
    1. YES.....YES YES YES AND YES 😂 someone who understands me about jar jar :) some have said they love him as a solo character, but not as a Star Wars character. Maybe that’s it

    Your videos always know how bring joy to my day Suspect, with your relatability and sense of humor it always gets me excited for more of your amazing content however long the stretch of time between them may be.
    My Unpopular movie opinion is that I Love Attack of the clones.... I’ll admit I was initially upset at your review of it back in the day, but overtime I’ve grown to be accepting of others views even if I don’t agree with them, plus it was just a fun review to watch cause of your unique style that always gets a laugh out of me.
    Even though I love it I won’t deny that their aren’t difficult scenes to sit through.... specifically the scene with Padme in the black dress with Anakin confessing the torment he’s enduring by being in her presence... very difficult.
    Aside from that though my soft spot for it mostly comes from the way the action is directed, not to mention the plot line involving Obi-Wans investigation was interesting with the cloners, especially when he came across Jango Fett, who is far more Badass then Boba in my opinion. Then there is Yoda using a lightsaber... I never had a problem with it, after all Count Dooku challenged him after the battle with the force was finished, not to mention this was at a time before Yoda realized a jedis strength came from the force used through defense rather than a weapon used only for attack.
    The performances are hit and miss, you get good scenes, but also at the cost of difficult segments. The scene between Anakin and his mother breaks my heart, and it proves under the right circumstances Hayden was an incredible actor for the role. Christopher Lee’s performance as Dooku was my favorite second only too the master schemer Palpatine. Overall I am aware of the movies inherent flaws, but I also cannot deny that their aren’t amazing qualities to come from it whether it be the Soundtrack, sound Design, the action, even the acting at specific points. Not perfect, but not as terrible as fans claim it to be in my opinion.

    Two things I wanna point out.
    While Wandavisions overall budget is higher than films like the first Avengers film, one has to realise that Wandavision has the benefit of being episodic, each episode being released weekly can generate enough clout for each their own to make their money back, with each consecutive episode ending on a Cliffhanger that benefits the episode that comes after. Films with as big of a budget as Avengers wouldn't be able to do as good initially via streaming as a posed to in Cinema because it's all done in one fell swoop and any cliffhanger it has wouldn't be resolved for a year or two, when the sequel comes out. It's also because of it that films via streaming are a bigger victim of pirating and torrenting than an episode of a TV show, a lot of streaming movie are of a low budget for that reason and any big budget streaming films are usually those that are bought from other studios.
    And while a film being a loose adaptation doesn't necessarily mean it's bad, there's such a thing as straying too far. At least with Dragonball Evolution, it is close enough to Dragon Ball that you can recognise that it's an interpretation of the very first arc of the series, albeit with Emporer Pilaf scrapped and King Piccolo being put in his place. As such is a lot more than what can be said for Godzilla 1998, a film that disregards the source material so bad, that it is mocked by people TO THIS DAY even after the MonsterVerse films, and the monster being given a trademark of its own solely to kill it off on screen in Godzilla: Final Wars, in addition to Godzilla 2014 being made with a partial purpose of not being THAT movie.
    As for my Unpopular opinion......
    Batman V Superman > Civil War

    • @t6kr958
      @t6kr958 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I agree, with tv it's less risky. If one episode fails to gain money then at least the budget wasn't that high, and the next episode could do better. For films it's more of a risk cause they only have one chance to sell a lot of tickets to get back their money.
      And it's ironic he used Wanda Vision and Mandalorian as examples to why film and tv can be successful without cinema tickets, even though the main reason to why Mandalorian and Wanda Vision are as successful as they are is because they spawn off of popular/successful film franchises that have sold a lot of movie tickets.
      In an alternate universe where Star Wars and the MCU didn't make much money off of tickets, the tv shows wouldn't have even existed.

    17:24 The amount of people I’ve seen slamming the upcoming Scarface retelling because ‘you should never remake perfection’ is ridiculous. The 1983 Brian De Palma version is a remake in of itself, and not a subtle one- a lot of the core plot points and motifs are carried over. Now the 1983 version is phenomenal, of course, but it’s a lot less original than people think. Which is why I think people should be more open minded about the new one- it’s got some brilliant talent behind it as well; Diego Luna is apparently attached to star, Luca Guadagino is directing, and it’s being written by the bloody Coen Brothers. This is some insane talent, and I don’t think it’s fair to just throw it aside because it’s a remake of something else (that is *also* a remake).

    Great list, man! I think the only times I disagreed is that I’m really not happy with movie theaters closing. I know it’s only temporary, but man I crave for moviegoing experiences, so many memories are made, both good and bad. While it is very convenient to have a movie you’ve been dying to see right in the comfort of your own home, the experience of seeing it for the first time just doesn’t stick with me as much, and it kinda sucks to be honest. Whenever there’s a time a movie I love or want to see is showing at the theater, I will pay full price, and most of the time it’s well worth it.
    As for my unpopular movie opinion, I get more emotional watching animations than live-action. With animation, you’re able to unleash your imagination with literally no limits, you’re able to convey stronger emotion through the drawings, every single frame has at least some sort of emotional intent the animator wants to communicate, the body language, the facial expressions, and the color palettes. Not to say I can’t get emotional in live-action movies/shows, it’s just that it’s often hard for me to figure out what the director is trying to say, and I often need to view it multiple times to finally understand and get those emotional punches. More often, I’m able to get those emotional punches immediately with animated movies. I can look at every single frame of The Lion King or Avatar: The Last Airbender and just be mesmerized by the atmosphere and how much passion the artists and animators put into them, they all look like something out of a beautiful painting you could hang in a museum. Maybe that’s just the artist in me, I appreciate how much hard work is put into animations, and by god they do NOT get enough credit for it. The best animated movies belong in the same tier as the best live-action movies, I’m looking directly at you, Oscar people.

    the trouble with not judging an adaption against it's source material is that the adaption can have a big impact on the way people perceive the original. When filmmakers choose to adapt a book for example, they effectively take control of peoples perspectives of that book away from the author. Take the Lord of the Rings for example; When i read the hobbit it was before the movie came out and i remember how much enjoyment i got out of picturing these amazing people and locations as Tolkien described them. When i read the Lord of the Rings however, I felt unable to pull my mind away from the Peter Jackson-esque vision of Middle earth. While i do love the movies, they irreversibly effected the way i pictured the story. Adaptions take away a creator's vision of the work and give it to someone else, who can choose to protray the story in the way they wish to. Anyway, great video Suspect, producing great content as always!

Some people in the Star Wars community really are just the worst. It's alright to not like a movie, but some people just have to make it so damn personal. I definitely agree with you on watching the movie solo if I wanna be able to pay attention and get sucked into the characters, stories, visuals, etc. Hell, the last movie I went to see in a movie theater during these pandemic times and got a quieter experience from it was Christopher Nolan's "TENET," and I got plenty sucked into it. HELL, in more recent days, I've got some pretty unpopular opinions regarding ZACK SNYDER lol I went on a Zack Snyder binge (300, Watchmen, Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice and EVEN the fabled Zack Snyder's Justice League (the Snyder Cut)), and I ACTUALLY enjoyed all of them, especially the DCEU movies. One of the unpopular things I had to say was you have to view MOS, BVS and JL as part of a SAGA, not an interconnected universe.

I dont really care if you take creative liberties with something but change for no reason is a slippery slope no one wants to see the bottom of. Also it can reveal more about filmmakers true intent then the fans tolerance. If they did owe one thing to the fans then it would be just to give a shit.

    Here's an opinion from me: I prefer Classic Doctor Who (1963-1989, 1996) over Modern Doctor Who (2005-Present)
    Reasons why:
    - The serialized format (similar to what Suspect talks about when comparing TV shows to movies)
    - No soap opera BS (Seriously, I am sick and tired of the various Doctors crying every single time they lose a companion)
    - The acting (Sure, it can be over the top at times, but there can be good emotional moments too)
    - The music (Love the electronic music over the bombastic orchestral score (except for the TV Movie))
    Overall, I don't hate the modern series, but Classic Who just appeals to me more.

  • @CrashJakFan1994
    @CrashJakFan1994 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    This is a great video. You backed up your arguments well enough to the point of me saying "Yeah, you got a point." I want to add to some things you said, though:
    9. As an on-and-off movie theater employee due to the pandemic, it's horrible to lose a job. You may not like movie theaters, but there are people who are working there to make ends meet.
    6. There are definitely sequels that are welcome if they're done well, but remakes are a huge gamble. Even then, so are original ideas.
    4. In addition to what you said, part of why I stopped caring about awards shows is because of how badly they treat the medium of animation. Best Animated Feature is nothing but a ghetto category. To date, only three have been nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars, and that's most likely due to Disney pulling off good campaigns. There were several others that could have been great contenders, but either the Oscars don't care or the studios don't have enough faith to campaign for them. As you said, though, awards shows don't matter. The real winners are determined over time. For example, Citizen Kane, the so-called "greatest movie of all time," never won Best Picture.
    2. There are definitely some fart jokes that I find funny like in Blazing Saddles, Shrek 2, and The BFG (2016) to name a few. It's all in the execution. And yes, I can't get enough of that fart joke you made in the Home Alone 2 review. That cracks me up.
    1. I rewatched the Star Wars films in preparation for The Rise of Skywalker and started with The Phantom Menace. I didn't find Jar Jar funny, but I wasn't annoyed by him. I guess that's because I don't take things out of proportion. When I heard about Ahmed Best, I sympathized with him. Just because you don't like a character doesn't mean you take your anger out on the actor. They're just doing their job. It gets worse when history repeats itself when vocal fans harassed Kelly Marie Tran just because they didn't like Rose. It's awful, to say the least.

    Diversity for diversity sake isn’t a good thing in film and tv shows.
    Ben Affleck is my favorite Batman.

    Jar Jar Binks fits the mythological archetype of the fool - the character that’s intelligent but doesn’t normally resort to common sense. Yeah, Jar Jar is a bumbling buffoon, but had it not been for his mentioning that the Gungans are a warrior society, the Naboo never would’ve had the backup they needed to battle the Trade Federation.

    Never thought about the best actor/best actress category in that way before, it makes total sense especially since now all performers regardless of gender are called "actors."
