RAF and Nato allies play out an Article 5 scenario on major exercise

  • Never before have so many countries' planes left home bases for one Nato exercise, one of the biggest for decades.
As fighting continues in Ukraine, the German-led multinational air exercise, Air Defender 23 - which features four RAF Typhoons - has been playing out a Nato Article 5 scenario.
Under Article 5 "the parties agree that an armed attack against one or more of them in Europe or North America shall be considered an attack against them all".

"The German airspace is a little bit smaller and a little bit more congested" is the most diplomatic understatement I've heard in such contexts, ever. Germany is half the size of Texas with a population of about 82 mio folks, decentralized as hell and though we were used to this in up to the end of the Warsaw Pact, deconfliction would be a nightmare if not for the professionalism of military crews.

i think she meant the airspace the military is allowed to use, wich is rather smaller and definetily congested.

@@sqnder5565 Both are, usually, but the scope of this one does block three zones which are very adequate for such an exercise. Well, it's not Alaska, but the deployment to Germany per se is already part of the challenge.

If I'm not mistaken, the RAF is also participating in the Arctic Challenge 23 exercise in a leading role which would explain why only four Typhoons are seconded to Air Defender 23. And don't forget the ongoing Air Policing Mission in the Baltics where the RAF is a major contributor alongside the German Luftwaffe.

That choice must have been tough. I would suggest to offload last gen aircraft earlier with a useful lifespan of 10 - 15 years to poorer NATO allies. They have lower personnel costs, but interoperatbility remains high, the punch is real, but if you consider Romania and Croatia phasing out their MiG-21s now (!), Poland still operating 12 SU-22, well at least they still slowly all got rid of their Su-25 and MiG-29 recently.
