This is what it looks like when there's a lack of standard in an organization. Having a standard means something as simple as communication protocol for VAR is taken care of.
A lack of standard in any organizations or area of life allows incompetence to take charge. And then when you match that with PGMOL's arrogance and refusal to be held accountable/transparent you get disasterclassess in officiating like we've been having since the start of this season.

What is scary about this whole thing is that the referees didn't even realize they had made a mistake.... It was the replay editor who spotted it for them... and then had to protest over and over before they finally realized they had made a mistake. The assistant VAR was actually saying "HE PLAYED HIM OFFSIDE" so he thought the offside call was right despite the lines being drawn showing he was clearly onside. So the assistant VAR was clueless right up until the end.

I'm not convinced the conspiracy goes away- firstly this audio actually indicates differently to what PGMOL officials said about what happened before the release(check the BBC transcripts). It seems to me that the VAR Darren England saw the lines, and said 'check complete, off'. Why does he say 'off'? It's certainly not a Comms sign off I heard of (eg over/out). Secondly the replay operator did say the on field decision was offside and then says 'are you happy with this?' VAR replies 'yeah'. After the replay operator asks if he's sure the VAR assistant says 'yeah, offside, goal. That's not right Daz'. If these VAR officials were so distracted by the replay video that they did not pay attention to the live pitch, then how are they still calling the footage offside? Something seems very off here, and I'm sure this warrants further investigation into the individuals...

Gab Marcotti, on ESPN mentioned that during the 2006 World Cup final, the on field official went against protocol and stopped the game when he saw Marco Materazzi rolling around in the penalty area. The game had been played for several minutes. We all know what the outcome was, Zinedine Zidane was sent off for a head-butt. The integrity of the game should always be paramount. The rules can be broken, the French officials didn’t complain because they knew the correct decision was made.

People don't know anything about the problem and why a replay match must be held, so I'll explain why. It's not about judgement of red card, handball or something like that, in which referee's judgement is involved and can be controversial, but by referee's call, it's decided. In this VAR case, VAR referee, who was in charge of the judgement of onside or offside, called it was onside, which means a goal, but the goal was disallowed. You know, when it comes to red card or handball, the on-field referee sometimes checks the video himself, which is the on-field check, but when it comes to onside or offside, the on field referee doesn't check it. Why not? Onside or offside is just a technical issue without human judgement involved. Just draw a line and you see. If it's onside, onside. If it's offside, offside. No human judgement involved at all like the goal line system. You guys know about the goal line system, right? It alarms the referee that it's a goal when the ball crosses the goal line. It's the totally same situation as when the goal line system calls that it's a goal but the referee disallows the goal. Can you accept it?

Theres a really simple solution. Put a button on the Linesmans flag that sends a radio message to the VAR saying its offside. This way VAR can start checking it before a goal is even scored, the linesman also then doesnt even need to flag, though should still the second a goal is scored. It also gives a clear indication of what the onfield decision was. Light comes on, beep, what ever, its an onfield offside call. No light or beep, on field decision is on side. Double down on this an make sure everyone is clearly indication what they are looking at. Check Complete isnt good enough. Check Complete its Onside, and none of this happens

The real point of failure in this incident is the communication process, which isn't fit for purpose and has to be changed. Instead of saying check complete, they should state explicitly what the conclusion of the check is. Check complete, the player's onside, the goal stands.
That would have prevented this horrendous error from happening,. It wouldn't matter that the VAR officials didn't realise what the on-field decision was, or if the assistant ref shouldn't have flagged for offside. The VAR check concluded that the goal should stand and if that was communicated clearly to the ref, there would have been no issue.

Absolutely correct. They’re not getting it. It’s a simple case of communication as you say.

How simple and easy would it be for the protocol to be that VAR operator ends with confirming their decision eg Confirmed Onside, Confirmed Handball, Confirmed whatever.... then this mix up can't happen.

Instead of the jargon they are no doubt forced to use. If they were allowed to talk to each other like normal people the VAR could just say “it’s onside. Give the goal”

Stop saying the audio shows they thought in field decision was onside. VAR thought it was offside because they didn’t see Romero.

On the day a huge sign came up in the big screen saying:
    Checking Disallowed Goal
    Offside
    VAR
So VAR knew that the on field decision was offside.

The worse part is everyone is missing the fact that when they say check complete you hear the ref say off and blows his whistle how on earth does VAR miss the ref say off? Then what happens after is a mess

Darren England said “just checking THE offside, delay delay” not “checking FOR offside”. He knew the on-field decision was offside - end of.

With hawkeye and semi-automatic offside technology they still need to make sure that the VAR team can overrule it if they see it is wrong. As they point out semi-automatic offside technology would still rely on the VAR team telling the ref the right thing. To avoid this the VAR team need to clearly tell the ref what they have concluded "Check Complete - Player ONSIDE award goal" the ref should then have to repeat that back to VAR team. It is stupid that in this case the officials are not able to stop the game and correct the mistake. Instead you have Darren England operating VAR for rest of game in knowledge that he could be out of job after the final whistle.

Only Ref who game out well here is Michael Oliver who was 4th official and was paying more attention than the rest and would have made the right call if he was the guy in charge

A simple solution is for the VAR to specify a standard statement after each decision/review. e.g The VAR had decided opposition have scored a goal
