In Pakistan, the rate of consanguinity, which refers to marriages between close relatives, is notably high. According to a study titled “Identifying Genes Responsible for Intellectual Disability in Consanguineous Families”, the rate of consanguinity is over 60%. It further added that 17% to 38% of the consanguineous marriages in Pakistan are between first cousins.
This high rate of inbreeding has led to an unusually high number of genetic mutations spreading in Pakistan, leading to disabilities in children of consanguineous marriages. Genetic disorders such as hydrocephalus, neural tube defects, and congenital heart defects are more common due to the rates of inbreeding in these countries.
