    Daily Reminders (12) summary:
    1. The pain is from TMS and not from any structural abnormalities
    2. The direct reason for the pain is mild oxygen deprivation
    3. TMS is a harmless condition caused by my repressed emotions
    4. The principle of motion is my repressed anger
    5. TMS only exists to distract my attention from the emotions
    6. Since my back or other body part is basically normal, there is nothing to fear
    7. Therefore physical activity is not dangerous
    8. And I must resume all normal physical activity
    9. I will not be concerned or intimidated by the pain or symptoms
    10. I will shift my attention from the pain or symptoms to the emotions
    11. I intend to be in control, not my subconcious mind
    12. I must think psychological at all times, not physical

      @@selmo6376I find it very helpful to remind myself that many people are walking around, fully active in life, whom have Stenosis, Herniated Disc, or whom are completely unaware that they have a “diagnosis.” We suffer because we have a psychological need to validate our emotional pain. Ask why we felt so good to receive what we considered a “legitimate diagnosis.” We give the blame to our body instead of processing the emotion that warns us that we have legitimized the shame/blame cycle of pain. Being dis-abled re-lie-ves us from needing to meet expectations that overwhelm us.

    I have been through a lot of this in my last 20 years with TMS. One thing I can add is that feeling your anger/emotions is not the same thing as thinking about them or analyzing them or mentally blaming others, etc. I went a long time trying to shift my attention to my repressed emotions, but all I was doing is more thinking. That made my nervous system more tense. Feeling your anger/grief/etc. is different than thinking about them. Even yelling out loud while mentally blaming your parents or others who have wronged you is likely not going to help, but just keep you in a tense angry hate-filled state. I even did psychodynamic therapy to try to uncover the repressed emotions, and it didn't work, because it was just making me angrier. I never actually felt my repressed emotions, I just thought about them more, and developed more mental anger. My mind was likely guessing at why I have rage deep inside, rather than actually feeling the rage. You don't need to know why you have rage inside. You just need to tend to the rage. Feel it. Be with it. But don't analyze it. It might not make any sense why you have rage. Don't worry about that. Just be with the rage like you are holding an angry baby that you are comforting. The real you is bigger than the rage or guilt or grief. It can handle it. Your mind cannot solve your mind. There is something greater in you than your mind. Be that.

      @othervideos4002 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +14

      @@scrumptiousjdp I am sure there are some videos here on this page that address this issue in more detail. But I can say that for me, just sitting still and meditating for half an hour causes deep seeded emotions to surface after about 15 minutes or so. I can witness anger and rage arise without thinking about the anger or rage during meditation. I even sometimes yell out loud without knowing why. A book called the Presence Process also deals with the issue of repressed trapped emotions. I have heard that EFT/tapping helps as well, but I haven't really tried that. This is not an easy thing to deal with, as the mind seems to have automatic defenses in place to stop you from feeling your emotions. But I am pretty sure that more thinking or talking about your trauma/rage/emotional pain is not going to release it or integrate it. It just keeps it alive.

    Best way to get to the root of any pain or discomfort in the body is, while you're experiencing pain, ask yourself "How does this make me feel?", put an emotional word on it. Once you come up with the emotion, anger, frustration, etc. realize that emotion was there long before the pain showed up. That emotion had to get loud enough to get your attention. Pain is just an "Indicator" of how you've been feeling.

    I was thinking about quitting my golf league because of the pain. Then i saw this video. I put the 12 daily reminders on my phone. I forced myself to play golf, all the while reading the 12 over and over in between holes. It did hurt while playing but I didn't let it intimidate me. I kept thinking maybe id stop if the pain got worse, but i kept parring holes. I ended up having my best round in years, 76. All because I saw this video, thanks so much!!

    Thank you. John Sarno never had the credit he deserved. He had the guts to stand by his theory. As a health care professional I can clearly state without fear of contradiction that modern medicine is a million miles away from reality. We can do so much with our minds. I just wish as Dr Gabor said that modern medicine should not be saying "what wrong is with you". They should say "what happened to you". I wish you all well peeps on your journey. Namaste.

    Dan, you helped me feel better tonight, as I realized I was freaking out about my pain and not focused on my emotions. I like asking myself, "How are you feeling right now?" That really helps to identify what is going on. Sometimes I think I know how I feel, but my pain doesn't let up. But when I answered, "Anger," and allowed myself to feel that anger physically, my pain started to subside. Also, trying to stay patient with the process and not get down on myself if the pain isn't MAGICALLY IMMEDIATELY eliminated. Thank you!

    I believe this. I'm a very angry person but I hide it. I'm angry with my parents and family. Such a horrible childhood. I'm also angry with how humans treat this planet and all the other animals who live here. I eat a healthy diet and get plenty of sleep but STILL have back pain. I notice when I stop focusing on it and get out and do things that make me happy the pain subsides.

    Dr. Sarno's "Healing Back Pain" helped cure my lower back, glutes and hamstring pain many years ago. I was an active person going through some challenging personal problems at that time. A rheumatologist recommended the book to me. I gave my original copy to my daughter's friend's dad and he was able to cancel his scheduled back surgery after reading it. TMS is real!

    Thank you, Dan. I have listened to this two consecutive nights before sleeping. This has helped remind me about putting my mind in check and seeing what I am angry about. I recently had a terrible flare-up after being pain-free for eight months or so.
    I have had two epidurals two weeks apart. I have been feeling like I am having a stroke of some sort. I have chest pain that radiator down my arm and back. The tremendous amount of stress I have been feeling with work, finances, and my personal life threw me into this catastrophic episode of TMS.
    It feels like my body has turned on me entirely. I need to acknowledge that I am angry and scared and need to let it out. I need to remind myself that my body is not "diseased."
    I am going to listen to this till it becomes embedded into my subconscious. Thank you and Dr. Sarnos for this.

      I’m brand new to this as of this morning. I went on a 1.8 mile walk while reminding myself that “I am fine“. Every once in a while, I could feel my body tighten up and the pain begin to express itself, then I would roll out the “I am fine“ phrase and it would immediately go away. If that isn’t convincing I don’t know what is! I could go on about what I have been diagnosed with which is about three or four or five things, but for me, I see a way out with this TMS! I wish you the best of luck.

    Reading 'The Divided Mind' was wild for me. As Sarno listed different phantom symptoms, I kept thinking, "yeah I have that, that, that, that, and that." Ha! For me it feels like suppressed anxiety more than suppressed anger. As I deny the physical symptoms, the anxiety comes back, and I am forced to search and figure out why I am anxious. Usually it's as simple as keeping myself busy, and introducing myself into social scenarios in order to genuinely feel better. The book, "the meaning of anxiety" by Rollo May is a great read if anyone has psychosomatic issues related to anxiety.

    Great video. I’ve been reading those reminders daily and I’ve found they help me stay focused on the psychology of TMS. I actually consulted with Dr. Sarno in NYC about 18 years ago. To make a long story short, it wasn’t until recently that I finally and completely have accepted his TMS diagnosis on me. The pain has kept me distracted all these years. But I started the recovery process again and I’ve found your videos extremely helpful. I really like how you say in one of your other videos “as long as we keep our minds focused on the pain and not on our emotional issues, the brain (syndrome) wins. It has us fooled. “ Thank you for posting your videos and helping so many people like myself. God speed.

    I'm puzzled - I don't repress my anger, was taught to process and express it young. A good therapist told me anger repressed becomes depression, and to write them out and express them calmly. Bless him! So I rarely repressed anger. I have repressed grief, however, in the past, and realized that I repressed fear unconsciously - so it's more than just repressed anger. But a ton of inescapable stress led to chronic fatigue syndrome and later fibromyalgia. I rid myself of most of both for 6 years - but another ton of stress led to a relapse. This is all very helpful - it takes away the worst fear of pain. So I still dance and take long walks, - just not as hard or long as I've done in the past.

      No worries for asking. It is my pleasure to help you. This is what has helped me is to reduce stress and anxiety. I had to control the anxiety which was brought on by the dizziness. I control it by meditating, breathing exercises, positive affirmations. Don't focus on the dizziness. The more you focus on the dizziness the more the symptoms will be there, it's a viscous cycle. I know it's hard not to focus on it but work on trying not to. I have good and bad days. On the good days I treasure and the bad I try to be as positive as I can . I do vestibular exercises to re train the brain and desensitize it. I take Paxil 12mg and Valium 1/2 mg every day. Hang in there you will heal. You will get through this. I hope this helps you.

I stopped suggesting Dr. Sarno to my friends and acquaintances because they actually became angry when I mentioned that the cause of their pain might be psychological and emotional. Thanks for the video. Its a great way to remind myself of Dr Sarno. 8 years ago I accidentally came across his book on Amazon and decided to give it a try. I was suffering from back pain for 5 years before that. I had tried everything up to that point. The first Dr I saw did an MRI and found some bulging disc. He put enough fear in me that it took several reading for Dr Sarno before I could get rid of my conditioning. Today I play tennis regularly. I do get pain occasionally but need to remind myself of Sarno or reread his book. But watching your video was a quick way to remind me of the basic principles and feel better immediately. Thanks again for the video. We need folks like you spread the word of Dr Sarno. Thanks again!

    After hearing and acting on telling my pain to go away, and reassuring the bodymind that I am ready to experience my emotions fully, chronic and severe lower back hip pain that has been present for 6 months ( prior to that it was 6 months of shoulder pain). So nearly 2 years of changing diagnoses in all forms of degenerative auto-immune diseases and prescriptions of steroids and immunosuppressant drugs. And then a diagnosis of Ross River Virus early this year ( which my Rheumatologist totally ignores in favour of giving me something far more serious) . But 24 hours of telling my body that we are going to be all ok has had miraculous effect. Dr. Sarno was correct. Stress reduces blood flow to the brain, stress reduces oxygen in the body. We breathe less and hold our breath when in “fight or flight”. This is why taking deep breaths it calming. Of course he was correct about oxygen deprivation. Whether it is the cause or the effect of central nervous system stimulation, I guess that is the question? Great video.

    • @PainFreeYou
      @PainFreeYou  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not saying Sarno is incorrect, but the oxygen deprivation was a theory that the current TMS medical doctors are not speaking or writing about these days. Why? I'm not sure anyone has been able to confirm that the oxygen deprivation was the mechanism to create the pain. In the end, the physiologic mechanism doesn't really matter. The pain is turned on by the brain when the brain perceives danger. I talk about this concept more in this video: th-cam.com/video/tnU6KBAv5fg/w-d-xo.html

No wonder Dad spent so much time in bed on his back! And I did a littke Qiqong after two hip replacements to get back on the horse and have had acute low back pain, for about 8 months. And did everything physically possible to alleviate, just spinning and spinning, yet just listening to this good guy I just came upon iterating these 12 guidelines , I felt some release and a sense of wonder and an AHA moment that being sn outdoors woman all my life that There is Nothing wrong physically, let’s get down to the nitty gritty of the rage, since childhood but also being a child of the ‘60’s, that’s a damn big one right there…and I’m finally able to acknowledge my astoundingly well hidden anger, take it out and examine it until I can smile to it. well living alone now 25 years I think I am able to dialogue with myself, using Dr. Sarno’s tools. Had back spasms this morning after ages without and decided to look at this video again. A refresher. Realized I’d had a job interview last week with Apple for a job I didn’t want and had a frustrating all-day session in the garage installing a door striker in my classic BMW Z3 - an emotionally charged object no doubt. Anima object = mother? In other words, all week I’d been getting mad 😡 as hell, in particular during the striker installation when the backing plate fell inside the wheel well! Hi. This is great. I’ve been working on suppressed emotions for nearly 5 years now with a therapist. It’s more than suppressed emotions because really if we could access all emotions in the moment we’d be enlightened. I’ve come to believe through experience the body and mind to some extent will suppress emotions regardless at how well we access our emotions. Yes suppressed emotions contribute to health and in my case I truly believe the past decade health issues are from my mind and body signaling danger. This is something I actually came into life experiencing and is a conditioned way of living unfortunately. Nonetheless I see and experience this more and am working out how to navigate decades of my psych being conditioned to perceiving and anticipating threat. I wish more people knew this. I do believe this is a key contributor if not the driver in persistent and chronic health issues. People need tools to recondition and orient to safety. Your sharing is amazing as parts of this do apply in the context of disengaging the threat response. Thank you

    I find it very interesting that blood o2 levels are mentioned. My daughter went through some medical issues that required us to check her o2 levels often. I suffer from weird dizziness and other symptoms so I began to check my o2 levels whenever I had s bought of symtpoms. More often than not my o2 levels were sporadically low at the onset and magically raised themselves back to normal levels after a few seconds.

    I do believe my pain does have have a connection to stress and emotions. I think it’s the only cause. I have spent a decade trying to work through it without success. So I believe what your saying, but I haven’t experienced any success. It makes it feel hopeless and I don’t know how to get out of it.

    This was a good overview. I tuned in late to your videos and tried to understand by only hearing a few. I see the bigger picture now. This was really helpful. I know I am safe..that these are just pain sensations and nothing is really wrong. And emotionally..I am Forgiving the Past..Present and not worrying about the future. Forgiving myself too..not just others. I journal positive things and gratitude and I do meditation and have a little prayer ready for when my mind is unruly. I do my activities through any pain..knowing it is only sensations. My End Goal is Peace because I know that is the most Healthy state for MySelf to be in..both spiritually and physically. Thank You..Dan. This really helped me see a more complete picture. I think I got it pretty good Now. Thank You!

      Pain Free You
      I discovered Something this morning! I suffered from anxiety disorder and panic attacks for 30 years..with just as much trouble as the Pain. It is the very same principle! Once I started having the panic attacks..they repeated because of my Fear of them. This is more genius than you know! Our brain becomes programmed. If this isn’t the Work of the Devil..I can’t think of a better description. This ruined 30 years of my life and Nothing was wrong with me!

      Pain Free You
      I think this is where the anger comes in. The fear comes First..brings you more pain..ruins your life..and then you become Angry! This is so genius. I have another story. One morning I fainted..fell on the concrete floor and made mush out of the back of my head. I went to the doctor..did the cat scan. Nothing wrong! So somewhere I determined it was low blood sugar caused this! The fear Set In! I carried food with me for years after that..because I feared the low blood sugar that I decided I had. I would get all the symptoms of low blood sugar..but when it is actually tested it is Not low! Dr. Sarno had no idea the Genius he Really was! And I heard him say..the established medical people totally ignored him! You are doing GOOD Work! This is True..a true principle..for more than just pain..I believe.

      The happening happens..(usually fear based). The Fear Comes..The Fear sets in. The brain is then programmed by the fear. Then the anger comes..because the fear is ruining your life. Then the Fear and Anger KEEPS you There! Stuck in the Program.

    I have numerous clients (I do organic hair services and it draws a lot of people who have autoimmune issues and a strong pain body) who have many different treatments for years that do nothing. They (as well as myself) have chased “cures” for years. Nothing gets them better, from diet changes, food elimination diets, chiropractic, functional medicine, naturopathic doctors etc. I’ve felt for some time now that these were not answers for me. I’ve told my therapist as well as medical docs I believe my symptoms are due to early childhood trauma. They look at me like I’ve got 3 heads. But I know this is true and I’m schtickin’ to it.
    Taking care of the animal (body) is very important for sure but it’s not the total answer. I’ve been a health advocate for years now and I still got worse. I would argue that conditions especially like fibromyalgia are pain body, trauma induced. The only way thru is out folks.

    This is bang on. I've noticed my awareness lately has been focused on how an activity is going to cause pain so I shy away from it. I pace take breaks etc but am moving forward cautiously and shifting my thoughts away from the fear of feeling worse to assuring myself I will be fine and take my time. It's so nice to hear you speak about these methods. Emotions are the key to gaining knowledge about our physical health or ill health.

      @@PainFreeYou I read his book back in February after a bad relapse and it worked like magic, I could bend down and touch my toes no problem but I got too confident and went and did a heavy deadlift in the gym; immediately my doubt began to creep in again and I was in bad shape for a while and as a result my belief in the method ceased to exist, but I realized I didn't follow his warning of taking it easy for the first couple weeks. I am now a firm believer that TMS is a mental issue and there is nothing wrong with my body, I pray my healing process goes as smoothly as yours. I really appreciate your other videos on understanding and listening to our emotions as well. You're doing great work my friend.

    Confirming to my brain that I CAN go to a 2 hour yoga class every week, and do all the poses, helped me recover from severe RSI in my hands, and reminding myself that it’s distraction pain.

    Hi Dan! I just discovered your videos yesterday and WOW, what a gift! Thank you SO much for sharing all your knowledge and experience with TMS! I'm so glad you are free of your pains! I first learned of Dr. Sarno many years ago on the Howard Stern radio show when he mentioned how Dr. Sarno helped him with his back issues. I did attempt to apply his teachings but never achieved my goal however I still did believe in it. I've had back pain for at least 22 years now (along with digestive issues, bursitis, tendonitis, neck/shoulder pain, etc. lol) and have tried many different therapies throughout all those years to get rid of them. Currently, my acupuncturist mentioned Dr. Sarno as he also eradicated his back pain with the methods. That brings me to yesterday when I discovered your videos. I have 2 of Dr. Sarno's books and will be reading them again. I'm wondering if you or any others might be able to guide me on my circumstance. I care for my elderly mother who lives with me and have been doing so for a very long time. There is constant stress, to say the least. I have always been aware of and expressed my emotions - anger, resentment, rage, unfairness, you know, the usual, lol and the list goes on. So I don't necessarily fall into the category of repressed emotions as they are always front and center. So 2 questions - #1 - how does one apply the techniques when each and every day heavy stressors are around you and the emotions aren't repressed and #2 - when there are multiple physical ailments, what is the best approach? Thank you so much for the ways in which you are helping many people!!!

    • @PainFreeYou
      @PainFreeYou  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A big thing to grasp in the restart of your TMS journey is that many of the "physical" ailments may actually just be normal abnormalities and NOT the cause of the pain. Take the pain test for each of your symptoms to find out for sure. A score of 29 is TMS and can be eliminated completely. YourPainTest.com
      You don't need to live a stress free life to eliminate TMS. If that were true, nobody would get better. Many people don't believe they have repressed emotions. But since that happens outside of our awareness, who really knows. Regardless, if you have pain for 22 years, it may have nothing to do with the emotional state that was going on when the pain started. The brain can literally "learn" to keep pain persistent. That being said, we can unlearn the pain as well. These are my main suggestions. Implement these and you should be able to get well. th-cam.com/video/3vJgBnrhFt8/w-d-xo.html

    I am learning to help my son with TMS. His pattern is to start expressing his anger, which I allow and listen to, but then he gets frustrated and just takes an Ativan to calm down.

    This theory explains why for so many people antidepressants help to quell the pain symptoms. If they are stress related....there ya go! In my opinion it's another indicator that its' TMS.

    New to your channel, but this is a great video. Thinking about golf, it’s clear that golf professionals seem to suffer back problems much more than other professional sports. While people may attribute this to the bent over posture in golf which is a natural, maybe it is more due to the solitary and extremely stressful and anger inducing elements of golf. People have to hold in their emotions while they’re playing or they will play even worse. And typically the emotion they’re holding in is anger/frustration.
