Yeah, that's a mistake on the supply list, Lee. Thanks for catching it. Should def be the gloss and heavy is ok. The matte sinks into the fabric and won't hold the leafing. The gloss stays on the surface.
thank you for this really informative demo - wondering - can the printed fabric (gold leaf with Gel medium) get wet and still retain the gold? I don't mean heavy washing - say if a person was wearing this and was walking in the rain? thank you.
Love your video. I actually want to do gold leafing on organza silk dress. I was curious if the glue would go through that material? Also if i used real gold leaf would i be able to wash it as dry clean or hand wash as well? And lastly since the dress i wanted to make was korean inspired i was wondering instead of the screen you used. Their method was using a wooden stamp with the glue and stamping it on the fabric. Would i still be able to use your method, but as a stamp? I feel it would allow me to put the design right next to the first stamp, so it would look like one seamless design.
Ok. It doesn't work that well with a stamp because you can't get as much glue on the fabric evenly as you would get screening or with a stencil. Organza is challenging because the glue goes through the fabric so the image probably won't be solid. The weave breaks it up. And you might be able to hand wash, but this really isn't a great technique for clothing that has to be cleaned. I wouldn't recommend it.

I have probably a silly question. Is there any water in the iron or is this more just a heat transfer? I'm clothbinding my old beat up edition of Watership Down and want to decorate the cover with leaf, but don't want to end up ruining it (more) in the process. Thanks :)
Since you cover the leaf with parchment when you iron over it, the steam can't penetrate the parchment. That means it really is the heat and not the steam that's doing the work. The heats softens the gloss medium so the leafing sticks to it. Make sure you use gloss medium!! That's where most people screw up.

so is the thermofax only used as a screen printing device? does it affect the application of adhesive / gold leaf at all? I am asking cause I have never hear of thermofax before
If you watch my video on how the Thermofax works, it will give you an in depth understanding, but essentially it was originally used to make the stencil that was used to print mimeographs. When that was replaced by copiers and then printers, the mimeograph machine became obsolete and was then re-purposed to create the screens used for Thermofax printing.
this is so cool. i'm trying to learn how to print my art with holographic foil and ended up on the scrapbooking and card section and then over here and you seem like the coolest art teacher ever. i'm wondering, as someone who knows nothing about screen printing and hopes you have something on your page (i'm wondering how you make the stencil, for one), usually it's done with a paint or dye that would be able to be washed. but this is glue and leaf. you said it can be dry cleaned, but can it be run through normal washers and dryers? i'm excited to explore your channel. i'm really poor right now (2020 you get it) but itching to do a hands-on art project.
Hi Jane, thank you very much for your videos! You mentioned dry cleaning/not dry cleaning gold leaf fabric, that brings to mind best cleaning for wearable art. Is there a best/better way to clean your art fabric for wearable's?

Wearable art is tricky...I'm not a huge fan of dry cleaning, but that's one choice that's driven by how a garment was made, so you'd best pay attention to the advice on the hangtag. Some garments I have and wear only infrequently, are ok with spot cleaning. And if you own anything with metallic FOIL on it (as opposed to leaf) NEVER dry clean or iron it, as both will strip the metallic finish off.
I ha be a question. I am applying gold leaf on cotton or linen fabric and someone told me that I need to apply GESSO first. Should I apply directly on the cotton canvas gel matte medium like you do or I should apply gesso and then matte medium like you are doing ? i really need help since mona lisa adhesive doesn’t work on my cotton canvas ...😔
It depends on whether you want the canvas to continue to be flexible or not. Gesso will stiffen A LOT! If that's not what you are after, I would stick with gel medium because it's flexible when it dries. AND NOTE on the fabric you are describing, MATTE won't work. It needs to be gloss gel medium. I never use matte for leaf applications, I always use gloss. Hope this helps.
NO Wax paper is coated with wax! That's why the gold leaf sticks to it. Might be a pretty effect but not what you're after. Parchment paper is designed to "release" and NOT stick to anything which is why it is the right paper for use with the leaf.

Lint rollers work pretty well to pick up stay pieces of leaf...and the peel-off from those go right into my collage papers stash!

The glue doesn't penetrate the silk, so there is no issue with sticking.

Yes. It can be gently washed and walking in the rain would definitely be ok!

No, that has never happened to anything I've made and I have been using it for 20 + years.

Metallic leaf can be used with gel medium on most fabrics!

It depends on whether you want the canvas to continue to be flexible or not. Gesso will stiffen A LOT! Is wax paper the same a parchment? Every time i iron over the dried glue the gold leaf stick to the wax paper ? Do you know how to fix this problem?

Over a very long period of time it could. But I have never had trouble with it tarnishing.
