we called them lucky tabs. when you got lucky you would give the tab to your partner of the night, they could then put it on a necklace or bracelet or simply just collect them.

I collect them cos they can make cool chains ;w; I have a jewelry box full of them they are useful for makeing accessories like trouser chains and chokers and the also make cool earing tbh-

I had a rlly cool idea to make tab chain bracelets and paint them into my flags (trans, gay and asexual) to go with my alt outfits
Also, people collect them for goods. There are people who make jewelry, purses, even clothing out of them. That is where the money market is. They will pay more than a recycle center when purchasing tabs for making goods.
I was shocked today to find out people will buy these en masse on eBay.
I always collect these ,and I still do collect them just because I wanted to ,but I didn’t know that I could actually ship them in and get some cash from them so this is quite useful thanks for the exclamation!!

I've used these for a few emergencies myself! They make good fish hooks, If your zipper breaks or your bra strap.. You'll be glad you have these! I've used them to hang photo frames. 😎
Pull tabs lasted into the 80's, at least in Texas. We didn't get stay tabs until the 80's. All beer and soda had pull tabs.
The tabs aren't lined with plastic. In recent years, all soda cans are inner lined with plastic & this makes the tab itself a "higher grade" & easier to recycle

I have a crap ton of them, if I like someone I will give it to them, more as a friendship thing but it’s a way I tell people I trust them. I wear them myself as well :)
these are urban legends, people assume they're for cancer, but the hospital doesn't recycle. it's because you can't do anything about cancer so this project to collect is just busy work to give people, mostly children, hope; it's like praying but more proactive in the sense you feel like you're doing something
People still collect them 4 years later. :) Reasons may be somewhat different but it still happens. Mostly craft uses and some tabs are colored now. Bubly water has tabs in several different colors with words on them. Recycling prices have improved too. About every couple months I bring my cans in for a per pound price and walk away with at least $70 in cash. That is minus the tabs as I sell those to crafters. :) - Heidi

either it would make an engineering flaw or it might actually be more expensive to do, there’s a suprising amount of engineering that went to the functional design of soda cans to get the shape they have now.

My daughter started collecting the tabs as a hobby and it looked fun, so I got into it, so now our aluminum tab collection has grown to a few hundred tabs in the very short time we've been collecting!

i dont know what made me start collecting them but i did and i went to a recycling center and they had a huge bin full of cans and i wanted to go though all of the cans and take their tabs. I didnt though

let me educate you about recycling cans. a tab is 0.25grams while the whole can is 12.5 grams. this means you need 4000 tabs to get 1 kilo as against only 80 whole cans to get the same weight. so that means if you had 4000 cans to get enough tabs from to make one kilo you could have produced 50 kilos of aluminum from the whole cans? i think i'd prefer to get money from 50 kilos than one kilo i somehow doubt the supposed difference in the types of aluminium would make a difference for recyclers. they are not going to be separating them before melting. it will all go in the same smelter.
I collect pop tabs because one day I said, “I should keep them. I could use them for a craft one day.” …….I never crafted with them. I now have over 100 maybe 200 and it’s only been a few months. Our family drinks a lot of La Croix :)
I used to collect them as a kid, and I just found them today while cleaning out storage. I have a regular plastic grocery bag about 3/4 of the way full of them. Not sure how many there are... I would say a few thousand if I had to guess.

I make purses and wallet from poptabs. I have friends and family who donated the tabs to me. I just make them as gift for people. But you can see a lot of video on TH-cam on people making things from poptabs.
Yes the tabs are pure aluminum as where the cans are not they have a thin plastic lining on the inside but the tabs can also be donated to the Ronald McDonald house to help pay for housing accommodations for families with sick kids

Another reason is the cans have paint on the outside and varnish on the inside so it recycles as #2 aluminum. The tabs have neither of those and goes for #1 aluminum.

I collect them to boost my mental health I have been struggling with Suicidal Depression I'm not sure if that's a thing but yeah I like collecting them so I can have smt fun to do btw I'm 11 1/2 I'm pretty young and the whole getting better thing is going REALLY VERY SLOW but I've have been tryna hang on a little longer to days to weeks to months and so on I have had doubts since I was abt 6 or 8 at 6 I was kinda insecure abt really small things till I learned I didn't need to fit in to be Nice and Kind, when I was 8 tho,6 through 8 I have been bullied a lot I was still nice and kind but I started getting more insecure abt myself I hate that I wasn't pretty and skinny but then it got worse, and worse, and worse, now these days I starve myself I never would believe I was pretty, I have so many problems I hate myself I hate my brothers but I don't won't to talk abt them I want the rest of my 99% to stay hidden as possible.
The tabs have the grade "bright" aluminum, meaning that there is no ink, varnish, lacquer, or epoxy. They command a higher price when scrapping which is how the Ronald McDonald charity makes money off of them. The cans are "decorated" grade and have the aforementioned extras.
@R2D2677 I work in aluminum can manufacturing, the clean aluminum that doesn't have all of the product applications gets a better scrap price than the stuff with the ink on it.
They had those old tabs in the 1970s.
Apparently it contains titanium to make it stronger to open the can because aluminium on it’s own was not strong enough to stand up to opening the can

This is just a goofy thing to make people feel like they are being altruistic, when really it's a silly waste of time. It takes about 30 whole cans to make a pound, and over 1000 tabs, and no they aren't worth anymore as scrap aluminum. Maybe with a massive amount the tabs would be worth a few pennies more per pound, but not much. Spending an hour volunteering for a charity would be worth astronomically more to doing actual charity, than spending an hour picking of soda tabs. Fantastic way of teaching people do fake gestures instead of actually helping anyone

Aluminum comes in all different strengths and quality the tops are better quality my crutches are aluminum and those can hold up like 350 pounds walking on them

Most of what you reported here is bogus. The whole program is bogus. The top is the same aluminum as the can, and I forbid anyone to make extra effort to screw with the pop tops. Especially if you make any extra effort to make a trip anywhere to transport tops. All they do with these things is collect them for scrap aluminum value... maybe 40 to 60 cents per pound. Do EVERYONE a favor and donate 50 cents or a dollar (or 5 dollars) to the charity and they will come out LIGHTYEARS ahead, and the environment wont suffer from transporting tops!!! Just always recycle the entire can and then give a buck when you can.
The entire can is infinitely recyclable. I'm pissed at myself for spending time researching this stuff and pissed that my parents ask me for tabs (and even more pissed that I started saving them), and totally feel bad for anyone wasting their time searching for tabs. The freaking things are worth literally like 50 cents per thousand or so. The entire can is worth about 50 cents per 30-50 of them (depending on where you are).
They used to tell us they were for making wheelchairs.

I feel like this video should be part of a series or something. It started to go somewhere and then it just stopped. No explanation of why people collect the tabs, just some guesstimations.
The tabs are just aluminum, the cans themselves are thin aluminum with a plastic film and paint. So melting the tabs are better because they wont have impurities like the plastic and paint.

The whole tab thing is pure BS. It's wordplay for the purpose of 'awareness' of the cause. I've followed the trail and yes, it does buy (fill in your favorite disease) medical treatment. But the money is not there, just awareness. A tab is one quarter of a gram. Times 4 for one gram then times 28 for one ounce then times 16 for one lb and that's almost 1,800 tabs for 1 lb of aluminum. Going rate of $1.13 per lb. That's a lot of beer or soda, both of which should not be overly consumed. The tabs and cans are the same aluminum. One can is worth perhaps 1.5 of a penny so recycling cans pays more. The only true advantage is the double dipping that occurs in US states that have deposit bottles and cans. Returning the empty can (tab or not) still gives you back the nickel or dime you pre-paid as a deposit. That's worth way more than recycling. In those states, you get the deposit back AND some charity gets their $0.0006 per tab. Otherwise, it's a lying scam told to children under the premise of real money when it's just 'awareness'. The paint and plastic inner coating of a can quickly disintegrates when everything is smelted. Relegate to an art-form or hobby. Not worth real money.
