    I remember this guy. The only time Levistus is let out of his frozen prison is when Asmodeus calls meeting of all Lords. . At the end of epic level campaign of D&D 3.5 we played, my swashbuckler crashed Asmodeus' meeting of all devil lords to challenge Levistus to a duel for title of The Best Fencer of the Planes. After log and epic duel I won and then promptly Asmodeus smoked me xD
    Which was all accroding to plan of the rest of our team which used this as a distraction to sprang some soul from Asmodeus' lair in Nessus. I posthumously gained the title and party outwited Asmodeus. Good times.

    Amazing that Levistus, who was arguably one of the most talented swordsmen in existence, was reduced to a frozen prisoner.
    Even when Asmodeus decides to briefly release Levistus for the infrequent meetings of the Archervils, Levistus is just a sodden, malnourished mess…his muscles have atrophied, so he can’t even move on his own.

    Theory: Levistus was with Asmodeus's wife when Glasya (who was infatuated with Levistus) showed up and in a rage murdered her mother. Then Asmodeus froze Levistus to punish Glasya. She will forever sit in the 6th layer unable to do anything to Levistus in the 5th. So she is tormented by lusting and loathing for Levistus.

    • @monsieurdorgat6864
      @monsieurdorgat6864 3 ปีที่แล้ว +19

      Eh, why bother answering the question at all? Some things are best left unanswered. Honestly even the whole "oh man I found someone else in your bed!?" silly sitcom stuff just feels out of place for near-omniscient and timeless entities of supposedly supernatural intelligence.
      The "Devil forever trapped in ice" - the reference to how Satan is depicted in Cocytus in Dante's Inferno - is super cool. I'm more inclined to say that there might be some truth to the idea of the malicious tryst, but that's an idea vastly simplified by novice wizards. The layers of nuance are more numerous and complex for most mortals to really understand, and even the basic reality is something they vastly misinterpret.
      It could even be possible that this arrangement is entirely Levistus' plan. There are so many potential ways you could interpret Levistus's prison within the prison that is Baator.

      @@themalakorein396 Oh, I know that Greek mythology is basically a soap opera! It's part of why it's entertaining.
      For DnD though, it changes the tone I'd want to potentially set. While I'm totally down with the gods of mortals acting goofy like most gods of antiquity, because they're fundamentally empathetic and similar to the flawed individuals that believe in them (and maybe once were), I think that devils that are fundamentally NOT related to humanity and have existed for almost all of time aught to be different, and through that alien-yet-scarily-familiar aspect much more intimidating.
      I know that's a much more modern take, but I prefer having both sources of inspiration - just in different places that make some basic philosophical sense.

    • @themalakorein396
      @themalakorein396 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@monsieurdorgat6864 Ahh now I see what you are saying. Personally in fantasy settings I like to go a slightly different route. Gods are what humans could be with ultimate power, while devils are what they more often than not become with ultimate power. (In most situations I prefer that devils and gods represent chaos and order, both potentially evil if taken too far, and both are necessary to stop that from happening because I really don't like the concept of evil and good. It's too simplistic for such great entities for me.

    What if, plot twist: Levistus was always loyal to Asmodeus, who was also very aware of both Bensozia's treacherous inclinations AND Glasya's rebellious delusions. So to deal with both menaces and give a cool gift to his best bro, Asmodeus devised this plot for Levistus to "Betray" him. The frozen cage? Invincibility for his true body. The temporary loss of his status as lord of Stygia? Just vacation time to chill. The obligation to help anyone escape? Easy soul-buying hotline so he can always have enough souls to pay his quota AND keep some spare.
    Heck, it's even possible Asmodeus gave Levistus a secret avatar so he could go around to do stuff, albeit strictly anonymous.

    • @theenderdestruction2362

      This could be a cool plot twist to a story make it so the party had to defend this strange dude who keeps paying em out their noses for said protection all whilst slowly discovering this secret and at the end have two options either A. Try to spill the secret and either die or get hunted or the more tantlising options B. Levistus keeps this hidden from asmodeus, he lets em free and he continues to use their services when ever he feels like traveling and pays em handsomely, the drawbacks would be basically a campaign of a escort quest and the party is probably attacked a lot sense the man is strange and well wealthy

    So, Levistus bumbled himself into a Faustian deal that actually made him far more powerful than when he was free. He's frozen solid in an invincible indestructible iceberg but his influence still reaches out as an unstoppable wave of subtle power-brokering for Levistus. Something tells me Levistus found a way out of his damnation but decided he was "far better off in lock-up" and decided to simply not get out. Well, not yet.

      @@DarthSidian unfoturnatly most of the DM's that i know doesn't like running evil PC campaign. They're kind of snowflakes and easy to trigger, so playing something straight out of the nine hells would be difficult for them to digest.
      I mean, i would understand if players around the table were bad and would want an evil setting just for the sake of being evil, but even with well rounded players that would do things "correctly" without having an "evil ego trip", both of these DM struggle with anykind of "abuse" so forget about cruel acts, treasons involving murder, tortures, manipulation etc etc...
      And i wouldn't want to play a "washed up" devilish warlock, it wouldn't be fun, nor in character.

    One twist I kind of love if they pulled... is that either Levistus or Asmodeus did this on purpose. Levistus drew ire from everyone and was eventually going to be dispatched, while he is a great duelist his charisma is his greater power.
    .
    Certainly the ironic "You must help anyone who asks" is bad... but think of it another way, it also means he would gather far more people who would possibly free him without causing Asmodeus to lose face.

He's been making a bunch of deals with the party and he recently became a pit fiend because of a really good deal he made, so he's very close.

    Honestly not a big of Levistus because of the whole mother and daughter story thing because it falls into the really tired narrative of villains are just straight up evil and yes I get that they are devils, but DnD goes out it's way to show that Amodeus is an interesting figure because he simply doesn't see himself as the bag guy, he believes what he is doing is right and as such is not a horrible person deep down, it's quite possible he could loved his wife and daughter.
    But instead of an actual complex narrative with betrayal and hardship, it's just, super smooth devil comes in and chats his wife and daughter so he can bang them betray Amodeus. Because the most complex a female devil is, 'oh she sexy she must do sex'. While at least the narrative of him killing his wife because she refused him shows signs of loyalty and arrogance on Levistus, which only makes more sense, because Yeah Levistus is smooth, but Amodeus is said to be the most charismatic being 'in existence'.
    And just, I hate how one dimensional that version makes everyone.

    Speaking of the love triangle between the mother and daughter of hell. I've had a storyline with Moloch having his followers trying to find resources in the upper planes like the soul forge of Moradin or maybe maybe something to donwith Primus, but the end result being to recreate the sound of Glasyaa's mother and find her a new body as a tribute to Asmodeous to allow Moloch to re-enter the hells in his normal form. Still unsure how to recreate the soul. Trying not to just make it a wish, since anyone high level could do that.
