  • I’m an Eisner-nominated comic artist from Singapore. This is a behind-the-scenes video on how I create comics. This comic page is about my baby boy Toby getting very sick last year.
I bring you through the steps I take and I also talk about the principles I observe along the way. I hope it inspires you or gives you more clarity on how to draw your own comics!
Share this with friends who want to learn more about drawing comics!
I’m the author of 2 graphic novels - Monsters, Mayonnaise & Miracles and The Ollie Comics: Dairy of a first-time dad. I work as a freelance illustrator creating comics, picture books and illustrations for ad agencies.
The ebook version of The Ollie Comics can be purchased here: payhip.com/b/A...

Thanks for the recent videos Drew. You’ve been churning out plenty of “tutorials”, it’s good to take a break and just upload a non-commentary drawing video to give yourself some space and time till the next tutorial. Helps prevent content burnouts.

Thanks Hafiz! That’s good advice:) I’m realising that tutorials do take a lot more work and time 😅 a non-commentary drawing video without commentary hmm. It does sound more relaxing!

i love these videos so much, it's really fun watching another comic artist create their own work! also i love the brushes you use digitally, maybe a video on your fav digital tools would be nice to see! keep up the great work!

Thank you! It’s lovely to meet another artist who creates comics too. You’ve made your own books. Those take lots of time and effort. Like running a marathon. Well done on those! And keep going!:)
For my digital brush, I basically used “Blackburn” on procreate. Has nice rough edges but gives flat colours. But yeah, I could do something about using digital tools + special techniques in the future:) thanks!

I have multiple personal projects I'm trying to do whilst working my job and it's really hard finding the time and energy with family responsibilities and daily chores. I think what you said about there being no perfect time to work on personal stuff, you just have to grab the time when it's there is a great mentality and I'm going to try and think like that more:) Thanks Andrew

Hi Tom. We do have a similar situation:) I’m still working on that. Grabbing time does help. Maybe there are other parts of the puzzle I’m still figuring out. Like scheduling bits to do every week so it builds up into something bigger eventually. Some forward planning is involved. I still haven’t got that fully down yet. That’s why my comics are still coming out slowly:)

@@Drewscape-art I definitely haven't gotten it down yet 😅, but a schedule sounds like a great idea. I'm very keen on having a practice outside of my job so perhaps a dedicated time every evening to chip away at a project is the way to go. Thanks again:)

I love the zoom nib mostly because I like the broader stronger lines. 😂

So cool! Amazing process ! But what about just doing the whole thing in Procreate? It has pens in there too which can be adjusted
    On another note…
Herge drew Tintin the same way too , except it weren’t his own experiences that he mimicked , rather a photographer her admired.

    • @Drewscape-art
      @Drewscape-art  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Interesting background on Herge.
I do draw comics both ways- completely digital on procreate and with a real pen too. But the results does feel different sometimes. Or the experience and feeling drawing with a pen feels very different from drawing with an iPad. It’s like mind works and thinks differently. I do like the results where I used a pen more. But it’s a personal preference. I’ve seen amazing art by artists who use completely digital tools too. So I can’t say one way is absolutely better than the other:)
Oh, I do notice that digital programs cannot imitate some of the strokes some of my fountain pens can do. And definitely can’t reproduce that feedback feeling. So I’d use a real tool when I crave that feedback of nib scratching on paper:)

Hey Drew , just came across your Singapore 2050 comic blog post but apparently the sg website seems to be out of order. Is there any other way I’d be able to read it? Seems like a very interesting story of generations and Singapore’s future

Hi yes it’s still working. It just takes awhile to upload since the pdf file is larger. Use this link: drive.google.com/file/d/1d3sxYIvBnYJLeQyEdpqXWCJ9qFpqEzYL/view?usp=drivesdk
