    Joe, this is a great presentation. I'm a 71-year-old retiree just getting into OBS from a hobbyist point of view. This video is the kind of overview I've been looking for. Thank you very much for sharing the information. Onward and upward.

    So fucking wholesome to watch a tutorial by someone who knows how to TEACH stuff. Came for green screen and learned a gazillion other things I didn't even dare to touch before. Instant go-to channel. And this is before I even got to the green screen section.

    Hope you all are safe and well. Thanks for the video, enjoyed watching it. Was really considering ManyCam, but not anymore. I found out that you can add a countdown timer which is already built into OBS (latest version of obs). What you need to do first is add a "Text" to your Sources, name it (Timer) for convenience, and then configure it the way you like (write anything in text to see how it looks - you can choose impact font with biggest size to get good quality). Then in OBS, go to Tools menu and select "Scripts", hit the "+" sign and select "countdown.lua"; when it's added, make sure to select it on the panel you see. Add the time you want and in "Text Source" parameter, select the Text source you added to sources in the first step so that the timer can use the font, size, etc that you configured the text source to use. Toggle the preview (studio mode) to see it in action.

    Joe you rock! I looked at your video "Learn OBS" and truthfully felt a bit overwhelmed since I thought it would be distracting to make additions or adjustments while in a class teaching. This video has shown me that I can make preset scenes and use them for my background. I am really excited to use it today for the first time! Thank you so much for all of your instruction and clear, simple to understand explanations. Now that I have a feel for it I am planning to go back and revisit the other video and hopefully add these wonderful dimensions to my teaching. Thanks again for all you've done!

    Hello Joe, as for drawing on the screen, I am sure there is probably an obs plugin for this, but here is a life hack to get it done, what you need is any graphics manipulation program, photoshop, gimp mspaint etc. Next do a separate window capture in obs set it to capture your graphics program, then go into filters add a crop filter and crop out the interface of the program, next create a Green canvas, you can probably see where this is going, then go back to obs and activate the chroma key filter on the window capture then its as easy as doodling in the graphics program in any other color other then green or whatever you have the chroma filter set to.

    Nice tutorial Joe, It's kind of funny how the sound became a bit hollowed as if talking thru a pipe when you added the 2nd scene with desktop.. Sounded much better before you did that, as you might have noticed your 2nd mic readout showing you talking as well. should have turned the second mic setting down so your sound stay nice... anyway. not to pic. I would like ask. I play a game that can be windowed or full screen no mater what I try doing I cant capture the game in the game option. I have to use the window select option. I would really like to use jest the game capture option if you know how., could you direct me to a link showing it's settings. my game is Cities Skylines. Hope you can share. as I am sure others are also trying to use jest the game capture option...

    OBS learning curve seems greater than ManyCam. Also, the current ManyCam allows for drag and drop graphics, whole drag and drop of a PowerPoint presentation, and use of hardware acceleration. You might want to do a new evaluation in light of ManyCam’s improvements.
    However, all that being said, very good tutorial of OBS!

    Incredible video. One important question I can think of is... does it matter how zoomed in you are when recording your face with the green screen behind you? I am guessing that as long as the green screen covers the four corners of what your camera sees, that you can basically make your face smaller by resizing that footage, put yourself in a corner, and then using the picture or video you want and place it over the green screen part of the video... But if you resize yourself, aren't you also resizing the amount of green screen? Or does it not matter and as long as the green screen is in the video, then whatever program you use, it will detect the whole screen as one using a green screen and it will apply it to the whole ratio and you can make yourself smaller and put yourself in the corner, while the whole screen is the background? Sorry if I am not making too much sense... I guess I will try different things and see what works best. I will get OBS because Adobe Premiere Pro is $20.99 a month and I would only use it for the green screen and I wouldn't pay that much just to occasionally edit a green screen video once in a blue moon lolol Thanks again and cheers!!!

    • @JoeMilneEnglish
      @JoeMilneEnglish  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers. It's best to record yourself at high resolution and big if you want to chroma key the green out, if you shrink yourself there'll be "less quality green" for the software to work with, I guess. But yeah, just resize it after recording, no worries.

    • @MelodicEgghead
      @MelodicEgghead 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@JoeMilneEnglish ahhh so chroma is basically the program recognizing all the green and separating it from myself? So I'll not zoom in so much so there's leftover green on the ends. But what about a program that I can use for implementing the green screen that's free? Thanks for the response though!!! Cheers

    You’ve probably guessed I’m watching a lot of your videos because all of them are simply ACE!!! Can I ask you something though - I understand how to use green screen and adjust the background - you have sorted that for me. But how can I do say me and a powerpoint or screen share I am showing at the same time. I don’t want to record two separate video clips (one of me, one of say screen share) - so is there a way to do it all in one at the same time? I hope this makes sense.

    Hey Joe, I want to ask, when I start working for an online tutoring company, can I pick any software I want ?
    And if the companies have their own prescribed video-call software for their employees, what is the most common ones ?

    Hi Joe, new fan here! A big thanks for all your time and effort put into sharing this content. Genuine material there with fun humor:) Keep up the great work on building this channel! I can really see the artistic and creative side as well with the videos. I was wondering if you could also help clarify (being that you're really happy with OSB) if it's possible to teach online for iTutorGroup using this OBS software? Their websites recommends Manycam and on many of your vids it's what you use as well. Not sure if that's something iTutor insists on or eventually would due to the lack of features you mentioned on OBS (when you're doing all the writing in class, can't tell if that's done with the iTutor platform or Manycam software for example) What do you think? Is it necessary to invest in that Manycam lifetime studio price to teach for them online? Much appreciated!!

    Great video, Joe. Love it. Especially Your green screen explanation and I loved seeing that obs take such little computing power.
    Drawing and handwriting in obs: add a window source with a drawing program like autodesk sketchbook- you will need some pen and tablet e.g.from wacom - then You can handwrite or draw in OBS. I use it like a spontaneous flipchart in my online teaching. If You like it as an overlay, use a chromakey filter. Thanks to Your video I just got the idea. Thanks. 😁
    For timer / stopwatch create a video with the time running. Than add it as a scene or a source in overlay. Let me know if it works for You. Thanks again for the great explanations. Rob

    Hi,
    The reason that your Desktop is not showing most likely has to do with your graphics card not being fully compatible with the OBS Studio software. Aparently, OBS Studio's command to perform that task does not trigger a specific CPU Register responsible to perform tasks one of which is what you are trying to do. If you contact the manufacturer's support line and explain this issue they probably have a patch or an update that would address this issue. Ulternatively you can go to their site and see if they have a software upgrade for your card that fixes your issue.

    Joe, this is quite useful information to listen to and learn how to use OBS and ManyCam. I tried my recording using OBS and a small pop message comes up saying, "Starting the output failed. Please check the log for details.." What could the problem be?

  • @johnsnoap
    @johnsnoap 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

    When you were comparing your CPU usage between the OBS and ManyCam, it looks like the reason OBS' CPU usage was lower than ManyCam was that OBS was using the graphics card whereas ManyCam was not using the graphics card. Perhaps you need to change a graphics card setting to allow ManyCam to use the graphics card?

    • @JoeMilneEnglish
      @JoeMilneEnglish  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      I realised this not long ago. I didn't know ManyCam has a GPU setting. Still, I think OBS uses much less resources than ManyCam, in my experience.
