      I actually started a subscription service (Hellofresh), because I wanted to cut down on the amount of food I was throwing away. That same week I threw out 1/2 pound of hamburger, 3 zucchinis, 2 pears, a bag of lettuce, and all of the accompanying packaging. The amount of food I was tossing with only being able to grocery shop once a week at most since I work a second shift job, was staggering.

      JK9610 Extra fuel is used to send the packaging back to Blue Apron. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if Blue Apron just throws the trash away into the dump rather than recycle it.

    The reason a lot of people are still hungry is because they are used to much larger portions than they should eat.

    • @TheFearingtonChronicles
      @TheFearingtonChronicles 7 ปีที่แล้ว +134

      Sierra Bird I agree. In america our portions are way too big. So that's probably why people are still hungry with Blue Apron.

      Sierra Bird funny how your stomach can also shrink if you eat small portion long enough. I've been on a small portion diet for 2 months now and I can't even finish a BurgerKing burger anymore while before I would finish the burger with large fried and small side of onion ring AND a coke. 😂😂

      @merrilyr.5484 6 ปีที่แล้ว +58

      Okay, but again this is a company that sells in America whose mission statement is not to help you get adjusted to smaller portions. It's not a diet-food company, it's geared toward American families who don't necessarily have the time or the wherewithal to shop frequently and make fantastic recipes by themselves. Because of that, Blue Apron is the clear loser.
      And I mean, I goes without saying that America is privileged in that we can eat healthily, but look at these two people who did the review, do you think they're overweight? We're blessed to live in a country where we can eat until we are full, and they were saying they did not even get there, so why pay more money for a service that barely gets you full when you can pay less for a service that's easier to follow AND gives you leftovers?

    I just don't see a reason why someone would order these meal prep boxes when you can get a ton of food with the same price!! Even getting grocerys delivered to your door is much cheaper than this service. And internet is full of easy and free recipes you can use! If someone uses these I would be interested to hear why!

    • @uyenst
      @uyenst 7 ปีที่แล้ว +181

      Zirconi because they work out of the box. You need to buy gorcery, wash and pick the greens (he put the spinach right in, they are pre cleaned, obviously), having to plan dinner so that the whole week is healthy (which for mean especially might mean pasta all week because not many give enough damns), look for the recipes... All these steps take time (and time is money), so I think it's not that strange that some people would choose to subscribe

    • @uyenst
      @uyenst 7 ปีที่แล้ว +54

      And fiy I dont subcribe, but i think each person might have their own idea of what is good value for money, now if the prefer to have one less thing to think about and still get fresh and healthy meals, I don't see the problem (you can say it's preposterous to sloth on thinking about food, but meal anxiety is real and personal, i've seen too many). Moreover, they are supposedly supporting local farms by buying in bulk and in season, one plus point. If only a the plastics would be biodegradable, then it's perfect

    When I go grocery shopping I tend to overspend trying to stock up, so these recipe ingredient delivery services are awesome! I love to cook in the evenings and try new recipes, but it’s just my daughter and I so there used to be too many leftovers, with these it’s just enough for our dinner and enough for my lunch the next day. I LOVE getting all the healthy produce delivered to us.
    Home Chef and Terra Kitchen offer fruit and salad options, and Marley Spoon and Plated have unique recipes also. We switch off with all of these every week depending what fruit or produce we need or what meals we’re craving. I’ve cooked over 100 new healthy recipes in the past year with these services and saved money, plus we eat healthier. Most of the packaging is recyclable. ✌🏼

    We tried Blue Apron. I was very impressed by the freshness of the produce especially. I found sorting out the box fun the first time, then it DID become like a chore. It was nice to not need to go to the grocery store because I was suffering neck and back pain at the time. I liked the recipes but exactly as you stated in this video, there wasn’t any leftovers. That can be a good thing for some people, but we like to have at least one serving of leftovers to tote to workplace. The family missed our regular recipes that I am sooo tired of making.Stopping the service & restarting was absolutely no issue, they had great customer service. A couple comments on the price...yes you can go to the store and buy those ingredients cheaply, but there can be the additional expenses from the add-on purchases, those other “good deals, “ the Easter product clearance junk ...also I think these meals in a box with the photos of every step are a good way for tweens to start learning to cook. So I think it is a fun thing to do now and then to break up the monotony.

    His assessment is exactly right. These services are for busy professionals who have the money to use these. Of course anyone can use them but realistically, there comes a a point where the price outweighs the product. I considered a service like Blue Apron cause I wanted less food waste and to be more experimental but this convinces me not to. I would probably use it to try out some recipes every once in a while without having to commit to large portions you get at the store but I'll think I'll stick to grocery shopping otherwise.

He is autistic...so once he finds a meal/food he likes..that's all he wants for weeks at a time. I end up cooking daily just for me. **before you screamers start complaining that I don't cook for my child..i do. In big batches-I sneak veggies into the food he is locked on-freeze in small personal portions for him to reheat.** I haven't found any of these food boxes that would be worth getting at all just for one person.

    I have tried Blue Apron, I didn't find it value for money. But the Hello fresh is good. Ingredients measured and packaged per meal and waterproof recipes with accurate information, simple to follow. All recipes turned out amazing. Price per service $10 is bit too much but you are getting a healthy chef meal with least efforts.

    Great video! I've tried many and would only possibly do Martha & Marley Spoon in the future, because the recipes/quality was awesome! Besides that, I couldn't justify the price as I spend $150 per person per month for incredibly delicious, filling, including organic foods (and paper goods, etc.) 3 meals a day. With a bit of planning and some couponing, you can really save a ton on gourmet meals. And these services are not simple... it's still a ton of time and dishes (I'm a chef) :)

      Hi Megan! My biggest tips are to really study (lots of sites online) how to do coupon matchups, plus look for weekly sales. Also, we eat more simply now and cook once, and eat leftovers or changed up meals for 3 nights... like get a bunch of chicken and do a few nights with chicken, veg, etc. then another night in tacos, or pasta. Also, I do a lot of meal prep so I'm not tempted to go out (which we almost never do). Finally, eat by season and buy produce that is in season, and don't feel bad about using frozen veggies. I also cut out most dairy recently, which saved a ton of money, too! Good luck!

    I'm just now trying this type of service. Before I saw this, I went with Hello Fresh so it sounds like I made a good choice. I like the fact that Hello Fresh would let me see the types of meals they have before signing up. Blue Apron would not let me see meals until I paid (not cool). With the discount for the first month, it was a deal for 2 people. I enjoy not having to go to the grocery store and having the ingredients show up ready to cook. I'm waiting on my first box so the jury is still out on whether the meals are good and whether I'm saving money.

      Rhinopocalypes or you’re just tired of throwing away food that you never ate because it was too much. Recipes online are good but they’re usually for more than two people. I’d even try to reduce the ingredients to suit my family of 2 but I’d still be a waste. When the recipe says half a cup of sour cream and you have to buy a 16oz of it because there’s nothing smaller, or a whole bag of spinach when you only need a cup. These boxes send you the exact amount, now my fridge is “empty” in a good way.

    I think it's a really bad testament to our society that services like that even exist. The only thing you save is a little bit of time to go to a grocery store (time most people can easily make up for by not playing with their cellphones for - 30 minutes).
    I currently run our household of 2 on $12/day (for food) - that is 2 meals for 2 people = 4 portions (we don't do breakfast) which means we pay about $3/portion. Yes, I spend about an hour in the kitchen every day including cleanup. Take that together with shopping and say it's 90 minutes for shopping, cooking and cleanup every day. Of course some days it's more some it's less - 90 minutes is the average and of course I don't go shopping every day - I'm just averaging the time spent.
    For the $3 per portion I can't do NY strip steak, but I can do fresh tacos entirely from scratch (including the tacos - which once you had homemade fresh tacos you'll never go back to those nasty packets from the store). I can do sushi, I can do all sorts of things that don't require ingredients exceeding $3/portion. For me it's a challenge to go lower - ultimately I want to try a $1/portion month, but that will be stretching it.
    In my book the cheapest and healthiest way to eat is to buy and cook yourself. People come up with all sorts of excuses why takeout, eating out, delivery services etc. are required to live. They're not, they're conveniences.

    reason I stopped Blueapron. at first the recipes were good with mixing it up. then eventually it was the same old sides and mains switched around. by that, 1 day-pan seared fish with fried rice. 2nd- seared chicken with fried rice. 3rd seared chicken with sweet potatoes. and a million sweet potatoes. it got so boring. then eventually 90% of the time some important ingredient was missing. I sometimes could go with out it, but others I had to drive to the store to get it. I must've wrote them 8 times to tell them. still wrong. I stopped

    I feel nearly the opposite on your reviews. I don't mind loose items in the box (with Blue Apron) because one point is less waste. Blue apron has less (packaging) waste and who has room for those huge (Hello Fresh) boxes in the fridge? My fridge is nearly full already, and Hello Kitty takes up an entire shelf by itself when you leave everything in their packages. Food portions? STARVING? REALLY? LMAO... I don't want extra food to put away for leftovers later. Hello Kitty is much more basic and less challenging. Blue Apron stretched me and taught me more about flavors and actual cooking processes. PLUS Blue Apron is $10 less than Hello Fresh. (to me, a single man that gets the 2 person package, already have twice the portions I need, so I am getting 6 meals from the 2 people [x3] kit). I used to over eat. The BA portions are perfect for me and I'm still full. BTW, I am 6'4" 260 and it's more than enough food to eat. I have yet to eat a serving and feel hungry or starving. LMAO.
    I found BA to be top quality, delicious and more of a challenge to cook, and found HK as basic less challenging and simpler recipes. So if you want to pay MORE and have simpler food recipes with less of a cooking challenge, by all means, pay more for less. If you enjoy high quality, near gourmet recipes, less waste, for less cost, try Blue Apron.
    *ALSO- Blue Apron delivers the package to my door without a signature by UPS. I've never had a problem with a delivery. Hello Fresh requires a signature and it was some random guy (not uniformed, not professional looking) in a white van (YIKES), and luckily I just so happened to be home when he came. I don't know what they would do with my package if I wasn't there when they came, but he was a bit creepy.
    Let me define "challenging" = I don't mean it's hard or difficult, just more involved, more detailed and BA challenged me to prepare, organize and pay closer attention. I could cook HK without their recipes or their ingredients without a lot of thought, and I've cooked nearly the same things before from the HK choices, so there was no excitement or anticipation. I would have never tried the Blue Apron recipes without this service and recipes cards. I am more satisfied cooking a gourmet meal and having it turn out near perfect to my tastes and my budget, plus I am challenged.
    My end result is; Blue Apron is the better choice for me.

      Alan Kluttz Same. I've not tried HF but I have looked thru their recipes and they don't seem nearly as challenging or creative as BA. BA portions were plenty for me as well and I never walked away feeling hungry. BA includes ingredients you wouldn't typically buy at the store and if you did they'd be crazy expensive. I'm honestly kind of surprised at the conclusion. HF doesn't seem worth the price because of how basic the recipes are. At least with BA I'm getting something new that I wouldn't think to try.

    thank you for the information, Matt. I was always curious about the 2 meal delivery options. I will have to try this sometime.

      Now we know why Blue Apron and Hello Fresh are considered one of the best, if not the best meal kit delivery company.

    Great video and so glad Holly was able to join you. I agree with Holly, shopping at the grocery store is so much more cost effective than these services. Have a great week and congrats to Jan!
