      @@iRepairAutos 400 mL of very dark fluid came out. Through the upper hole I added 600 mL of new fluid, then decided to add another 200 mL. I then removed the large lead weights from the back of the transfer case, opened the inspection hole and let the extra drain out. After driving the car about 10 miles, the shuddering/groaning that was occuring during tight turns, parking etc was nearly gone. I would do a second fluid change, but without a lift, its a PIA job! While I was down there I also replaced the transmission mount (under the TC) and the front driveshaft flex disc.

      Sounds like your wheel bearing is worn out or damaged or needed adjustment and re-greased the bearings. You can lift the tires up and spin it to see which is bad. Those wheel bearings always go bad or get out of alignment and needed to readjust. The wheel bearings is held by one single screw type nut that need a Allen wrench to unlock.

    Hi Keith. I have a humming and scraping noise when driving on the highway. I replaced the front wheel bearings and that didn’t fix it. The mechanic swapped out the front differential with a used one and that didn’t work either. He says it’s the transfer case. Could it be making a scraping noise though? Scraping is more pronounced when going on the highway and turning the wheel slightly around bends.

    • @iRepairAutos
      @iRepairAutos  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      with miles that low I would definitely change the fluid before assuming anything worse. How do you know it's not a noisy wheel bearing?

    • @rp1268
      @rp1268 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@iRepairAutos I took it in for a wheel bearing replacement this morning. When the tech was using his scope to listen to the noise while it was on the lift and being driven, he also heard noise from the transfer case. I will find out tomorrow whether the wheel bearing replacement gets rid of the noise completely from inside the cabin. They will work on my car in the morning. In the meantime I started googling transfer case problems and came across many links where the chains stretch and require a rebuild. They are replacing the fluid regardless so will take it from there. Thanks as always for your contribution and help. It’s really helped me diy my car whenever possible (i.e. when I don’t need a lift). I’m having tranny cooler lines replaced, front wheel bearing and a transmission service done by an independent right now. Hopefully after this the car will run without major problems for a while (though I still have some things that I haven’t had break yet like the camshaft magnets).

    • @rp1268
      @rp1268 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Update:
      I had the wheel bearing replaced and that fixed 95% of the noise. I have a small amount left which could be a tire out of balance (i rotated them last week). I am also now actively listening for noise so maybe it was there the whole time and i'm only hearing it now.
      The transfer case was making some noise so he replaced the fluid and said don't worry about it for now. Also replaced the front diff fluid, pulleys, tensioner, drive belt, transmission cooler lines and did a transmission service while I was there (parts I provided from fcp).
      The only downside is that I have a leaky oil pan which on this car to fix requires the subframe to be dropped. This sucks because its not worth fixing that. I will see how the leak evolves. Hopefully it doesn't get worse. Do you know of any way to patch it from the outside? FWIW i am using M1 0w40 european formula.
      Other than that the car runs fine so hopefully i can get a few more years out of it.
      Cheers
