I think towards the end of the series (particularly, after Niles finally confessed his feelings for Daphne & even Roz was shipping them), they had kind of tempered their feud & if not become friends, at least came to an understanding & respected each other. Most shows would play that string until it breaks (or it goes off the air), rather than let relationships grow.
Roz and Niles were pretty much friends by this time. It was only his indifference to her, and his jibes in the first half of the show’s run which slowed down the friendship. They were pretty close by the end of the series. Roz didn’t need to sit vigil for him when he underwent heart surgery but she did. There were very few jibes between the two characters in the last couple of seasons.
Roz woulda always looked out for him I think even in the earlier seasons. Just because you don't get along doesn't mean you suddenly abandon people you know to a crisis. That's the difference between not getting along and actually loathing another person. Plus she has to work with Frasier. Its not gonna be great going forward to have to explain why you did nothing when he was on his way over.
In the closing segment, Niles brings the aprons back on hangers, cleaned and pressed, and proudly holds up a card case with his own supply of stirring straws.
Roz really came through for Niles in this episode. Her actions demonstrates her unyielding loyalty to her friends. And Frasier really kept cool under pressure to see to his brother. Roz and Frasier make a really great team!
The funny undertone here is that Roz and Frasier bring the necessary experience to this situation: Frasier has dealt with his brother's flipouts, and Roz has helped shepherd plenty of naked drunks through the morning after.
@@captainvladmir7535 Exactly. As Frasier mentions, it wasn't the first time Niles had a panic attack. So, instinctively, Frasier kinda knew what was going on and knew how to deal with the situation.
Making "the last straw" a literal thing was a stroke of genius. I had never seen this done in a sitcom before this episode. Best line (and one of the best of the entire eleven years, for that matter) = 2:01 "This man's tips alone have probably paid for all the pot you'll ever smoke!"
This scene is so wonderfully written, but the kicker for me is the slow, gradual breakdown of Niles. He doesn’t go crazy, or fly into a panic, he just goes, sits down, gets naked, and tunes everything out. Panic attacks hit people differently and props to the writers for going this direction, not just because it’s better for the comedy gags, but also a little more honest.
I worked with a guy who had epileptic seizures. He would get completely quiet, then do an odd task, like take a box of kleenex, carefully open it completely, then remove all the kleenex, and carefully place them back exactly where they had been before. We would give him a Pepsi, he'd quietly drink it, and a few minutes later, he'd be fine. He was always a nice guy, pleasant to work with.
Its a real testament to the actors and writers that something as simple as "its the last straw" could make me laugh so hard. DHP is fantastic. The timing and the delivery are so in sync

Honestly the directors of Frasier definitely made the best choice of the show's history casting David Hyde Pierce as "Niles". Originally it was just because he looked eerily like Kelsey Grammer in the early 80's (first appearance as Dr. Frasier Crane in Cheers), but in very short time it became so evident that Pierce portrayed Niles's character perfectly, with an exacting amount of lovable pretension, and almost stole the show from Grammer. In all honesty, the most heartwarming part of the show in my opinion is when Niles and Daphne finally become a couple.
I like Niles, Roz, and Bebe the best. DHP had impeccable timing. Peri Gilpin was super natural. And Harriet Harris as Bebe Glazer is just a flawless character actress. She could do a one woman show. Frasier had some of the best character growth on TV, while it always retained consistency.
When she said there were no more straws, you could clearly see a broken man.
This is a testament to all the characters, Niles being a gentleman paying for their coffee, Roz being the quippy bad ass and Frasier keeping kalm in psychiatric crisis

The last straw...
+Kyle Butler I can't believe I missed that! This just makes it so much more hilarious!!
+Kyle Butler the great thing is thought....we have now 2 broke girls which is just shitty sex pun after sex pun....then you watch shows like Frasier,Seinfeld,friends,cheers... and you get to watch all those seasons and laugh at true comedy.
+MovieHound17 yeah I know what you mean I've started watching blackadder again and its amazing. Those 4 are my fav american comedies plus parks and recs.
Lucy Hunt
thats a great one 2...The Office is another gem...It lost a lil steam after steve carell left, but was STILL wa funnier than some shit out now.
MovieHound17 I've only ever caught a few eps of that, not quite my thing but still pretty good.
You gotta love Roz because always had their back.
She is a sister from another mother.
I love how Roz is holding her cell phone like a gun.
Roz is a good friend, and Frasier is a good brother.
"I'm calling the cops!" Roz - "The Hell you are!!!! This man's Tips alone will probably pay for all the Pot you'll EVER SMOKE!!!!" This is by far MY FAVORITE EPISODE of 'Frasier'!!!!
Niles...look at yourself.
Hello!
There’s nothing worse than waking up naked with a bunch of cops standing around....I bet! LOL Roz is the best.
My fav sitcom, nothing else compares.
"Nothing worse that waking up naked with a bunch of cops standing around", I bet.
2:41 that "Don't touch me!" is maybe one of the most surprisingly menacing lines I've ever heard
Rox and Nile’s.. my two favourite characters for very different reasons. They work so well together
It was so cool how Roz was trying to protect Nile's during his meltdown.
That's a Friend!!!
The love Roz and Frasier show for Niles in this scene gives me the feels. 💖💖
Roz is tough!!! Heart of gold, and all that...
Sometimes when comedy is predictable it's still funny. When I first saw this, as soon as he asked for a straw and she said "that's the last one" I knew he would fall apart, but it was still hilarious when he did.
1 of the most Intelligent shows ever written/produced. Thats why I love it. Phenomenal actors/actress. Very Intelligent yet Funny as hell!
"That was the last one [straw]..." I just noticed the pun! Leave it up to Frasier. haha
The last straw gag is pretty good, great writing on this show.
David Hyde Pierce absolutely stole that show. He’s so funny and soooo talented!
No. The whole cast was irreplaceable.
@@redacted2275 all the cast had "their" episodes when it evolved around them. Great actors, great characters❤️❤️
The Craines and Daphne are like Roz's family...😍
haha Roz is pretty flawless in this scene.
Good grief, I forgot that he did this! Lot of respect to David Hyde-Pierce for having the balls to go through with this and do such a damn fine job in the process. Pun intended.
'The last straw.' xD
I didn't even see that until he spelled it out. Fantastic.
He's never been this close to butterfly net territory! Cracks me up!
Roz has a very precise set of skills
" the last straw"
I loooooooooooooooooooove roz's pants.
You have to love Roz. She's always been there, done that, but in a charming way.
I love how Ross sounds like she's robbing the place, and the way she is pointing her Last Straw at them , or whatever it is she's holding, as they walk out, and during most of the scene
Brilliantly acted by David, Kelsey and Peri. But I have to say, as bizarre and hilarious this was back in the 90s- A breakdown like this in PNW Portland and Seattle is NOW Normal. Sad times… miss these shows.
This one scene was definitely the best in the entire series and clearly displayed the courage, love, and friendship of Roz!
"I think I'm having that dream where I'm naked at Nervosa!"
"I think a lot of people are having that dream right now."
