There are types of ‘kenduri’ in Malay culture:
    - Kenduri Akikah (feast of newborn baby)
    - Kenduri cukur jambul (feast of trimming baby hair)
    - Kenduri kesyukuran/doa selamat (feast of thanksgiving)
    - Kenduri kahwin (feast of wedding ceremony)
    - Kenduri bertunang (feast of engagement day)
    - Kenduri arwah (a simple meal to feed guests who come to house when family member died)

pro tip when mom ask you to go with her to a kenduri:
    1. make sure to bring her favorite son/daughter along with the ride.
    2. make sure to bring your elder brother/sister so she wont nag about when to expect grandchildren from you.
    3. before departing, talk with mom and list out the name of all your distant relative. so you wont have awkward (who are you again?) conversation.
    4. delay the departure as much as possible, the early you are at the venue the longer mom will chit chat.
    5. your rice to 'lauk' ratio should be 1:3 (the more rendang/masak lemak you can fit in the plate the better it is)
    6. if there is girl or boy you're interested in there, skip the oily rendang altogether.
    best of luck my dude

There's also a "Kenduri Kahwin" in Malaysia... "Kahwin" means marriage/married... Same concept as you guys just went in this Video which is "makan-makan" style also in celebration of new couple... ☺️☺️☺️

  • @solehsolehsoleh
    @solehsolehsoleh 5 ปีที่แล้ว +12

You got confused there. "thanks to God in Appreciation for something good" is specifically for 'Kenduri Doa Selamat'.
The Word 'Kenduri' can be any big feast, wedding party, Doa Selamat, birthday party etc. Makan-Makan is literally Eat-Eat. But then, It's Good to see you having a good time in our country.

Malay chicken soup usually do not have herbs or ginseng those sort of things, but we do use spices like cinnamon sticks, clove and cardamom, plus ginger, garlic and shallots. Some people put lemon grass. Different people might have different recipe, but the things I mentioned are the basics. However for the sake of convenience you can find mixed spices (also known as sup bunjut) in supermarkets. Just boil them and add chicken and veges of your choices, and garnish with chopped parsley or green onion and fried onions.

I applaud your bravery to wear skirts and dresses to kenduri tbh i always wear the loosest thing i have just so i don’t feel like a soccer ball afterwards. Nowadays, kenduri are extravagant in terms of menu; they like to serve cendol, bubur pulut hitam, bubur jagung, apam balik- you know? Before, it’s usually just your good ‘ol rice chicken meat and veg.
Honestly, kenduri is the easiest way for you to catch up with friends and families (bc you invite everyone that you wanna meet and they would 100% try to come bc it’s an important business), introduce new family members (think new babies, newly married couples), and meet new ppl (ahem, potential life partner).
Thank you Mawaddah for inviting Blimey!

i hope blimey would extend the scopes of their contents to our Malaysian’s chinese, indians, sabahans, sarawakians, and others too. i believe a lot of your subscribers are non-malays too. it’s about time we malays embrace our country’s diversities and give much info needed so that blimey can work on that. can we imagine blimeys wearing saree or cheongsam? they’ve tried baju kurung. or blimey’s going to one of our chinese feast here? that would be a very beautiful vid. all the best blimey!

Thank you Blimey! Watching this video has made me reflect the true definition of Kenduri. Of course we normally congrats the person for let say, having a baby, get to perform pilgrimage in Mecca, or even a housewarming parties. It has become a part of our culture that I often forgot the goodness we get behind kenduri.

Somehow i forgot how wonderful, and exciting when you can taste many type of foods at kenduri. im living at village(kampung), basically almost very week in a month theres kenduri kahwin, plus at certain occasion, 2-3 houses in a week. once in a month there would be kenduri selamat, or tahlil at night. So it like a routine for me. Free food, but too much kenduri, make you lil'bit lazy to go, even at nearby house, but still need to come at least for ais cream or cendol, or kambing bakar, or roti canai, nasi ambeng at night... hehe

in malay culture, there are 2 type of sitting while on the ground. the sitting position that you showed is called "bersila" which is normally for men and should have never been shown by a girl/unmarried woman. normally for woman the sitting position is "bersimpuh" which is shown by that sister at 6.26

Open house (i.e. Hari Raya Aidilfitri/Aidiladha) is to a kenduri as a steady rain is to a thunderstorm or a steady river to a tsunami. Open house usually occur over a longer period of time than a kenduri, a day, a week or even a month whereas kenduri is usually half a day at most. Both involve 'makan-makan' as you already know but open house usually involve festive food (ketupat/kuih raya etc) whereas a kenduri can have anything. Nowadays people usually hire catering service for kenduri but these folks do more than just cater the food, they do a lot of things including bridal makeup and canopy/tent rent. Back in the old days circa 1990's kenduri is a community effort. The one who organize the kenduri provide the expense but everyone in the community (stronger bond of community the further away you are from big cities) get together to cook, cater, wash dish etc. The best kenduri experience IMO would be one in a rural area like a village/kampung, very hard to find nowadays. Best time for kenduri kahwin or wedding feast would be around school/public holidays. You'll get plenty of invites around that time. So much so that you have to plan your schedule properly.

the soup that yerim love usually for "soto" .
If u want to order from a restaurant you just need to say "can i have one soto".
Soto made from nasi empet/thin rice noodle and there's some accessories like soup leaves, green onion, chicken and others. Then we just put the soup🤤 Malaysian people love to eat soto when breakfast so u need to find a place that serves soto in the morning

I really love these exchange of cultural experiences. It's the main reason why I subscribe to Blimey and follow all their IGs (even though I'm not a Malaysian). The world will be a much better place if everyone keeps an open mind and experience different cultures together. I come from a multiracial and multireligious (muslim, hindu, christian relatives) family so I can somewhat relate to this.
And of course Jade, Dasol and Yerim are really entertaining and adorable to watch! Ahahah.
By the way, I never really realised how tall Dasol is until this video. Woah

4:09 that soup looked like it is the clear chicken soup with northern style with dried spices like star anise(bunga lawang), cinnamon (kulit kayu manis), cardamom (pelaga) and clove (bunga cengkih). Commonly known as "Sup Utara" (Northern Soup). So, if you want to order in future, then asked for Sup Utara - it could be chicken, beef or lamb, etc.
